View Full Version : My Ideas on the 08 Final Roster

TrueSteelerForLife

Quarterbacks (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon

Running Backs (5): Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Gary Russel, Mewelde Moore, Carey Davis

Wide Receivers (5): Himes Ward, Santonio Holmes, Limas Sweed, Nate Washington, Dallas Baker

Tight Ends (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Jonathan Dekker

Offensive Line (9): Marvel Smith, Chris Kemoeatu, Justin Hartwig, Kendall Simmons, Max Starks, Willie Colon, Darnell Stapleton, Tony Hills, Sean Mahan

Defensive Line (7): Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Kyle Clement, Ryan McBeam, Travis Kirschke

Linebackers (9): James Farrior, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley, Larry Foote, Lawrence Timmons, Keyaron Fox, Mike Humpal, Bruce Davis, Arnold Harrison

Cornerbacks (5): Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend, Bryan McFadden, William Gay, Anthony Madison

Strong Safety (2): Troy Polamalu, Ryan Mundy

Free Safety (2): Ryan Clark, Anthony Smith

Specialists (3): Greg Warren, Daniel Sepulveda, Jeff Reid

I believe Kyle Clement (undrafted free agent) will beat out either Eason of Kirschke for a roster spot, also look for McBeam to end up on the PUP list depending on how he recovers from his foot injury. I’ll be honest, I don’t really know much about the Clement kid but his workout numbers were good and from what I read online he is quite the run stuffer. (Kyle Clement, DL 6’4, 316 pounds, Arm-32.2"Hand-10.0" 40 time-5.01, Vertical-29.5" Short Shuttle: 4.54, 3-Cone-7.54, Broad Jump-8'10.5" Bench-37 reps).

Also look for Dallas Baker to beat out Willie Reid for the last receiver spot. Baker worked hard in the off-season and apparently has fallen in favor with Roethlisberger.

Tell me what ya’ll think…

I think Krieder makes the team......
And we fit in another CB somehow
also, I think that Mundy will get in there on special teams.

Pretty good break down.

I saw Baker could make the team, and that Reid definitely won't. Reid is out a job, we brought in Moore to return kicks and drafted a WR in the 2nd. Reid is no obsolete. Baker could be the 5th receiver if he has done well in the off season.

Welcome to the forum :drink:

Quarterbacks (3): Ben Roethlisberger, Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon
Spot on

Running Backs (5): Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, Gary Russel, Mewelde Moore, Carey Davis
Sounds right. Unless somehow Kreider makes a comeback and displaces Davis. . I won't hold my breath too long though.

Wide Receivers (5): Himes Ward, Santonio Holmes, Limas Sweed, Nate Washington, Dallas Baker
I agree with these five, but I think there will be a sixth as well. . . look for the winner between Willie Reid and Jeremy Bloom to fill that sixth, unless of course we pick someone up after June 1st

Tight Ends (3): Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Jonathan Dekker
Probably about right, but I'm looking for Cody Boyd to beat out Dekker. We'll see. With two young high-caliber players like Miller and Spaeth, I don't rule out bringing in a veteran to be the third TE either.

Offensive Line (9): Marvel Smith, Chris Kemoeatu, Justin Hartwig, Kendall Simmons, Max Starks, Willie Colon, Darnell Stapleton, Tony Hills, Sean Mahan
Here's our only big disagreement. I think if Hartwig is the clear choice for starting at Center we may see Mahan be cut loose after June 1st (especially since Kemoeatu is now being heralded as the new left guard, and Colon will get looks there too). Also, I would have 10 OL instead of 9. . . Remove Mahan. Add Capizzi and Trai Essex (surprised you don't have Essex making the team).

Defensive Line (7): Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Kyle Clement, Ryan McBean, Travis Kirschke
I think when talking in terms of the base 3-4 defense, we're only going to have 6 DL-men. I agree with everyone else but Kyle Clement -- if he makes the team, it'll either be because McBean hit the IR, or at the expense of McBean or Kirschke's roster spot. I would go with everyone else you've listed, minus Clement at this point. On the off chance that McFarland is brought in, I think say goodbye to Kirschke too.

Linebackers (9): James Farrior, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley, Larry Foote, Lawrence Timmons, Keyaron Fox, Mike Humpal, Bruce Davis, Arnold Harrison
I also think this is one too many linebackers. I don't necessarily disagree with anyone here on your list, but am curious that Frazier was left off of it. (But then you'd have 10, and if 9 was too many. . ) There's too much going on here to give a definitive list but I think Frazier is probably safe right now as a backup at OLB (and he can play DE in the 4-3 in an emergency). More likely you have 8 LBs - Woodley, Farrior, Timmons, J.Harrison, Davis, Frazier. That's six. Then you have Fox, Humpal, Foote and A.Harrison all competing for two backup roster spots on the inside. Foote and Fox seem like the obvious keepers but Foote makes a lot for a starter let alone a backup so that could be his end, and Humpal will get his chances.

Cornerbacks (5): Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend, Bryan McFadden, William Gay, Anthony Madison
Spot on, lets hope McFadden steps it up and Madison turns into something good.

Strong Safety (2): Troy Polamalu, Ryan Mundy
Free Safety (2): Ryan Clark, Anthony Smith
I'm with you here. Really hoping Mundy displaces Carter/Lorello/Etc. He has all the intangibles you could ask for, played well, but injuries and changing schools murdered his draft stock. If he pans out toward his potential, major major steal. I think if Clark is healthy and back, he's the starting FS like you said, and our defense is better for it. It might not happen this year since Smith and Clark are technically in competition for that spot, but Smith is more of a SS, and Mundy is a Free Safety, so I'd like them to remain as reserves but have their listed positions reversed. But that's just a nit-pick and they can still play other positions.

Specialists (3): Greg Warren, Daniel Sepulveda, Jeff Reid
Pretty much. I'd like to see Jeff Reed replaced, but to replace him you need someone. . better. Clutch on mid-range FGs but that's about it, his kicking strength has magically improved but it still isn't great. .

Dookie and Reid -- toast. I think everyone's happy about that.

I wonder if they'll keep a fifth guy who's capable of playing safety just in case Clark doesn't make it for the whole season.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the new LBs ends up on the practice squad, because 9 is just a lot of guys. It also wouldn't shock me to see Hills go to the practice squad or IR so we can keep Essex. Maybe the same for one of the D-linemen, especially if we're still thinking of signing McFarland.

05-16-2008, 02:51 PM
Yea hopefully Dookie is gone along with fumbleitis Reid.

I still believe Smith is gonna beat out Clark. Hes still young but if he plays to his potiental, him and Troy are going to be like a wildfire safety tandem.

This year is shaping up better than the 05' season.

TrueSteelerForLife
05-16-2008, 07:36 PM
Okay, i see what ya'll are saying, but keep in mind that when you place a player on the practice squad other teams have the opportunity to sign them. That's why i had Hills beating out Essex for a roster spot, unless of course Hills ends up on IR or PUP. Another thing to keep in mind is we had nine linebackers on our active roster last year, so i imagine that can happen again. Good to hear everyone's imput.

I think Bloom makes it as a KR. I also think Doug Legursky makes the team also. I read in the Huntington WV paper that the team had him long snappin as well during the minicamp. Just seems they really like him as a player. And looking at it what if they feel Dixon isnt ready to compete this year and they place him on the IR. Then who becomes #3 QB. Mike Potts or Jared Zambransky?? For some reason I think we end up signing a few guys after cut downs in September.

** - Potentially same thing with Carey Davis, praying for Kreider to be healthy and come back
*** - Assuming Hills doesn't go IR which I think would be a mistake. Let him backup at Guard and learn this year, slide him left to T in '09, should be ready
**** - I know it'll probably be Smith at LT and Starks at RT. I'm just interested in getting some looks in the preseason and camp.
***** - Unlikely but I"m still hoping for McFarland. . if he comes, Kirschke's gone, McFarland takes over Hoke's spots, while Hoke slides out to take over Kirschke's. Hoke would be fine at end but we don't have that luxury right now. . .

I guess I'm the Lone Wolf in believing Najah Davenport is a solid piece to our steadily-developing program here. Has Gary Russel shown flashes? Yes. But I watched Davenport in-person when Pittsburgh came down and faced our local Carolina Panthers - and the guy flat out plays.

Looking at the overall lack of talent on the o-line and lack of depth on the d-line turns my stomach. I wouldn't give up on Reid just yet. Looking at the WR's he's probably the only one outside of Hines that would be effective in the slot.

What's the story with the UDFA TE Dezmond Sherrod? His profile says that he is a blocking TE. At 6'2" 250lbs. this guy is puny compared to the giants we have at TE.

Does anyone think he could be compitition for Davis at the FB/H-back position? Don't know much about him.

My ideas;

Dixon and Hills should start the year on PUP/IR. We can use all the roster spots we can get. This move gives the team 6 more weeks to evaluate some of the young talent or keep a vet early on.

Keep Gary Russell on the roster. I know that means keeping 5 RBs, but the kid is developing into a pro. Russells equally talented to a couple of pretty good pro backs in Barber and Maroney. He also excelled on STs when given the oppurtunity.

Camp competition to watch;

FB - Davis, Davenport and Sherrod. This shouldn't be much of a battle, with Davis remaining the starter. I look for Dookie to be cut and Sherrod to go to the PS.

WR - Baker, Reid, Bloom, Trannon and Rucker. With the addition of MeMo, I hope we don't keep Reid or Bloom just to return. I'm looking for Baker as the 5th WR with Rucker going to the PS.

TE - Dekker and Boyd. I think whoever impresses the most blocking gets the nod.

OL - Starks and Colon. Who gets the RT job? I would still like to see Colon at RG and Starks at RT.
-Essex, Hills, Capizzi, Lentz and Parquet. Who gets the backup job? This is an extremely interesting competition IMO. Do they keep two guys? This will be one of the biggest decisions for Tomlin, and the future of the line IMO.
-Simmons, Kemo, Hartwig, Mahan, Stapleton and Legursky. Not exactly a competition here. I'd like to see some true competition but most likely Legursky will go to the PS, Stapleton will be a backup, Hartwig will start at center and Simmons at RG.
-Some tough decisions need to be made on the O-line for the future.

DL - Only the three starters and Hoke should be set. The rest should be up for competition. McBean hasn't proven anything, while Eason might be the lesser of two evils. I know everyone hopes we find a diamond or two out of the UDFAs.

LB - Foote and Timmons. The most discussed camp competition. Unless some of the young guys really shine, Foote remains the starter. Timmons would be better suited in Farriors role. He'll see alot of playing time, but Foote starts IMO.
-Fox, Davis, Harrison, Frazier, Humpal, Bailey, Trucks and Woods. This is another tough decision for Tomlin IMO. How many LBs do you keep? 8 or 9? Do you go with youth, are you looking at STs or depth? The decision would be made alot easier if someone really stepped up. I'm rooting for Humpal and Davis to make impacts, at the very least on STs.

DB - Clark and Smith. If Clark is healthy this isn't much of a battle. Hopefully Mundy gets involved quickly in this competition. I'd like to see Smith move to SS if Mundy pans out at FS.
-Townsend, McFadden and Gay. Here's another area we need true competition, and I think we'll get it. Townsend does what he does, I want to see the other two excel.
-Madison, Mason, Williams and Lewis. Somebody needs to take the bull by the horns. Williams probably goes to the PS. It's time for Mason to step up.
-Carter, Lorello and Mundy. I'm rooting for Mundy to get a spot, which I think he can. That would allow Smith to use his aggression at SS. Carter's time is done IMO.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. Warren does a great job, but why can't we get one of the back-ups to do it. That would free up a spot like you said. I know Legursky long snaps, but I'm not sure he gets on the roster this season.

This is the most frightening prospect for me. I hape no suggestions because there are so many question marks!

Defensive Line (7): Casey Hampton, Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Kyle Clement, Ryan McBeam, Travis Kirschke

Is Smith 100%? This line has a lot of experience, if not a lot of talent.

Linebackers (9): James Farrior, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley, Larry Foote, Lawrence Timmons, Keyaron Fox, Mike Humpal, Bruce Davis, Arnold Harrison

I love the LB's. Arnold is solid on ST's , where I think Humpal will be for years.

Cornerbacks (5): Ike Taylor, Deshea Townsend, Bryan McFadden, William Gay, Anthony Madison

This looks right even if I hate the talent here. I still say the starters would sit for at least 25 other NFL teams.
