Steelers Re-Sign Punter Ernster, Release Berger

PITTSBURGH ó The Steelers signed fourth-year free agent punter Paul Ernster to their roster today and released veteran punter Mitch Berger.

Ernster, 26, was claimed off waivers by the Steelers from the Detroit Lions on July 29 of this year, after second-year punter Daniel Sepulveda suffered a season-ending knee injury. Ernster was released Aug. 30, prior to the regular season.

Ernster (6-0, 217) has played in 19 games during his NFL career after a college career at Northern Arizona. He averaged 41.7 yards on 80 punts in 2006 playing for the Denver Broncos, while also serving as a kickoff specialist, kicking off 75 times including 19 touchbacks.

Ernster was active for three games with the Broncos in 2006, and for one game each with the Broncos and the Cleveland Browns in 2007. He was originally drafted by Denver in the seventh round (239th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft. He kicked off during the teamís season opener versus Miami during his rookie year before being added to Denverís practice squad.

The Steelers made room on their roster by releasing Berger, who was averaging 41.9 yards per punt in eight games.

About time. We're lucky his booming 30 yarders didn't cost us against Washington.

I understand the guy is hurt, but that should have been corrected before Monday night.

Glad they did SOMETHING. I was surprised at their lack of action.

I was wondering how long this would go on before he was released.

FINALLY! I was wondering if they were waiting for Jeff Reed to be forced into punting because Berger couldn't go.

I was waiting for one of those hamstrings to burst during a punt...

Glad we finally released him. He's a tough punter, but man, that was hard to watch.

Man, tough life for a punter. Doing decent, and playing on a good team, then you get injured and your outta here. Oh well, maybe Ernster can kick the ball 45 yards, and maybe he will be a kickoff specialist like we saw in the preseason.

Somehow Berger convinced the coaches he would be fine for last Monday's game, and while he managed to get through it, he could no longer hide the obvious injury.

I don't think the coaches were going to take anymore chances with him.

He did manage to get one last gameday check... :chuckle: maybe his last.

I hope Ernster can hold as Berger was also the holder. Something to keep an eye on..
I was also getting very frustrted watching us loose the field positio battle the past few games. 30 yard punts just dont cut it..

Guess this luck only happens in Pittsburgh!

I mean...how many teams lose their number one Punter, to be replaced by a man with the unenviable name of........... Mitch Burger.....that's a Media Mans dream headline.

At least Sepulveda sounds like a Stephen King Novel.......and could really punt!!
F**k it....... just let Jeff Reed punt the ball as well....come on, it's not like kickers have too much to do anyway.............just win the the game in big pressure moments!................(and yep, before you burn me, that was English sarcasm!! :)....Oops!

Hey...I'm not dissing on the Mitch, (anyone named after The Hoff in Baywatch has my vote :) )...he did his best.......but WTF......we got a lame Punter as well as the rest of the sh*t that's befallen this team this season.........

And the Steelers still reside at 6 -2. Now that's class! That's a Big Bad D

well i wonder if the team released him since he did receive a hamstring injury... but paul should be an upgrade over the injured mitch

But a serious question, regarding Punting!

When was the last time Pittsburgh tried a 'Fake Punt'? - (That's an honest and serious question).

And why don't teams, when on the 40/50 Yard line try it more often? (I know it works less than on side kicks......but if they're not suspecting it....it could just work!....once in a......season). I mean, if Tomlin whats to start the game with an On Side kick, why not go for a fake punt, sometime during the game?)

Didn't we have like an 80 yard fake punt on the last game of the year about 5 or 6 years ago against Baltimore? I think it was to Polamalu.

Well.....I sense another one against The Colts........

F**k it...4th and whatever ,midfield, the way this D's playing......why not

After all, The Steelers were written off as soon as the Schedule came out................and their busy f**king on all the so called Sports Writers so far, so why not keep them entertained!

Im not here to pick on Berger or say he was bad, but im sure not many of us could go out there with two bad hamstring injuries and punt and i thank him for his time and effort.

I agree. He was not doing a bad job until he got hurt. Thanks for your contribution, Mitch. (sorry you get a ring out of it. :wink02:)

I remember that play - when we lost to Ravens in OT that game and beat them up for the play-offs. I think the fake punt play was to Chris Hope (now with Tenesse).

I'm glad they finally did something you could see Berger in pain on every punt and not kicking far I am glad he tried to play through the pain for the team but he could have costed us the game also aginst the skins with those 30 yard punts.

My ?? are 1, does berger still count on the salary cap? 2,and don't he get some kind of money for being let go? and I also agree that leftwitch should start against indie!!

i am not sure if still counts on the salary cap but since berger is a vested veteran he will get paid his remaining salary.

Very class post, steelpride. :applaudit::hatsoff: I wholeheartedly agree.

Why couldn't we have re-signed Gardocki? :wink02: I have just one question about Ernster - has he ever had a punt blocked? :noidea::chuckle:

Let's see you people even walk with a pulled Hammy. I admired Berger for going out there and playing hurt, even being a punter. At least he wasn't complaining to be out 4-5 weeks for a pinky finger like Tony Homo...

THANK YOU MITCH, may you play for another team before long. I know you got balls.

For a guy to just play through that injury deserves our respect

But like tomlin said, his play just wasn't good enough

Good luck Berger. Welcome Ernster :tt03:

As far as the fake punt goes i think last year against the rams we did one and, it worked to dookie.
