Hey fellow Steeler fans,

Pre game #1 is only two days away! What are some of the things you are going to keep an eye on?

I am really anxious to see if they go ahead and use any of the two-back backfield with Parker and Mendenhall.

What do you feel will be some of the more key things to keep an eye out for?

OL pass blocking, at least while the first unit is in.

I am looking for the offensive line's pass-blocking, at least while the first unit is it. I'll be keeping an eye on Kemoeatu's play and on the play of whoever plays center and RG.

i really want to see how they utilize dennis dixon. while i dont think he, especially after the ACL injury, be some1 who can line up at receiver, i never thought he could. i can def see him being used in the backfield with Mendenhall and Parker in the game too. maybe line him up next to Ben and direct snap it to him and he can throw it?

i also want to see who emerges for the returner job. on the website it said that Moore, Drummond, and Bloom will be handling Punts and Kickoffs will be Moore, Mendenhall, and Willie Reid

another obvious choice is how the o-line plays

No injuries. The starters are only going to play a couple series, and the game will be the usual slop-fest of penalties, missed assignments and mistakes, so I really just want the Steelers to play the game without anyone getting hurt.

Personally I always look forward to

1.) The overall look
2.) The new kids - in this case especially Sweed and Mendenhall
3.) the bubble sitters

and this year

4.) I am intrigued by how well Ryan McBean does. His name keeps coming up in good ways in reports.

I doubt the Steelers will show the two back set in a preseason game. They don't want to show their hand this early on that sort of thing. If they do I will be surprised. I am interested to see how Hartwig plays when he gets in there. He has to be effective if our Oline troubles are going to be minimized. Mahan can go get lost somewhere and never come back and it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I also want to see Mendenhall in action. I think he will be something special down the road.

I look forward to watching the 2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers jump in.

To finding a "Kuhn" in the rough. Finding out what players are grasping the playbook vs. their luggage come first cut. Looking at the first two round draft picks and what they can do in game time situations. I want to see Ben play one series and SIT the rest of the night.

I doubt we see any trickery or anything in the preseason guys. So all this "Mendenhall and Parker in the backfield" and "how the utliize Dixon" stuff, just throw it out the window!

Why show that stuff in the preseason? So teams can be ready for it in the season? The preseason is to get guys used to playing in games and to see how new guys react in an actual football game.

Here's what we can get out of preseason games:

Can the offensive line block? Can they make holes for Parker and Mendenhall and can they keep Big Ben off of his back?

Is there any depth on the defensive line?

What will the bubble players do in a game?

Tmmon's progression, What Seed and Mendenhall have to say early on, O-Line's consistency, D-Line's depth (if it even exists), how the TEAM looks as a UNIT

.....and a victory

See if Limas can even stretch the field against 2nd and 3rd and 4th stringers..

The O Line is basically set. We will not know how they will do until season starts.

The Coaches basically know who the starters already are before pre season.. So hopefully we do not play any of the starters to much.. Do not want to see injuries in games that do not matter.

:iagree:

Sometimes preseason indicates where the regular season may be going (in retrospect the 0-4 preseason in 2006 showed the Steelers were not ready to play that year) but it usually means nothing - just getting to Sept 7 with no significant injuries is all I want out of these exhibition games

...and how many of those come to mind? For me, I immediately think of the duel between Willie Parker and Brown (wasn't that his name?) in 2004 and also the first few time I saw Joey Porter get those two sacks against the Redskins back in the 90's. Those are always great to watch.

3. What will Timmons do....

4. An overall look at the new guys...

like redst3, i wanna see how mcbean does. i wanna see what dixon may have to offer but i just have a feeling he will do poorly. i wanna see all the rookies, because im just psyched to see them in the black and gold for the first time.

but im not looking for anybody to prove anything. i think it was in 2004 we played the eagles in the pre-season. we came out on FIRE! ricardo colclough picked off a mcnabb pass for a td and returned a punt for a td. i believe we also returned a kick for a td, becoming the 1st team to do all three in a single game (pre regular or post season).

i think im right on all these details. anyways colclough looked GREAT. didnt prove anything though....

im just hyped to see the steelers playing in a game once again :tt02:

-The Offensive Line. Run or Pass. They have been the eyes-on controversy for months.
-To a lesser extent, the Defensive Line.
-The youngsters. Namely Sweed and Mendenhall.
-The Steelers as a whole. Haven't seen them since January.

- Overall team swagger/attitude

- Bruce Davis

- Determine whether or not Mendenhall will run the same way in the pros as he did in college, one cut and go

- Timmons athleticisms or Foote's experience?

- Can Sweed see? =P

Dude, you are all over it with that post.

Ryan is gonna make our secondary alot more solid if he is healthy. The guy meant alot more to the team that I thought, I guess Anthony Smith had me blinded by his smoke screen. But all this hinges on the healthy of Troy Polomalu! If he is not healthy again this season, then it is time for the Steelers to start looking for a replacement at SS.
Our D line is one of my worries. I remember all too well how our d-line performed after Aaron Smith went down.

-I'm really curious to see how Timmons performs, I'd love to see him have the type of game Woodley had last year during the Hall of Fame game. Im nervous Timmons can't understand the system, I want to be shown I'm wrong on that.

- How the O-line performs against first team D's..

- See Ben out there as little as possible

- How mendenhall hits the hole, and how aggressive of a runner he is, while adjusting to the new speed of the game.. Tomlin basically called him weak and non-aggressive during goal line drills.

- Can Bruce Davis step up like Woodley did last year at this point..

- Dixon to Sweed, TD.

HometownGal

As others have mentioned, I am going to be keeping my eyes glued to the OL. I also want to see a huge improvement from our ST's, including what Eddie Drummond brings to the return game and if Ernster can boot the ball successfully.

I also am anxious to see how well our newbs Mendenhall and Sweed do.

NOTE: I know it is only a pre-season game, but damn it - I hope Arians utilizes our TE's more as receivers this season, especially Heath. It's long overdue.

I've come to believe that you really can't tell anything from preseason games. I've been to a few (I have a friend who has season tickets to the 49ers, and they make you buy the preseason games too), and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how well you play in those games versus how well you'll do in the regular season. I've seen guys completely tear it up with the first-team offense and then sit on the bench all year. I've seen people play like crap in the preseason and then have an awesome year. Seems like guys' performance in the preseason varies wildly depending on how ready their opponent is, and who's half-assing it and who's not.

As stated earlier theres not a lot to gather from the preseason.

Therefore I use these games to get myself back into game shape.

I'll start slow......half a fifth of Jack tomorrow night.....I'll build up my tolerance from there. My ultimate goal is to be able to watch the replays next summer and not remember half the game. Gives me something to look forward to in the offseason.

McBean might be the most athletic DE on our roster & but as a football player. I think he is slacking to the point that I would be surprised if he even makes the roster. I think Eason sticks over him and that should tell you what I think about McBean.

Things I look for:

Keep the injuries at a minimal

Let the rookies battle

Check out the ST coverage units

Pray the O-line starts to gel

Anthony Smith hits the oppositions WR for a change

I know reports from ryan have been both good and bad, but give the kid a chance to show what he's got during the pre season games.

he has a positive and that is he is also very athletic on special teams, which could help him make the roster.

guess this quote-

"When you talk about what you look for in a first game, you're looking for some young guys not to be surprised by the speed of the game. Hopefully, we play to an acceptable standard in terms of assignments, but you know, first time out, there will be those issues.

"More than anything, we're looking for competitors, the guys who can step up when the lights are on inside stadiums."

I really look forard to seeing the rookies in action and 2nd year players as well. Lawrence Timmons and Lamar Woodley and DB William Gay are all players that I want to see make a difference on the steelers team in '08.
Now, our rookies from this spring like Mendenhall and Sweed of course I want to see them alot and see them show us why the Steelers were so high on them. But also I want to see LB Davis in some action as well as QB Dennis Dixon in some real game action. I know that I saw him play a couple games while at Oregon and the guy has alot of speed and I think that he fits in nicely as our no.3 guy and maybe even our no.2 guy next season.
What does everyone think abou the Steelers having him hold for FG's and Extra points... just gives them the threat of a fake on FG's ya know?...
