View Full Version : New system? (PS3, XBOX, Wii)

I've been thinking about upgrading to a new video game system... I just dont know a lot about the new ones out there.
A few things:
1. Playing online does not really interest me.
2. I play only sports games, mostly football. College basketball and NHL are intriguing (sp?) . I'd like to be able to get updated rosters, etc online.
Can you ladies/gentlemen give me your likes, dislikes and reccomendations on a new system?

I have the PS3. I don't really play online either. I play mostly Madden, racing and shooter games. I can't speak for the other systems I don't own ( but I have played them ). I really like PS3. The 2 reasons I went with the PS3 are .... I had the PS2 and still like to play the games from it and the PS3 I bought is backwards compatable. Then there is the built in Blu Ray player. Blu Rays are just awesome on my HD 60" tv. For me it's better than going to the theater.
I think the WII is geared to kids and didn't really do it for me.
The Xbox is ok but have to pay more for Blu Ray and unless they changed it you have to pay extra to get Xbox online ( PS3 is free ).
This is just my opinion. Hope you are happy with whatever you get!

If you are solely interested in playing sports games by yourself (Not online), and want a conventional gaming experience, I would go 360. I have the 360 and the Wii.
While the Wii is fun to play games like Madden on, it's more of a novelty. After a while the intrigue of swinging your arms around to actually play the game wears off.
The PS3 is what you should go with if you're interested in Blu-Ray enough, but other than that it's basically a more expensive 360 (If we're just talking sports games available for all three consoles). Oh and yes, if you want to play PS2 titles bad too that's a plus with the system.
The reason I would choose the 360, for you, though, is it's cheaper than the PS3 for just gaming. Meaning if you want to go out, purchase a system with Madden and start a franchise you'll pay less for the 360 than the PS3, but get basically equal graphics capability (Madden also runs at a higher frame rate on the 360), but at the same time, you won't be getting the (In my opinion) watered down versions of the Wii.
I believe you can update rosters for games with a Silver (free) live account on the Xbox. I could be wrong about that though as I subscribe to gold membership.
Honestly for someone who just wants to play sports games offline as it sounds like you do, there really isn't a wrong answer. It just all depends on the price you want to pay and a few other preferences such as control method.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Actually, I would go with the PS3 if you're interested in primarily sports games. Games such as MLB The Show are exclusively on Playstation.
Plus, the PS3 network is completely free, so you won't have to worry about paying if you want to download patches, rosters, or actually decide to play online. Not to mention you can use a USB flash drive with the PS3, so you can easily transfer files (music, pictures, rosters, etc.) from your computer to your PS3, without having to buy a Max Drive or whatever exclusively for XBox.

i would def go w/ the ps3.. i play enough time on the ps3 and the 360 2 know that the ps3 is a lor better... online is free like said b4 and if u do decide to play it's becoming larger and larger as it becomes older. the graphics card in the ps3 are SO so much better than the 360 and i would hope that 09 will show that.. as in other titles it did like cod 4. and i think the controller lay-out 4 sports is better on the ps3.. and in addition u get the best blu-ray dvd player which alone is like 400$....
so i say go w/ the ps3 as it has better exclusive titles.. that will be coming out

No love for the Wii here...figures...
I plan on getting either the PS3 or the Xbox 360 as a Christmas gift to myself, so I'm looking for a little info here too. I'm in the same boat as millwalldavey - not an online gamer, so that isn't important. Don't have an HDTV (yet), so that isn't a big deal either. Gameplay and graphics are most important.

Personally, I'd go the cheap way, wii
the wii works perfect for me cause I barely play my video games, so spending 400+ dollars on a console would be crazy.
sports games are great and sometimes very innovative.
though I never play online so don't now about that....
so if you plan on only playing sports games and don't have time to play too much consider the wii

I will say first off, I'm probably a bit biased towards the 360. That said, onwards.
It really depends, I bought my 360 last summer when Assassin's Creed came out and was blown away by it. Picked up Gears of War, Madden, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, March Madness, NBA Live, Halo 3, Rock Band, and Lost Odyssey all within about a four month period (hey, I get $1700 a semester back from grants!). All of them I've sunk countless hours into (sadly). I later picked up GTA IV, and with it I bought a year subscription to XBL ($50).
I bought a PS3 back in December because I needed a blu-ray player. It was a phenomenal blu-ray player and what movies I have look great when put on a big screen TV (and I mean :jawdrop: great). I played Uncharted, and it was fun, and Metal Gear obviously rocked. I recently sold it to my friend simply because the exclusive lineups weren't that interesting to me, and most of the shared games I ended up playing on my 360. If I had bought a PS3 first and hadn't already owned so many 360 games, I might've been more inclined to keep it.
Having had both systems, games played on the consoles honestly look about the same. The PS3 has higher specs, and should look better, but in actuality games look about as good on a 360, a few look better, a few look worse. I primarily play sports games with friends and RPGs by myself, but Halo 3 and Gears of War really stuck out to be as being fun, solo and with a few buddies, and with FF XII coming to the 360 I had no compelling reason to keep my PS3. I'm similar to you in that I only play online infrequently (GTA IV online is a lot of fun though), so the PS3 wins in that regard, but I had $50 to dump and figured what the hell, it's only like $4.11 a month, and the online play has been rock solid. I can't comment on the PS3, but I've read it's getting major improvements in the next few months.
In summary, personally I find the 360s exclusive games more appealing than the PS3's (God of War will be cool too), but there has been rampant hardware failure in the 360. Apparently the newer models have been fixed, as mine is ticking just fine (it is fairly loud though, the girlfriend complains but shoot, I gotta have my games :chuckle:). I miss the blu-ray capabilities, but I couldn't justify a $500 blu-ray player just yet.
For sports games, either should do fine. It mostly comes down to exclusive titles and if you're interested in a blu-ray player. One thing to note, on either system, is to make sure you don't cram it in a closed entertainment center. Both consoles need to breathe, but the 360 especially needs a fair amount of air in front and behind it (so no shoving it against a wall).
I also own a Wii, but someone above described it perfectly: after the novelty of using your hands wears off, you quickly realize why game controllers have excelled for so long. My girlfriend absolutely loves Boom Blox, so if you have someone that isn't into hardcore gaming at your side, they'll probably enjoy the Wii more than anything the 360 or PS3 has to offer. Great fun at parties, though!

I would go for the 360 first because of the amount of games and easier online. PS3 second and then the wii. The usually just sits around.
