Cincinnati has agreed to pay former Bengal (now a Redskin) Matthias Askew $500,000 to settle his federal lawsuit that alleged that he was cut from the team after police used a Taser on him three times during a 2006 arrest.

The Bengals say now that Askew's arrest had nothing to do with his removal from the team, that he was cut because of his on-field performance. He'd played only five games in two seasons. The team also drafted Domata Peko that year, who came in as a rookie and impressed coaches, giving the Bengals other options at defensive tackle. (Full Story (http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080809/NEWS0107/808090331/1055/NEWS))

The Bengals certainly have had their legal woes, though this guy apparently is completely innocent.

Maybe Chris Henry will sue them, too. Didn't he have all charges dropped for the incident he got cut for? Oh, I forgot.........he's broke!

Sorry Matthias, you didn't get cut because you got tasered; you got cut because you suck.

....But with an officer involved having been found to have used excessive force for using his Taser on Askew three times and an economist estimating Askew's loss at $5.7 million, the city's lawyers decided paying the money was worth it to limit the city's financial risk.

The REAL reason he was awarded this settlement - had nothing to do with him getting cut. As CS85 noted, he got cut because he sucked. I'd like to know how they figured his loss at $5.7 mil, though. He apparently suffered no permanent injury or disability.

If I had to guess:

There were mental damages (though any player drafted by the Bungles should be able to claim that)

Defamation of character (again, any player drafted by them should be able to claim that)

Probably a few other asinine claims along those lines.

Hey, it said they found the officer used excessive force by tasering him three times. It didn't say there was anything wrong with tasering him twice.
