Why are some opposed to taking a RB?

The Duke
04-26-2008, 04:19 PM
I doesn't really matter. Whoever the Steelers pick in the 1st round this year will be akin to 2002's Kendall Simmons.

really? I would like to see the future too :coffee:

Preacher

i think we could really use young talent with a 1st round grade.

Yeah, but who...

and in a position that isn't redundant?

WizDom-N.KnowLedge
04-26-2008, 04:20 PM
The eagles made off like bandits.. the panthers gave up way too much. It makes Jax trade seem miniscule.

Cowboys already have a power runner in Barber. They need a lightning guy like Felix Jones. They could also go reciever or DB.

WizDom-N.KnowLedge

I can see the Cowboys taking him.

Mendenhall and Barber are similar players... if Dallas goes RB I'd say it would be Jones from Arkansas for more than the obvious reasons of name ( Jones) school (arkansas) but becasue of the skill set availble in Jones which is speed and shiftiness which would complement Barber moreso than Mendenhall would.

he is a beast. easily the best value in the entire draft. he could be the best RB, and we get him at 23! damn!

The only thing I can think.. is that we are seriously trying to go the Franco/Rocky route.

Franco & Rocky had an o-line anchored by a HOF center - this o-line is in major decline

This team is not in a position to draft what it may think is the best player on the board with needs on both lines

I don't know.

We have so many needs...

I like the kid.

But didn't we have more needs at DL, WR, etc.?

I just wonder.

How will we use them both?

Though I LOVE the idea of a 1 2 punch at RB.

All the 1st round talent on both lines are already gone. Would you have preferred a reach? There's also the possibility of the Steelers striking it rich in Undrafted FA's.

There's no worthy 1st round talent at WR. We go after the Lines next round.

Rashard Mendenhall RB 5'11 225 Illinois Jr. 4.45

By: Robert Davis

Mendenhall played sparingly as a freshman, racking up 214 yards on the ground, while adding 82 yards and two touchdowns on 13 receptions out of the backfield. As a junior, he became more of a factor in the offense, rushing for 640 yards and five touchdowns to go with 164 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions. All that was leading up to the massive season he had this year. Mendenhall ran for 1,681 yards and 17 TDs on the ground to go along with 34 receptions for 318 yards and two touchdowns.
As Mendenhall goes, Illinois goes. He was the catalyst for the offense that led the team to the Rose Bowl. He has very good size, and shows the ability to pound it between the tackles and pick up the tough yardage. He also has the quickness to make a defender miss, and the speed to turn the corner and make the big plays. Mendenhall has also become a threat as a receiver out of the backfield and a guy you have to keep an eye on.
Mendenhall does not have one true standout trait about his game. He has also only been the feature back for one season, although that may be spun as a positive because he lacks the wear and tear other backs may have on their body. Mendenhall had a huge season this year, establishing himself as a legit first rounder. He had a great season, capped off with a tremendous Rose Bowl. He then further legitimized his status with a quality showing at the combine. Mendenhall could be the second back selected in April, but is a first rounder nonetheless.

Not all DL talent was gone - Parker may be regarded as closer to the end of the road than A. Smith & Casey, which is the best spin I can put on this pick

However, RBs are fungible (see, e.g. FA Wilie Parker) - you build a foundation through the lines and QB - RB and WR are not usually a good value in the first round

As poor as the line is though, thinking about it more and more, with as of right now, the 4 backs we have, if they can pick up a tall talented receiver, Ben might not need to hold on to the ball as long, because he will have more outlets, and the defense might be worn down with the generous backfield we can throw at them now.

That's the thing with RBs; the wheels can fall off at any time. Nothing against Willie, but it seems like the instant he loses a half-step, he's done for. That could happen 5 years from now, or it could be this season.

I'm glad we're at least prepared. I saw enough of what an incompetent running game could do when Walter Abercrombie was our main guy. If Najeh and Moore had to carry the load for us, we might see that again.

If another team lets OL talent go for what the Steelers pay IMO that question has been answered

That Starks is even being talked about as a long term answer at LT while Colon playing center is being discussed says all you need to know about how screwed up the OL is with the 2007 line-up of "talent."

Steelers had a lot of OL talent go from picks 10 through 20, but I will think about this pick a lot (and not favorably) if the run defense plays like it did after Thanksgiving ans Ben gets sacked repeat5edly once again

Steelers realize they are TOO dependant on the pass. They pick up Mendenhall so that they can have the same thing they thought they had when they had both Bettis and the Sweatsuit model.

What an awesome pick. I thought the Steelers were getting to far away from Steelers football and now I have some relief because they now have a power back for the end of the third and the fourth quarter when they have a lead.

Plus last year when they went against teams that were week against the run up the middle, they still came out passing the ball. Now with a back that can get 3 or 4 yards on first down. The key is he probably wont lose you 3 or 4 yards either.. Now they can at times just run up the middle. To many times last year Willie would lose yards or not gain any yards. Don't get me wrong I love Willie but we needed a power back to complement his style of running. Great Pick!

That is what he just said. I am not him. Apparently there are a few left on their board.

Certainly not taking a shot at you

I just find Colbert claiming remaining OTs may be around 32 picks later to be pure spin

Went back to read the P-G article on RB picks earlier this week

Oregon's Jonathan Stewart, a 5-10, 235-pound bull of a runner, or Illinois' Rashard Mendenhall, 10 pounds lighter but with 4.41 speed, would look great alternating with Willie Parker in the backfield next season. But those two project higher than the Steelers' spot at No. 23 and it appears, the value at running back when it comes their turn in the first round won't hold

Somewhere, a running back could be in the Steelers' draft this weekend, but there's more of a chance that will happen in the third or fourth rounds; the draft is deep in good backs and it's not as if the Steelers are desperate for one.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08114/875607-66.stm

So Mendenhall apparently is value for the position at #23, but does not fill an immediate need - I had thought this was an "immediate need" draft on both sides of the line and for that reason am not excited about this pick

Maybe we should trade up for either DE or WR. We really need to get value out of these next few picks so we should give up whatever it takes. Looks like we could get value in the middle of the 2nd round with these 2 positions (Merling, Campbell, Groves, Sweed, Hardy).
