So ESPN is running this poll where you can vote for the best sports franchises. The good news is that at last count we were 6th out of the 20 franchices listed (well ahead of the Pats). The bad news is we were ranked behind the Cowboys, Packers, Lakers, Celtics and Yankees.

You can rank them yourself here:

I can't believe the Sox are that far down. Even when they just won the series.

I think this is partially skewed because the Celtics and Lakers just played the championship. Lets face it, from the mid-90s up until last year I almost never saw a SINGLE celtics shirt, hat, pin, jacket etc - and I live in Rhode Island! I saw tons of Red Sox stuff everywhere, and Pats when they started winning, but the Celtics were all but dead until this year. Their fans are fairweather and if you held this same poll a year from now (assuming the Celts don't do well next year) they wouldn't even be on it.

The Steelers, Packers, and Cowboys are the big-three of football. ANYWHERE you go in the country you will find proud fans of those three teams, no matter how their team happens to be playing this year. ANYWHERE you go you can buy Steelers, Cowboys, and Packers gear. The Patriots had a chance to become a legacy team like that, but I think they blew it with their cheating and their complete lack of class both on and off the field. Especially this year, with the score run-ups, the 19-0 (ha!) nonsense, and the way they reacted to losing the Superbowl.

Sure, folks around here still like them, but there's not kids growing up all over the country who will be lifelong Pats fans.
