Surprised nobody commented on them yet.

It's night and day so far compared last year. The return game is a little shaky, but the coverage on returns have been amazing. They get another test next Sunday with Jones-Drew.

The only issue I have with the Special Teams right now is well...Why do opposing teams' punters seem to have coming out parties against us? It can't be helped, but this is odd.

punters have really been pissing me off lately.. i just expect punters to boot it 60 yards now. the special teams have made a complete 180 from last year.. we are even stopping guys before they hit the 20.. i dont remember us doing that once last season.

Watching us get out-punted like we have makes me miss Sepulveda a lot. Berger is below average.

I think the punt returns will get more exciting with Santonio back there. He has the ability to take some to the house.

I would really like for the Steelers to have a great kickoff return specialist. there's so many nowadays and they are ultimate gamechangers.

Kick coverage has been awesome. They were a little shaky vs. Philly but they have cleaned up a lot of problems. Guys like Woods, Madison, Bailey, and Timmons have been solid.

Coverage has been awesome, returns have been fairly poor. However, after the past few years, as long as there are no muffs I'm satisfied.

we need a guy like darren sproles.. i love the little cannon balls that move. we need to get Trindon Holliday whenever he comes out.

Yeah, I thought Ligashesky and Zeirline were coaching for their jobs this season. So far Ligs and his ST coverage teams are looking good.

Considering we really dont have a decent return specialist, its hard to expect many big returns from this unit.

I love the ST, this is the first time in years that I dont gedt nervous when I see the KR returning the kick

I couldnt be happier with them, well thats a lie, i would love a returned for a TD but what can I say I'm a little selfish lol

I just hope he doesn't get hit hard. There was one return he had last game where it could've been a lot worse than it was. I thought he'd had his bell rung for a second or two.

As far as the kick return its shaky and now with Mendy gone i wanna see who will be put in the back with Moore. Our kick off return defense looks outstanding only giving up one or two runs for a big gain im extremely impressed.

I honestly like Holmes as our punt returner its all about speed and quickness these days(Hester), and Holmes has it all. He looked pretty good to against the Ravens and he being effective will boost our field position.

Im sick of playing good punters ahh! There killing us with field position almost every time pinning us under the 20 yard line which stinks!

i think dookie will probably become the other kick return man with mendenhall out.. he was while he was here before.

Yeah the return game can be better, but at least this season I'm not secretly praying our punt return man actually catches the ball. Kudos to the special teams.

Way to go special teams look alot better then last year we are getting down the field quicker and making tackles that is the way we need to do it.

I'd go as far as saying that we are 3-1 because of special teams. Last years special teams might have cost us both the Cleveland and the Baltimore games.

The biggest improvement has been in tackling.

And all you all missing the wasted draft pick (i.e. hurt punter)

we are averaging a yard better this year

last year we had a net avg of 38.4

this year we have a net avg of 39.2

noted tackling is better or maybe the hang time is better or berger does not out kick the coverage

its not that i do not like daniel but when we can pick a guy up off of the street and get the same numbers, why not draft a real football player

players like woods and fox are doing a good job tackling on ST

i like both woods and fox too. fox played at ga tech, i did not expect much out of him but i like they way he plays.

The only reason we're getting the same numbers is that teams aren't starting past their own 40 3/4 of the time due to the vastly improved coverage. I'm actually almost to the point of not holding my breath when we punt for a change. Berger is not a good punter, and I don't believe for a second that our numbers wouldn't be quite a bit better with Sepulveda, again, due to the vastly improved coverage.

I agree, the coverage has been great, I just hate to jinx a good thing. So as far as I'm conserned, it needs to improve. We haven't caused a fumble yet on a punt return so I want to see that.

Also, Do we have a "punt block" anywhere in our special team's playbook. I mean come on, once in a while, send the house and put pressure on the Punter so he isn't taking 40 seconds to set his feet and kick a mile high into the air and 65 yards every time.

I believe it's the tackling/coverage which has improved. That based on the personel we have this year. They seem to be taking some better angles and getting off blocks a lot better this year.
Also, I think the numbers would be improved even more if Sep was playing. While you may not agree with the positioning of the pick, I hardly think he can be compared to "a guy off the street". If he was on the street, someone would have picked him up pretty quickly.

HTG, are you keeping him in you basement?:chuckle: "It puts the lotion in the basket."

hey berger was a probowler only a decade ago, hehe

so he is not a total bum. the stats speak for themselves, unless you have a top 5 punter, they are all about the same statiscally. so why waste a good pick on a punter. save those for players like reid.

As long as Holmes/Moore/whoever doesn't fumble the ball, I'm happy.

Coverage has been great and I hope it continues.

I have been quite pleased with the performance of the special teams. I think Tomlin made a special effort to address this area and it shows. Last year I think bad special teams play cost us at least 3 games that we could have won.

i think dan is a very good punter.. and he prob would of been better this yr as it was his 2nd... and at least we knew that dan would make a tackle if need be instead of those sliding tackles that punters or kickers do

I agree! The coverage has been phenomenal lately. The returns haven't been great, but I don't shudder every time the ST has to come onto the field.

If we had an electric return man, I really think we could have one of the better ST's in the league.

Retroskfy has been pretty solid so far.

The special teams have been a HUGE improvement. A nice change from last year when I spent every kickoff and punt with my heart in my throat waiting to watch them give up another big return. The big disappointment is our punting. Anytime we get into a defensive struggle we struggle on the field position battle with MItch Berger. I can't believe there isn't anybody stronger available because right now he is really a handicap. We are 2nd to last in the league in average punt distance. There have just been too many times this season when the offense has gotten pinned deep and then we can't even get a punt past midfield. It's amazing how few points we've given up considering how many times opponents are being handed a short field.
