The AFC North is one of the toughest divisions in football, and its talent pool became deeper this weekend with the influx of drafted players such as Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&id=11737) (No. 8), Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&id=12172) and new Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&id=11486) (No. 18).

Here is a breakdown of this weekend's draft within the AFC North:

Rashard Mendenhall gives the Steelers a legitimate weapon behind starting RB Willie Parker.

Best move

T he best move was actually two moves made by the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=pit). General manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin ignored the team's most glaring need -- offensive line -- on Day 1 and opted to go with the best available players. Those two players were Illinois' Mendenhall at No. 23 and Texas receiver Limas Sweed (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2008&id=11774) at No. 53. Both players graded out as first-round talents in most projections, meaning Pittsburgh got tremendous value for its picks.

The Steelers didn't necessarily need a tailback or a receiver. But pairing Mendenhall with Willie Parker (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7073) and adding Sweed to the receiving duo of Hines Ward (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4323) and Santonio Holmes (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7774) will make defensive coordinators around the league cringe this season

:tt02: I really think that the Steelers with this draft and being Tomlins 2nd season coaching and the experience he gained last season all points towards the Steelers winning this division in '08

I believe the Steelers can win the AFCN this season but I'm still going to wait before I predict a sure-fire AFCN crown until after TC and preseason. :tt02:

Everyone was talking about how great the Browns made themselves in FA until they realized that they sacrificed way too much in draft picks to get that.

So now everyone realized that, as usual, the Browns suck.

cincy will blow again w/ only having one wr to throw to.. and the off wonn't be able to put up points or even keep up anymore..

the ravens will have a hard yr with the qb situation.. this is the yr u didn't want a qb situation w/ the sch they have... i poss see all 3 can start this yr

the browns gave up too much 4 FA's.. and only having 1 rb will hurt them... but they will keep it closs w/ the passing game

If going on pure homerism, I'd have to say no, but realistically until we see where all of the pieces are going to fit into the Steelers' puzzle this season, I think it is a tad presumptuous to assume that the AFCN is going to be won by the Steelers or any other team at this point in time.

I think the Steelers competition this year will be the Felons...just because they have the last place schedule...look at the Clowns schedule, it is hard and I only see 6 wins in it for them. The Bungles will muddle in mediocrity yet again..

so I have

Steelers
Felons
Bungles
Clowns

My AFC North Finish looks lie this:

Steelers (Every single Year until someone proves we aren't the 18 time winner and don't completely own the Division)

The Rest of them in whatever order those ridiculous slackers finish in.

I will always put the Steelers on top of the division.

The Brown's are.....well, just the Brown's.

The Ratbirds are basically starting from scratch.

The Bungles never fail to commit murder /suicide by mid season.

And that leaves the Steelers..........nuff said.

I personally think we finish second. I'm only being realisitic. Our O-line is questionable still. I say browns or bengals finish first.

if we learned anything from this years super bowl.
defense wins championships

however stacked the browns seem to be getting. i have learned to maintain faith in the blitzburgh-D. it would be nice if we added a strong pass-rushing defensive end to our starting roster, because last years defense just didnt produce.

(even though the steel curtain did have the number 1 ranked defense last season, woot!)
how did we lose to the jets and the cardinals last year? that is beyond me.

Untill they can stand up and take the north from us we will be on top.

If you think the Bengals will finish first in the AFCN, you're being anything but realistic. That team is in shambles and will be lucky to win more than 5 games. The Browns don't overly impress me either - they gave up their best CB (a position they were paper-thin at to begin with) in a trade for one DL with "motivation" issues and mortgaged most of their draft for the others. Bad move, IMO. But don't take my word for it - just ask Dan Snyder how well building a team with overpriced FAs works.

I think the bengals have to many internal problems that will linger through the season and cause them to self destruct. I see them finishing last in the division
