A 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death and another teen wounded on the South Side overnight in what police said may have been a mugging gone awry.

The incident occurred just before midnight Monday in the 7300 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said. The boy and an 18-year-old youth were "drinking on the street" when they accosted a 53-year-old man walking by.

"The [man] attempted to walk away but was grabbed and pulled back by the victims," police said in a statement. The man then stabbed the 15-year-old in the chest and the 18-year-old in the thigh.

The younger boy was taken to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was not being released pending the notification of family.

The 18-year-old was listed in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to the thigh, police said.

The weapon was recovered, and the man was taken into custody at the scene. Detectives were questioning him Tuesday, but no charges have been filed.

If they prosecute this old man, that will be a shame and a crime. Obviously he felt he needed protection.

And what the heck is a 15 yr old and 18 yr old doing drinking...anyone for homework?

Although they got what they deserved, it's a shame it had to be someone's death.

The lesson here is DON'T COMMIT A CRIME. Unfortunately someone died - but then again, that punk should not have tried to rob someone.

I hope the victim doesn't get charged - it was self defense.
