CLEVELAND - Just when prized rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards was starting hit his stride, his season is over.

The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Edwards suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in Sunday's 20-14 home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Browns coach Romeo Crennel, Edwards will undergo surgery once the swelling goes down.

Edwards, the third overall pick in this year's draft, was injured with 9:02 left in the fourth quarter when he tried to haul in a long pass from fellow rookie Charlie Frye down the right sideline. Edwards immediately grabbed his knee and had to be helped from the field.

"(Edwards) was making an effort to make another big play for the team," Crennel said. Prior to the injury, the 22-year-old Edwards was enjoying the best game of his brief NFL career. He had five catches for 86 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns.

In his first nine games, Edwards had 27 catches for 426 yards and one touchdown, an 80-yarder in his second game. He missed two games in October with a serious arm infection.

"We anticipate he will be back with us next year and continue to provide those plays he did (Sunday)," Crennel said.

Edwards won the Biletnikoff Award last year as the nation's top collegiate receiver after establishing Michigan records with 97 receptions and 1,330 yards. He had 15 receiving touchdowns to complete his college career with a school-record 39.

This comes at a bad time for him.. with the season mostly over this could affect his recovery time for next year.

well this sucks for edwards but at least that's one less threat we have to worry about when we play them in a few weeks, cause we gonna have to focus on that beast of a running back they have

Actually, this won't mean much for the Bengals game. Frye will be starting, so expect to see more Frisman Jackson and maybe even Josh Cribbs, players Frye has developed a repoire with as the #2 QB.

I would not be shocked if the Browns beat the Bengals this week. If Cincy rests on their laurels and actually starts believeing their own bullshit hype, they may be ripe for an upset at home. The Browns are a dangerous team for anybody to face, since they are eliminated from the playoffs and are looking to play spoiler...they could do anything at any time. It also makes their game with us Christmas Eve dangerous...

Actually, they roomed Frye and Edwards together during training camp and on the road to help develop a chemistry between the two. It's Crennel's attempt at building the future together. Edwards was actually favored more by Frye than Dilfer. It's a hit to their limited arsenal.

Edwards was working with the A team as of a couple weeks ago, and Frye got the B team.
