Steelers place Batch on injured reserve
Saturday, August 30, 2008
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers have decided to place veteran quarterback Charlie Batch on the injured reserve list, ending his season and ensuring that Byron Leftwich will be the top backup to Ben Roethlisberger the remainder of the year.

Also, the team has decided to release wide receiver Willie Reid, a former third-round draft choice, and former Pro Bowl return specialist Eddie Drummond as part of the cuts that will be announced later today by Coach Mike Tomlin. The Steelers have to get to a mandatory 53 players by 6 p.m. today.

As part of the process, the team is considering a trade that would involve one of their veteran backup offensive linemen -- tackle Max Starks, center Sean Mahan and tackle Trai Essex.

Batch, 33, had surgery to repair a broken right collarbone after he was injured in the team's first preseason game Aug. 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles. His contact with the Steelers expires at the end of the season, but he will still be paid his $1.355 million salary this season, even on IR.

I guess Baker made it.

Trading away one lineman so they can keep 9, keep Hills and get some value for the trade......would be a great move!!

Gah, give me a heart attack. Thought you was talkin' 'bout Willie P! :chuckle:

I was kinda high on Willie R, but I guess Baker got the spot. Drummond wasn't worth anything more than camp fodder.

A trade? Hmmm. Interesting. For who or what?

Good luck to Charlie. Man, if only I could make that much money for being injured....

Reid should have been cut last year. He is an ok receiver but we already have enough depth at receiver and he didn't work out as a punt returner. Just another wasted draft pick.

I bet he has a nice hoody to wear on the sidelines!!!

Can only dress 45 on gameday and if he cant cover or return kicks he likely wont dress. Then again, he may be the #4 WR ahead of Sweed as the season starts.

I am glad to see Baker made it but I also heard a rumor that Tyrone Carter was getting cut

Good riddance to Willie Reid. He has cost us games in the past with bad punt returns. He is an underachieving receiver. I am glad to see that Dallas Baker will get his shot. Ben will have TWO tall receivers for targets.

What team calls it right with 100% of their picks? The draft is a crapshoot - always has been, always will be.

No shockers here. Baker showed a lot in TC and played well against the Panthers.

Trading away one or two of our extra OL looks like a smart move if we can get something of true value in return.

Get that collarbone healed, Charlie.

Such a shame we wasted a 3rd round draft pick on Willie Reid. I can't remember ever being impressed by his performance as a wide receiver or punt/kick returner. Thank God they finally gave up on him.

It's not like the Steelers organization hasn't wasted #1 draft picks in the past either.

Always fun to look back at who was still available then.

Max Jean Gilles, Ko Simpson, Will Blackmon, Demetrius Willams, Gabe Watson, Leon Washington, Elvis Dumerville.

I wanted Williams or Dumerville. Imagine if they went Leon Washington to use as a KR???

darn i thought reid could make it.. i guess that he waited too long to show he can actually play.. a trade would be nice.. they could be looking for an extra draft pick next yr to help out the both sides of the line

I just can't get it out of my mind watching Reid fumble very important KRs that cost us games. I know people make mistakes, but you CANNOT MAKE MISTAKES on kick returns to give the other team field position. None of the kick returners looked very good in preseason. Lets hope Moore or Mendenhall turn into great kick returners. I think our scheme as a whole is the problem with the punts and kick returns. We need to get rid of Ligapukeski.

The Steelers missed on Willie Reid, but they hit where it matters the most: The First Round Picks. You cannot afford to miss on those. Remember the days of Tim Worley and Huey Richardson? The majority of the Steelers first rounders this decade have contributed to the team in one way or another. Yes, even Simmons.

The jury is out on Mendenhall, but Timmons is coming along nicely.

I am talking for something of value (aka a pick 4th round or above) - this sounds like a salary dump to me

Getting anyone to eat Starks contract this year will be a neat trick

I think you are remembering Santonio Holmes in his rookie season with PR. Reid seemed to spend most of his Steelers career injured or deactivated for gameday.

I dont think its a salary dump. The fact is they have 10 linemen they like and only want to keep 9 on the roster, so they are trying to get value for at least one of them.

The problem is finding one that could use an experienced backup like Mahan or a high priced bacup OT with "potential" in Starks. Most teams would rather just pick them up on the waiver wire or in free agency next season.

I am not sure, but is a sign and trade possibile with Starks?? Trading him to some team with a 4 year contract so that his cap value isnt that high as the $6.9mil tag?? Should have just let him go in the offseason:noidea:

I remember the Holmes ones as well but I could swear there was a couple by Reid somewhere along the line. But being an old timer my mind does not always remember everything very well. Whatever the case, I never liked Reid. He just doesn't seem to have a nose for finding the holes and never seemed very fast.

I'm a little surprised by Reid's cut. Not too surprised I guess, but a little. I can't help but feel he still has potential that just went unrealized with us.

Your mind is working just fine. It was in the same stretch where Colclough was dropping punts. We tried like three guys in a row including Reid and Colclough and no one could hang on to the ^%&$&%^& ball. At that time I didn't even care about yardage, I wanted to send out Hines Ward to fair catch every last punt and take zero yards. At least we would have the ball.

Thanks for backing me up on that one. I didn't think I was crazy. I remember Coclough being bad as well. I just hope that if Holmes ends up back there again, he has matured enough to not make those same mistakes he used to. I would prefer that Mewelde Moore do most of it because that was his specialty in Minnesota and I think he was very good at it.

I agree completely with you, except instead of "last year", I would've said "three years ago." Honestly, I was amazed both this year and last year to find out that he was still on the team. I thought he would've been a journeyman mediocre receiver with the 49ers by now.

Yeah, unlike a lot of other sports, first- or second-round picks are actually worth a lot more in football today than in other sports, or than they were in football 20 years ago. It took me a while to get used to that. You used to see teams trade them away all the time, but now, not so much.

I actually saw a lot of potential in Reid....but fact of the matter is, if he can't figure out the return game, we're way too deep at WR to keep him on the team.
