Competition is expected to heat up when the Steelers head to training camp this summer and linebacker is one position where it will be interesting.

Second-year linebacker LaMarr Woodley is aiming to take over at outside linebacker where the left side was vacated by the departure of Clark Haggans via free agency. And last year’s first-round pick Lawrence Timmons also will be in the mix, battling for playing time inside.

“I feel more prepared this year,” said Timmons. “I am getting a lot of reps this year. I am more relaxed. There isn’t as much pressure. I feel a lot better.”

Veteran James Farrior can see the improvement in the two young linebackers during the team’s OTA’s and likes the progress they are making.

“You can tell they aren’t rookies any more,” said Farrior. “We have guys looking up to them now. I am looking forward to good things from both of them.”

He is also looking forward to the competition for playing time as he feels it will make the linebackers a better unit overall.

“It’s going to be exciting to see which guys really want the position and step up and make a contribution,” said Farrior. “We are going to go with the guys who are making plays. It’s wide open right now. It keeps you on your toes. I think that will work for the good of the whole group.”

Farrior has been a regular at the OTA’s, but thinks that they are much more beneficial for the younger players.

“They didn’t invent this stuff for the old veteran guys,” said Farrior, who is entering his 12th season. “We’ve been here and been through it all. We know what we have to do. We are out there to help the young guys along and give them a better understanding of the defense.

“That’s what they made it for, the younger guys who don’t have the full grasp of what they are doing. For them to come out here and practice it over and over again it’s going to help out the whole defense in the long run.”

I hope Timmons gets the inside position instead of Foote!

I don't think Woodley has much competition as the strong side 'backer :o

I have a feeling our LBing core will look a little different this season.

We will definetly see alot more of Timmons this year he may not take the starting role this year but I can see him getting it next year.

I don't think there is going to so much be a spot being lost as much as there will be a rotation at the ILB spots between Timmons, Foote, and Farrior. It'll help keep the legs fresh out there.

However, Foote better take this urgently. He may not lose his spot at ILB in TC this year...but he can lose it throughout the season if he keeps getting trucked by RB's and being out of position in coverage.

Timmons is going to be a playmaker this year, just watch.

I agree with the 1st part of that statement in that Foote better be looking over his shoulder. But I believe that no matter how hard Foote tries he will be suplanted by Timmons by week 4. Foote has been a "sturdy" LB for the Steelers but he isn't a playmaker. I would need a chinese kid and an abacus to count how many times Larry blitzed the QB only to be taken out by the RB. It looks like the coaches are going to start Timmons on obvious passing plays do to his range in coverage. It is only a matter of time for him to be in on run plays as well. I really think Foote will be the one giving Timmons a rest rather than the other way around.

Then again this could just be "my" wishful thinking! I only hope that Timmons will invoke the shortening of his name to "LT". Because Joe Shmoe linebacker doesn't get to have those initials! Here's hoping that he gets that moniker!

The Steelers linebacker corps looks to be REAL good in the near future. Lets not forget that they picked Bruce Davis in the 3rd round. This kid has the tenacity to be a great LB. The last guy they took from UCLA was Carnell Lake and we all know how that turned out. Just as the Steelers changed Lakes position and turned him into a Pro Bowler, I believe Davis has the chance to do the same.

Man now I'm all charged up! :tt03:

Bring on the Texans!

GO BURGH!

this LB core has the potential to be the best of the NFL this season. I really excited to see Woodley playin' a major role in that defense and Foote i'll need to step up not to lose his job to Timmons. Farrior is a stud and Harrison a PBer. With Aa. Smith back, we have two of the bests 2-gap DL in the league, who are going to make sure our LBs free to make plays.

Hey my wife is Chinese and my son will be half Chinese!!! Are you saying Chinese are only good for crunching numbers?????

Just busting your minerals man, you're right, foote is not a blitzing linebacker, however a agile d-line could help.
