I see the term "troll" used a lot on SF. Just wondering what everybody considers a "troll" to be in their opinion? What is a trolls purpose? Is there such a thing as a "good" troll? Just curious. :noidea:

Troll:

One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.

I think that might be a reasonable definition.

But does that mean that a "troll" posts that type of message exclusively, or just mainly ??

I come here to trade jabs and patter with you folks, all the while knowing we are not going to agree much. However, I am more than willing to discuss football, or a few other things, calmly and intelligently without barbs (and have demonstrated as much) in the proper forum if not provoked.

Some folks label anyone who does not remain at the site on a consistent basis as a troll.

For others, it takes no more than to not be a Steelers fan !!

I don't really care if you label me, or what you label me. I come here, for the most part, to fly my colors in your front yard, banter reasonably when you let me, and smack back at you when you don't !!

Have a nice holiday weekend !!

What Is A Troll?
The term derives from "trolling", a style of fishing which involves trailing bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The troll posts a message, often in response to an honest question, that is intended to upset, disrupt or simply insult the group.

Usually, it will fail, as the troll rarely bothers to match the tone or style of the group, and usually its ignorance shows.

Why do trolls do it?
I believe that most trolls are sad people, living their lonely lives vicariously through those they see as strong and successful.

Disrupting a stable newsgroup gives the illusion of power, just as for a few, stalking a strong person allows them to think they are strong, too.

For trolls, any response is 'recognition'; they are unable to distinguish between irritation and admiration; their ego grows directly in proportion to the response, regardless of the form or content of that response.

Trolls, rather surprisingly, dispute this, claiming that it's a game or joke; this merely confirms the diagnosis; how sad do you have to be to find such mind-numbingly trivial timewasting to be funny?

Remember that trolls are cowards; they'll usually post just enough to get an argument going, then sit back and count the responses (Yes, that's what they do!).

How can troll posts be recognised?
No Imagination - Most are frighteningly obvious; sexist comments on nurses' groups, blasphemy on religious groups .. I kid you not.

Pedantic in the Extreme - Many trolls' preparation is so thorough, that while they waste time, they appear so ludicrous from the start that they elicit sympathetic mail - the danger is that once the group takes sides, the damage is done.

False Identity - Because they are cowards, trolls virtually never write over their own name, and often reveal their trolliness (and lack of imagination) in the chosen ID. As so many folk these days use false ID, this is not a strong indicator on its own!

Crossposting - Any post that is crossposted to several groups should be viewed as suspicious, particularly if unrelated or of opposing perspective. Why would someone do that?

Off-topic posting - Often genuine errors, but, if from an 'outsider' they deserve matter-of-fact response; if genuine, a brief apposite response is simply netiquette; if it's a troll post, you have denied it its reward.

Repetition of a question or statement is either a troll - or a pedant; either way, treatment as a troll is effective.

Missing The Point - Trolls rarely answer a direct question - they cannot, if asked to justify their twaddle - so they develop a fine line in missing the point.

Thick or Sad - Trolls are usually sad, lonely folk, with few social skills; they rarely make what most people would consider intelligent conversation. However, they frequently have an obsession with their IQ and feel the need to tell everyone. This is so frequent, that it is diagnostic! Somewhere on the web there must be an Intelligence Test for Trolls - rigged to always say "above 150"

Who is at risk?
Any newsgroup, bulletin board, forum or chatroom can attract trolls, but they don't have the brains to attack nuclear physicists, and they are drawn to the quick response where sex, religion and race are found; so politics is easy prey.

One troll famously tried to infiltrate a mensa group; the results read like 100 trolls and one regular, it didn't have a chance - but it was stupid enough to persist until removed.

When Should You Be Concerned?
Usually, no, though fractured funny bones and occasional waves of nausea have been reported.

When a troll become persistent and personal, you may need to consider the possibility that it has fermented into an Internet Stalker - equally pathetic, if not more so - but sometimes requiring weedkiller. Find Out More

Trolls - if they had brains, they just might be dangerous

You make some interesting and accurate points, but much of what you mention is self serving and arrogant.

for example.....

I believe that most trolls are sad people, living their lonely lives vicariously through those they see as strong and successful.

Disrupting a stable newsgroup gives the illusion of power, just as for a few, stalking a strong person allows them to think they are strong, too.

Don't many fans, such as Steelers fans for instance, somehow associate their team's success with some sort of fan superiority and strength ??

I find that to be the case quite often, not always of course, but often.

UKCB, you are not a troll. You get your fun from the give AND take, not from just the give.

The difference between a troll and a rival is that a rival will act the same way in real life; UKCB, if we were to meet at a game, we would jab and jibe, but we would eat and drink together as well. "Trolling" takes advantage of the nature of internet message boards to create something more; trolling's intent is to disrupt the board, not to argue with other fans. Trolling is more like mailing someone a dead mouse.

It would appear that there are many varied descriptions of what constitutes a "troll".

I view a troll as someone who isn't here to rationally discuss football, but instead, to harass, annoy, badger and demean others hiding behind the protection of the computer screen. I've had some really good football discussions around here with fans of other teams. Most of those who I have viewed as "trolls" around these parts wouldn't know a football if it hit them in the side of the head because they are obviously here for reasons other than discussing football. What lonely, pathetic turds. :shake02:

Yeah...believe it or not! We talked about alot of things other than the gardens and stuff. (Ocassionally, even football!) We had the ability to post pictures and midis. It was a great place to unwind and we had alot of laughs. A nasty, nasty troll ended all that. He was posting porn pictures, obnoxious music and being an allround pain in the ass. It was a forum for a well known gardening magazine. Trolls also have the uncanny knack to get people fighting amongst themselves and then they sit back and enjoy the show. An internet troll is a person who comes to a community in the internet with the sole intent to cause disrupt the community in various ways. Be it starting fighting between the community, posting photos that cause threads that otherwise would be kept open to become closed, and even up to hacking the site into shutdown.

A lot of times, at least on sports message boards, the troll is or at least poses as a fan of a rival team. Sometimes the troll posts as a fan of the team that the MB represents.

We had a troll who shall remain namless. He started off harmless and gained a good amount of respect and even became a moderator. A lot of people were suspicious of him and didn't like the fact that he became a mod partly because he was a fan of another team. He began to abuse his moderator powers and ignore the rules of the site. He ended up stripped of his moderator privlidges and then banned. He cause a few good posters to leave or become banned.

Its a great question. Some people often confuse trolls, goblins, orcs and ogres. Depending on the area of the folklore, trolls can be big or small. Sometimes, they are confused with goblins, because of their green pigment, also, the big trolls are confused with orcs because of their size. Then you get into the differences of opinion of authors of stories about trolls and that just opens a pandora's box about the entire issue of fantasy and....oh wait...this was about message board trolls, not real trolls...

my mistake. Let me know when we get into the discussion about the differences between a Tolkien troll, a Rowlings Troll and a Billy Goat's Gruff troll.

Hi,

For those of you who dont know me I am Dr. Spencer Wells.

Recently I have joined the Technical Roundtable Of Licensed Learners...or T.R.O.L.L. for short...It is our desire to try and capture, examine, tag, and release internet trolls back into the wild.

Let me share with you some of the remarkable things we have learned in our endeavors to study and catergorize these amazing creatures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MAJOR BREEDS

The Vulgar Troll. These, the crudest of all trolls, make no attempt to hide their species. Often, they make racist comments, or they may post porn and other spam. Vulgars usually confine their comments merely to primitive, profane, off-topic observations. When you log into the Really Profound Serious Philosophical Discussions board and see the post, "I smell my farts," you've spotted the Vulgar Troll. Other species of troll sometimes revert to this form when cornered.

The Deceptive or "Classic" Troll. More sophisticated but often easily identified and exposed, the Classic Troll gratifies his ego by pretending to be someone or something he or she is not. Classics make up elaborate stories about themselves, sometimes weaving some amounts of truth into their lies. As a web of lies is difficult to build with consistency, however, Classics are often "outed" by other forumites. When this happens, Classic Trolls have a bag of tricks to which they turn:

The Contrarian Troll. A sophisticated breed, Contrarian Trolls frequent boards whose predominant opinions are contrary to their own. A forum dominated by those who support firearms and knife rights, for example, will invariably be visited by Contrarian Trolls espousing their beliefs in the benefits of gun control. It is important to distinguish between dissenters and actual Contrarian Trolls, however; the Contrarian is not categorized as a troll because of his or her dissenting opinions, but due to the manner in which he or she behaves:

The YerATroll. YerATrolls are those whining forumites who devote a tremendous amount of time and energy complaining about the tremendous amount of time an energy expended by Troll Bashers and Angry Forumites on the practice of troll-hunting. A self-righteous and hypocritical breed, YerATrolls spend all their time pointing fingers at everyone but trolls, petulantly demanding that their opinions be granted the significance the YerATroll believes they deserve. YerATrolls often start threads excoriating others for troll-hunting, all the while completely oblivious to the fact that they're engaging in trolling by picking fights with everyone else. One of the most ill-tempered of troll species, YerATrolls are characterized by a childish need for attention disguised as cynical nobility and pretensions of being "above it all."

The Agenda Troll. Agenda trolls are those participants who join a forum specifically to pursue an agenda of their own often a feud or grudge with another member, or perhaps a dispute with some party not participating in that forum. When a flame war erupts on another board, for example, Agenda Trolls will follow their opponents to other forums in order to continue the spat.

The Sophist Troll. Sophist Trolls, or "philotrolls," fancy themselves Enlightened Philosophers or Learned Experts of the highest order. Often well educated, Philotrolls are capable of speaking intelligently on a number of topics, and when the spirit moves them they can be worthwhile forum participants. Unfortunately, Sophist Trolls are an extremely hostile and intolerant species.

When confronted by opinions with which they do not agree particularly when they do not see any means of successfully arguing their contrary views Sophists resort (repeatedly) to a variety of intellectually dishonest tactics. Most often, this is characterized by an overly snide, condescending, patronizing attitude. Philotrolls consider anyone with whom they do not agree to be "immature," and are fond of quoting that old saw that "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

When cornered they are quick to resort to personal attacks. A philotroll's bag of rhetorical tricks includes a variety of transparent ploys, such as willfully misinterpreting the opponent's words, committing Straw Man fallacies, accusing his or her opponents of engaging in the very tactics used by the philotroll, and so forth.

When engaging in their sophistry, philotrolls are among the most hypocritical and aggravating of trollkind.

The Affected Profundity Troll. A mutant subspecies of Sophist Trolls, Affected Profundity Trolls post endless pages of pretentious drivel that is intended to appear wise, but which generally makes little sense (if any). Affected Profundity Trolls enjoy asking themselves questions, sometimes answering them and sometimes leaving them hanging, for they believe this looks intelligent and lends an aura of mystery to their incoherent ramblings. Affected Profundity Trolls aspire to become Sophist Trolls, but lack the intelligence necessary to make the leap.

The Don King Troll. Related to Affected Profundity Trolls, Don King Trolls spout gibberish in the hope that they'll either bore or confuse to death those with whom they disagree. The average Don King Troll is "a pursuitist who gromulates his adversarial computerists with height defining formulations to the disinterestingest adjunct."

The Artistic Troll. A higher species of Classic Troll, Artistic Trolls are intelligent individuals who understand the subtle art of trolling, and who do what they do specifically to make others look foolish. Often employing the techniques of Deceptive Trolls, Artistics will string forumites along until some point in time designated by their own desires, at which point they will reveal the ploy, admit that it was a ploy, and laugh at everyone for being stupid enough to fall for it. Artistic Trolls delight in sowing discord, but do it in a highly developed and fully aware manner. They do not care if they are despised, and do not seek the approval of forum participants. Chaos is their only goal, and preferably chaos with a humorous bent to it. Without a doubt, this is the most dangerous species.

The Bitter Troll. Bitter Trolls are a curious cross-species. They can be trolls of any breed in their larval stages, but become Bitters after their previous activities are seen for what they were. What sets these trolls apart from other classifications is their behavior after they have been spotted and labeled as trolls. Angry, frustrated, and resentful about being "outed," the Bitter Troll will wage a campaign of indignant complaints intended to focus attention away from the troll and on whomever is responsible for identifying the creature. Often, a troll mutates into a Bitter just prior to becoming a Vulgar.

The Mutt. Alternatively known as Dogs or Yapping Dogs. Mutts are pack animals characterized by their loud barking vociferous, repetitive, usually ignorant and irrational criticism of anything and anyone they do not like. Mutts frequently become obsessed with a few or even a single poster with whom they disagree, often for purely personal reasons. Like a dog gnawing at a bone, the Mutt will attack the object of its ire over and over again, making a fool of itself in the eyes of those who understand such childish behavior for what it is. Often one Mutt in a group of Yapping Dogs will act as the alpha of the pack, while the others chime in to voice their mindless (but loud) support for their leader's opinions.

They're useless slugs, (body & soul)
Whose posts the Mods must constantly patrol.

With the substance of a day old roll
Petty turmoil is their toll.

To flame and mock is their sole goal
(I wish they'd practice birth control)
I wish we could ban them as a whole
But to point them out..is my pleasured goal.

With the substance of a day old roll
Petty turmoil is their toll.

To flame and mock is their sole goal
(I wish they'd practice birth control)
I wish we could ban them as a whole
But to point them out..is my pleasured goal.

WHEW!!!! I'm out of rhymes!!!:laughing::laughing:
