Do the Steelers retire numbers? I know of only 1 number that is retired #70.

Are the rest just off limits Like some of the following 75, 59, 12, 32, 58, 52, 88,82, 47

I know in the past 82 was worn by Thigpen & 88 by Hastings.

im also thinking maybe after Townsend retires #26 will be off limits once Woodson goes in the hall

There is just one retired number, other numbers just are unoficially off-limits by the equipment coordinator.

Yes, only one retired. The other's aren't completely off limits though (Maybe #'s 12, 32, 58 and 75), but most of the others have been worn recently.

82 was also worn by Antwaan Randel El
88 by Courtney Hawkins
52 by Mike Jones ("The Tackler")
...etc...

I wonder if we'll see #36 being worn anytime soon though?

It looks like they would retire some of those numbers I didn't know that only one jersey was retired.
That is some interesting information.

Mike Jones was 51. Bobby Shaw wore 82 before El.Nobody has worn 52 since Mike Webster.

Ernie Stautner wore #70.

No one has worn 52 since 1989.

The steelers unofficialy retired Kuhn's number

Noticed how there hasn't been a #42 the past two seasons? :chuckle:

If Kuhns was retired then so was Kreiders 35.

Hmm. You're right.

I forgot about Bobby Shaw. Don't he and Kordell hold the Steelers record for the longest pass play from scrimmage ( courtesy of the Baltimore Ravens)? :chuckle:

We should raise a "#42" flag before every home game like they do out in Seattle. :drink:

In thought Mark "Magnum PI" Malone held that record. :noidea:

If the Steelers retired all the greats numbers, would there be enough to dress 53?
I would look like college with guys wearing the same number, or 00, 01, 02 etc.

12, 32, 52, 58, 59, 75 - I don't think will ever be used.

I'm also a 23 fan, but I haven't been able to find one yet...at least that looked any good. The jersey not the player.

Funny thing is...the "new" numbers aren't even accurate. Oh well.

I still, however, like the block style numbers. :tt03:

To the left, to the left, all the jerseys need the numbers like the picture to the left. :chuckle:

12 Should be retired from the entire NFL simply because Terry Bradshaw was that freaking Awesome.

Everyone else with 12 should be forced to shoot themselves for daring to wear his number. Even Namath should apologize for wearing 12 prior to Terry and recognize that the Jersey number 12 was reserved by God for Terry and that by wearing it, Nathan practiced in anti-christ like behavior.

But heck...that's just me.

I got kinda dumb question. What kind of #s the fans pick? I understand that the retired #s r kinda no-touchy. But r the fans allowed 2 get any #s on their custom jerseys?

Anyhow know why the Steelers unofficially retire jersey numbers? It makes sense to have a ceremony and have the players' number mounted or displayed in a ring of fame. I could see us waiting until the player is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

It's a shame that Jack lambert's 58 isn't retired. The best to ever do it.

They'd be running out of numbers sooner or later if they retired all HOF guys.

I think they don't want to draw the line between the greats of the 70's by retiring onl;y some.

I'd retire Whizzer White's number but put it on a Supreme court Justice's robe so everyone will know that we're the only team to produce a supreme court justice.

found this under wickipeda everything you wanted to know about retired football #'s but were afraid to ask.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_number_(American_football)#Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers also don't officially retire uniform numbers (the exception being Ernie Stautner, who played before the dynasty years of the 1970's). However, numbers 12, 32, 36, 52, 58, 63, and 75 have not been issued since those respective players retired, while numbers 1, 31, 47, and 59 have had minimal usage since. Number 35 was worn by two Hall of Famers (Bill Dudley and John Henry Johnson) and was most recently worn by former starting fullback Dan Kreider in 2007.

John Stallworth's number 82 has been reissued several times as have Lynn Swann's number 88; this is mainly because of the limited number of numbers available for wide receivers and tight ends (until recently, those positions could only wear numbers in the 80s). However, since the NFL relaxed the rule and started allowing receivers to wear jersey numbers 10-19 in addition to 80's numbers, number 82 hasn't been reissued at all since Antwaan Randle El left the team in free agency following the team's win in Super Bowl XL. The same hasn't been said for Swann, as backup tight end Jon Dekker currently wears number 88. Hines Ward's number 86 will likely follow suit once his football career is over due to his popularity with Steeler fans as well as since surpassing Stallworth as the team's all-time leading receiver.
