I posted a couple weeks ago that the Big Ten network was re-airing the Nov. 10 2007 game where Illinois upset OSU. Well here is what I gleaned from watching.

It is hard to say how Mendenhall will play at the pro level by watching that game. They had a QB that ran the ball more then he threw it (although he did toss 4 TDs) so that in turn brings the D up to stop that threat. Which in turn makes for tougher rushing yards. They also ran out of the spread O and in the shotgun(about 98% of the snaps) and never really tried to block the OSU D, more like just spread them out and find the empty space to run. In the Illinois O Mendenhall was a 3 down player and looked good as a blocker and was often split out as a WR(ala Marshall Faulk). When he did run, he ran with balance and power and is not a guy you can bring down with an arm tackle. All in all he seems to be a well rounded player and should be a positive addition to the black and gold.

One thing of interest was the game prior to the OSU game; they played Minnesota and Mendenhall was just 17 yards shy of setting the school record when he took himself out of the game in order to let his older brother play. Even though it was for his brother, he showed that he doesn't have that "me" attitude and is a team player.

He IS a bigger back, but I don't think he is going to make anybody forget the BUS. We were definately spoiled in that regard.

As of now he looks like a good pick but there is a lot of football to be played before he establishes himself as a "great" pick. Just trying to stay grounded and not get caught up in the "hope" that he will be great.

GO BURGH!

DETROIT DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT THEY'RE UP AGAINST! GOOOO PENS!!!!!!

There is no one, at any level that can be compaired fairly to The Bus. He was a freak of nature, for a man his size to have his quickness and awareness, it was a talent born into him. The Bus will be one of the last HOF big backs for quite some time. And I don't mean, Pumped up Deisal Big, I'm talking his "belly done lapped" over his belt BIG. That man was a freak.

Now, Mendenhall, he's a stud and I look forward to seeing him pound the ball for years to come.

Yes, agreed.... the bus was truely a one of a kind. Footwork for a man that size, and build is something I never seen before, and truth be know, probably will never see it again.

However I do like a back that weighs allmost 250, and can run a 4.7. imagine a 175lbs db try to take that man on running full speed. If I was him I wouldnt even try to juke, just plow over right over him. Like the bus, they better hope they stop him before he gets into the secondary.

I know that he will never be the bus but I think this kid has talent and will be the next thing to the bus.

i think the usc game should be more looked at because usc has a more nfl-like defense. and in that game he really shined. he was the only guy on their offense to do anything in that game

Oh yes! The Bus was an animal on the field, lol. I certainly saw the beast in Bettis, in all of about 12 games of his career. Bettis has been long forgotten, little Willie Parker had us forget Bettis.

I guess "short bus" wouldn't be appropriate?

I like his Jersey Choice, 34, that's a "powerful" Running Back Number. Almost as grand a number as 32 for a Running back.

Can't Effing Wait for the Season to start. I'm hurting for some hitting!

How about Earl Campbell ?? Didn't have the "belly" to which you refer, but weren't their sizes similar ??

....okay, upon further review, The Bus had about twenty pounds on Campbell.

Campbell was still a beast. His only downfall is he played during the time when the Steelers dominated the league.

Campbell was an athlete and compares more to a bigger Ricky Williams.

The Bus was at his most lean in college and the first couple seasons as a pro....still a bit pudgy and defys laws of physics that a fat guy can be that quick. Mendenhall is somewhere between the ability of Fred Taylor and L. Tomlinson. Now he has to prove he can do it in the NFL.
