Notre Dame, NBC agree to five-year deal through 2015 (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/06/19/notredame.nbc.ap/index.html)

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- NBC renewed its television contract with Notre Dame football through the 2015 season on Thursday despite the Fighting Irish last year drawing their lowest ratings since the network began broadcasting their games in 1991.

NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol said the network doesn't look at year-to-year results when it comes to Notre Dame, calling the football program a premier brand that defines the network as much as the Olympics, the NFL and the U.S. Open golf championship.

"We're big believers in how Notre Dame time and time again over all these generations has maintained its strength," he said. "I don't see that going away."

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, although Ebersol said the contract is a flat fee and not based on ratings. The current contract that expires in 2010 is reported to be worth $9 million a year.

Ebersol said the important thing for Notre Dame, which hasn't won a national championship since 1988, is to be in the race to be a top 10 team in most years "for it to be a wildly successful arrangement."

"We go into this thinking that if the vast majority of the years has Notre Dame competitive in that top 10 or for that top 10 through the majority of the season, then we'll be very happy," he said.

The Irish have finished the season ranked 10th or higher just three times in the 17 years its home games have been televised on NBC -- No. 4 in 1992, No. 2 in 1993 and No. 9 in 2005. They have been finished ranked in the Top 25 in seven other seasons and finished .500 or worse five times.

The TV ratings last year, when Notre Dame went 3-9, averaged a 1.9 rating and a 5 share, down from an average ratings of 3.0 and a 7 share in 2006 when they were 10-3 and ranked No. 17 and a 3.6 ratings and a 9 share in 2005 when they were 9-3 and No. 9. The previous low ratings for Notre Dame football on NBC were 2.4 ratings and 6 shares in both 2003, when the Irish finished 5-7, and 2001, when they finished 5-6.

Ebersol said he has confidence the new deal will be good for NBC and predicted the network would continue to broadcast Irish games past 2015.

"I have no doubt that over the majority of years going forward this will be a sensational deal for both sides," Ebersol said.

The Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame's president, said the contract ensures that Irish fans will get to see all eight home games broadcast nationwide.

"That's wonderful for our fans," he said.

Money from NBC contracts have provided $26 million in financial aid for academic scholarships at Notre Dame, Jenkins said.

This contract calls for seven homes games per season and an eighth offsite home game played at a neutral stadium. The offsite game will begin next year against Washington State in San Antonio, Texas, on Oct. 31, 2009.

The only other announced offsite game is against Arizona State in Arlington, Texas, in 2013. The school also will play against unspecified teams at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., in 2011 and 2014. The offsite games will be played in prime time while the games at Notre Dame Stadium will be played on Saturday afternoons, Jenkins said.

"We just feel it's very disruptive for our students, for the academic life at the university to have a game at night," Jenkins said. "NBC has always been accommodating to us on that even though their viewership increases as the game gets later."

They need grow some and join the Big Ten.

All their rivals (Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State) are all in one place. Plus anytime they play TOSU its pretty epic.

I always felt they belonged there more than PSU. PSU's schedule was historically Big East balanced

I always though the Big East should look like this.

Penn State
Pitt
WVU
Marshall
Cincinati
South Florida

Army
Navy
Sryacuse
Boston College
UConn
Rutgers

I had a whole thing set up for all of college football..I may make a thread on it one day.

Dump Indiana and Northwestern. IU can join the MAC, Northwestern can join the Ivy League. ND and PSU round out a perfectly balanced Big Ten that has a pedigree that no other conference can ever challenge. You'd have 4 of the most storied programs in college football flying under one banner.

Hey, I'd like to see your plans. Especially if it has FSU going into the SEC and Arkansas moving into the Big 12.

I've done it too. Moved around teams to make things better.

Anyway....I wanted to make a bigger point here.

People like to gripe about ESPN. My chief complaint with ESPN is they push themselves as the brand instead of whatever sport they're broadcasting.

NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol said the network doesn't look at year-to-year results when it comes to Notre Dame, calling the football program a premier brand that defines the network as much as the Olympics, the NFL and the U.S. Open golf championship.

NBC Sports, much like CBS, defines itself by what it broadcasts.

I prefer that method to the self promotion that you get with ESPN and Fox.

Notre Dame is not worthy of having its own network to broadcast their games. The only reason they do this is so all games are guaranteed to be on. Most of the teams they play are shit. Personally I think its bogus. No College team should have their own seperate station to broadcast their games.

GROW A SET NOTRE DAME AND JOIN THE BIG TEN. In the Big Ten 3 rivals are already there in Penn State, Mcihigan, and Purdue. They pick up more marquee match ups with Ohio State and some of the time, Wisconsin. 5 big Games there with games against schools such as Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa, etc. still in the area. and if the Big Ten were to have 4 spots avaliable as it does now with the Conference schedule, they could still schedule USC and Pitt.

Northwestern and Indiana are essentially in Big Ten Country. Kind of hard for them to get anywhere else unless one goes to the MAC and one goes Big XII.

Why would they want the most overrated conference in the country? So they can dominate Penn State year in and year out?

Actually, I'd love to see that.

Watching the Big 10 network is so hard. I try too, cause I love football, but its so hard to root for any team in the Big 10 to actually win a game.

well unless they are playing that school from central PA, then I root for the other big 10 team to run up the score. But they don't show Beat Downs on the "best games" segment. Its always close games. sigh...how long til the season starts and how long until the Kitty Lions put their biggest Rival back on their schedule?

What makes this even more amusing is that Charlie Weis' exposure as a cheating fraud is on display like a pea***k

That's pretty funny. I can't use the word pea***k? It's a bird folks.

There are like 600 Million Catholics, and they all seem to be ND fans. It's a good deal for both NBC and ND. Hell, one of my ex's parents were ND alum, and they still watched every ass beating the Irish took last year (They are season ticket holders, but only go to a game or two a year). They both butter each others bread on this one...

then not to mention- The Four Horseman, Gipper, Rockne, Rudy, Parseghin. Joe Montana, Joe Theisman, Jerome Bettis.

not much of a tradition is it

i see clausen as a younger Ben, without the strength but still the escape ability. he has a big arm but he tries to do to much every play which leads to him turning it over as much as he does.

Notre Dame has great promise though, especially on the offensive side. no seniors at the skill positions and only two were juniors (one of the runnings backs and like the 4th receiver). we had two of the best freshman emerge in Michael Floyd and Kyle Rudolph and Armando Allen/Robert Hughes combo is like a lesser Reggie Bush/LenDale White combo. great upside in south bend, and its gonna start in hawaii in the hawaii bowl

if Clausen doesnt turn it up by middle of next season, i wouldnt be surprised if Weis (or whoever is there) throws in Dayne Crist, who was in some ranking number 2 behind Terrelle Pryor. (it was either Crist or Manuel who was second)

oh yea id agree Wies should be FIRED!! look at the talent that has been handed to him and he cant do jack with it. bring some1 in that KNOWS college football and how it works. Weis is a coordinator at best, and if i might say a good one. his first few years he was basically a coordinator because he was jus coaching willinghams recruits, his lack of recruting has shown, with the 3-9 last year and the 6-6 this year

He can't touch Ben. Especially when Defenses are forcing him to make boneheaded decisions.

Next year makes it or breaks it for Clausen. Next Year's schedule gives them a chance to win 7-8 games. He needs to take advantage of the cheap win games and win a game or two to make a Statement.
