which steelers linemen will be on the official O-line roster for week 1?

no need to specify starters.

mahan(G/C)
hartwig(G/C)
kemo(G)
simmons(G)
stapleton(G)
starks(T)
essex(T)
smith(T)
colon(T/G)

hills will either be cut or placed on the PS. i am thinking he will be cut.

i think legursky could sneak in if the steelers decide to keep 10 linemen. if they choose 9 then he will suffer the same fate as hills.

mods: i apologize if there is a thread(s) similar to this one on the board. i saw a couple of threads dealing with the O-line, but it didn't appear they focused on my particular question.

I agree with 4 out of 5 of your starters, LS.

I think the opening day line will consist of:

Smith - Kemoeatu - Mahan - Simmons - Colon

Yup, that looks about right. I think Hills ends up on P.S..

Mahan, Starks, Essex and Stapleton are quality backups. Stapleton looks to be on the rise.

The Center position has yet to be determined but fyi.....Hartwig is starting Thursday and took all the snaps with Ben in practice yesterday. Leftwich worked with Mahan.

I think they have been starting Mahan to make Hartwig earn the spot by beating out someone rather than being given it.

we shall see, my money's on Hartwig

I got:

Smith-Kemo-Hartwig-Simmons-Colon

Essex, Mahan, Starks in reserve.

Honestly I think they either keep 10 and Hills, or they will cut either Stapleton or Mahan and keep HIlls.

Hills is weak and Fred Gibson proved there is no guarantee a 4th rounder makes it, but Smith, Starks, Essex are all UFA's with Colon an RFA at the end of the season. OT depth is weak and Hills should stay.

Big money in some of those "backups". Guess that means we're getting better or just plain overpaid.
I will have to agree with those though. Wasn't Stapleton also listed as backup Center? more added value there.

The money is already allocated, so doesnt factor into the decision. Most likely Starks last season with the team. I too see more upside in Stapleton than Mahan and think if Hartwig is the #1 C, that Stapleton should be retained.

Tough to keep 10 O linemen, 3TE's, 3QB's and a KR specialist though.

Yeah, I know. It was a general thought. We beat that horse too much already. If it all equates to wins, that's all that counts.

The horse was beat to glue. I am in the camp that we paid Mahan too much because there was no succession planning for Hartings retirement(aka, Mangold or Khalil) and similarly with Starks.

My move was to let Starks go this offseason and play with Smith, Colon to start and Essex and a draft pick like Anthony Collins or UFA like Shane Olivea to backup. Subtracting Starks $7mil allowed the ability to sign a FA for depth, while drafting a prospect.

I'd love to see the FO right a wrong and keep Stapleton over Mahan, eat his salary and next season look at either Re-signing Smith or using the Salaries of the departing Smith and Starks to get a FA LT.....then the rest shakes out as Kemo, Hartwig(Stapleton), Simmons, Colon. Backups are then Essex, Hills, (Stapleton/Hartwig) and a rookie like interior lineman like Alex Mack.

Good point. I was all about drafting Mangold. But they did get Santonio Holmes instead that year. It drives me crazy trying to decide which one i would rather have :banging:

Yeah, looking back I would say Holmes was the better pick. The only other guys I was interested in were Greg Jennings(was gone in the 2nd before our pick) and Demitrius Williams(not the impact that Holmes has)

Still, I have been wanting to get a young C for years instead of waiting for this crunch. Jake Grove, Nick Leckey, Sam Satele are all names I have been wanting to see in B&G.

We traded up to get Ricardo Colclough, but cant try and trade up to get a decent young C late in rounds 1 or 2 :banging:

wow, not even giving him a chance aren't you

that's why I'm glad we're just fans and make no decisions

I have to think the Steelers will try and hold onto Hills. Offensive linemen (particularly tackles) can take a while to develop. If I remember correctly, Smith struggled early in his career. I agree that Mahan got scapegoated last year. Still, while we know there is a battle between Mahan and Hartwig for the starting center job, might there also be a battle between Stapleton and the loser of the Mahan/Hartwig battle? I mean if Stapelton has improved he certainly has more upside than either of those two players. Plus, with Essex practicing at guard and tackle we are more solid in the back-up role than we might have thought.
