NFL Draft/First Round: What's the order and what they need

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Note: The New England Patriots forfeited their own first-round pick (No. 31) in the 'Spygate' fallout. Also, neither indianapolis nor Cleveland has a first-round pick this year.

1. Miami Dolphins
Needs: Name a position. About the only spot they appear set is running back with Ronnie Brown, Lorenzo Booker and Ricky Williams.

2. St. Louis Rams
Needs: Both lines. This is the first draft for Billy Devaney, hired as head of player personnel after working for Falcons and 49ers.

3. Atlanta Falcons
Needs: QB tops a long list. There will be a lot of talk about BC's Matt Ryan, but Glenn Dorsey is the smart pick, particularly in a thin QB draft.

4. Oakland Raiders
Needs: Both lines and receiver. Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey would look good for a team that was busy in free agency here, but will they still be around?

5. Kansas City Chiefs
Needs: Just about everything. Must have at least three new starters on the OL, step-ins for two aging CBs and at least one safety.

6. New York Jets
Needs: Big receiver and a corner to complement Darelle Revis. But after busy free agency, likely feel they can afford to go with best available.

7. New England Patriots
Needs: What does a team that went 18-1 need? Well, CBs to replace Asante Samuel and Randall Gay. This is the 49ers pick in case you're wondering.

8. Baltimore Ravens
Needs: QB, particularly with the retirement of Steve McNair. A tackle to take over for aging Jonathan Ogden would be a close second.

9. Cincinnati Bengals
Needs: Help at defensive tackle, and linebacker (and in the court room). Receiver could also be an issue with Chad Johnson wanting out.

10. New Orleans Saints
Needs: Linebacker, defensive tackle and cornerback. Any help would make Drew Brees-led offense that much more pronounced.

11. Buffalo Bills
Needs: A big-bodied WR to complement Lee Evans and a CB to offset Nate Clements departure. With any help there, could be ready to step up from 7-9.

12. Denver Broncos
Needs: Help on both sides of the line as well as secondary and running back.

And in case you didn't notice, K Jason Elam left for Atlanta.

13. Carolina Panthers
Needs: An offensive tackle who can step right in and start this fall. This is a team that would love someone such as Pitt's Jeff Otah.

14. Chicago Bears
Needs: Help just about everywhere on offense, particularly the line and running back, where former No. 1 Cedric Benson is running out of time.

15. Detroit Lions
Needs: Have failed miserably in recent drafts. They need so many other things, so don't look for them to take another WR, but you never know.

16. Arizona Cardinals
Needs: A cornerback and backups at running back and receiver. That they're looking for backups says much about job of Ken Whisenhunt.

17. Minnesota Vikings
Needs: A pass-rushing defensive end is a priority, with Kenechi Udeze (leukemia) and Erasmus James (knee) uncertain for season.

18. Houston Texans
Needs: A left tackle with starter Ephraim Salaam entering his 11th season and Charles Spencer still out with an injury from 2006.

19. Philadelphia Eagles
Needs: Help in the secondary and along both lines. Believe it or not, they could be one playmaker on offense from making a run at the Super Bowl.

20. Tampa Bay Bucs
Needs: Most skill positions on offense and a cornerback. Outside of Joey Galloway, they are devoid of speed at receiver. Texas' Limas Sweed would fit nicely.

21. Washington Redskins
Needs: A pass-rushing end and a big receiver to fit into new coach Jim Zorn's West Coast offense. But Zorn may be the true rookie under the gun.

22.Dallas Cowboys
Needs: A running back to share the load with Marion Barber, a cornerback and young WRs. CB question could be answered by "Pac-man" Jones.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers
Needs: Offensive line, where they lost Alan Faneca to the Jets, and another wide receiver. This is a draft where they need to build depth all around.

24. Tennessee Titans
Needs: Bringing back Justin Gage and signing Justin McCareins means they have size, but still lack a speedy WR to stretch field.

25. Seattle Seahawks
Needs: A tight end who can block and catch passes and a running back for the future once one-time MVP Shaun Alexander hits the wall.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars
Needs:Defensive line help. Marcus Stroud is gone (for two second-day picks) and Paul Spicer and Rob Meier are over 30. So, yes, help on the DL.

27. San Diego Chargers
Needs:Offensive line and a backup RB now that Michael Turner has left for Atlanta. One problem: They have no picks in Rounds 2,3 or 4.

28. Dallas Cowboys
Needs: What they don't get at No. 22 overall, they can surely get here. WRs DeSeahn Jackson or Malcolm Kelly would look good opposite T.O.

29. San Fran. 49ers
Needs: A starting LB to go with Patrick Willis as well as depth at several spots. Would also have No. 7 pick, but traded it to Patriots.

30. Green Bay Packers
Needs: Tight end, cornerback and offensive line. General manager Ted Thompson, though, is known for taking "best available."

31. New York Giants
Needs: A safety, with loss of Gibril Wilson, and a CB, with Sam Madison nearing end of his career. Anywhere else on defense would be OK, too.

My head hurts from reading all of these draft forums.
