View Full Version : Desperately Needing Your Prayers

Once again, my dear friends, I must ask for your most fervent prayers.

Next Wednesday, November 19, 2008, I must again go into the hospital for surgery. This surgery is a very serious procedure and involves the surgeons having to cut across the top of my head and remove the titanium mesh that was implanted into my forehead (which has recently become infected) during my second cancer surgery in 2001. My surgeons are excellent and very caring individuals and I'm sure they will do the best job possible, but I must admit, I am just absolutely terrified. I had a similar surgery during that second cancer surgery and I am trying so hard to reach within me and pull out that inner strength I know is there. After this surgery, I will have to wait 60-90 days and have a second similar surgery to implant new titanium mesh. What is so miraculous about the mesh is that the surgeons do such a remarkable job that no one can tell that I have it in there! I will be swollen for several weeks and most likely in a great deal of pain post-op and probably have racoon eyes again, but I can deal with that. I will have to be on a ventilator for 24 hours post-op, which is standard protocol for any complicated surgery involving the head and brain areas, and anyone who has ever had that unfortunate experience can tell you that it is very uncomfortable and extremely unpleasant. :horror:

I am not only asking for your thoughts and prayers, but also some much needed encouragement and some laughs before I go into the hospital next week. With complete honesty and from my heart, I say to all of you that I truly love you like family and I am going to fight with everything I have to get through this and get back here ASAP, as I enjoy this forum and all of you so much!:hug: I am expected to be in the hospital for anywhere from 3-6 days and I ask that you all give Gary your utmost cooperation while I am out of commission. He works very hard, as I do, to do the best job he can around here and gives so much of his time and energy to making sure this board runs as smoothly as possible so that everyone - whether a Steelers fan or fan from another team - can totally enjoy their SF experience! In other words - y'all be good or I'll be kicking some hineys when I get back home!:buttkick: :wink02:

Thank you for your prayers - it means so very much to me.

Love,
Marianne

Marianne,

You know I'm not a religious guy so prayer really isn't my thing, but I do wish you all the best and hope for a quick recovery.

If ya want to make me a moderator I'll be sure to keep 'em in line while you're mending. I just need to dust off my banhammer. http://www.pisnnapalm.com/smilies_files/hammer.gif

Marianne

It took some doing...But I was able to reach your doctors and asked them to put titanium, not only on your skull but on your whole skeletal system. They will also be placing three spring loaded blades on each hand.

The good news is that you will be in the next X-men movie.....the bad news is that going through airport security will be a BIOTCH!!!!

(I think the spring loaded blades will help you with moderating this forum.)

Seriously...you know that you have my thoughts and prayers...if we could all be there to hold your hand through this...we would. We all love ya and wish ya the best!!!!

Stay positive and know that you have people from all around this planet thinking of you.

We all know you as a tower of strength on this board and we know that you will be all of that plus more when you go into hospital.

Before you walk in those hospital doors put your best Hines Ward game face on and smile as big as you can right back at everybody. That way your guaranteed to bounce right back up after the operation.

This afternoon, I heard from the nurse who schedules the surgeries and my surgery is scheduled for 12:00 noon tomorrow. I have to be at the hospital at 9:30 AM. I was relieved to hear that the surgery will be performed at UPMC-Presby instead of UPMC-Montefiore, so that was a huge relief. I had a very bad experience at Montefiore in 2003 and I wasn't too keen on going back there.

I was in to see my ENT doc today (who saved my life in 2001) and he is going to be in the O.R. tomorrow while I'm being operated on. He refers a lot of cases to my surgeon and they've worked together for years. He said he is going to be there mostly for moral support, as he and I are very close. It is comforting to know that I will definitely have an "angel" by my side during the operation!

Thank you all again for your prayers, love and support at a time I need them the most!

Yeah, it was really great news indeed! They got to her an hour and a half late because a previous surgery ran over, but it was only about a 2 hour surgery all told. And yes, she's definitely relieved that she didn't have to keep the ventilator in all night. I swear though - I was really surprised how well she looked post-op. You couldn't even tell she had anything done! She was alert though a bit out of it due to the drugs and the anesthesia wearing off, but now she's getting some much-needed rest. One of us will have to call and talk her through this game, or there may be a couple nurses in ICU.

Marianne, I will pray for you to have the strength of the Lord as you move forward with this surgery. I'll even have The Princess put you on her prayer list too. As you prepare for this surgery, know that the Lord your God is with you and He will remain with you always.

I pray that the surgeons have quick hands, wisdom, and knowledge that will bring a quick surgery with no to minimal healing time. I pray that the Lord give your body a rapid response to the surgery and that you are healed quicker than the doctors can fathom.

Know that we love you and we will be praying for you. After we get to MD, I'll have The Princess give you a call!!!!

I talked to Marianne about a half-hour ago, and she continues to do well! She is being moved to another room because the floor she's on was too noisy and she couldn't sleep last night. It's a private room and floor, so she won't have to deal with that anymore. She says hello to everyone and hopes to be home on Sunday. Keep those thoughts and prayers coming!

Well, I just talked to Marianne, and there has been a monkeywrench thrown in the works by our wonderful friends, the insurance companies. :banging: She has been getting antibiotic treatment for various infections that they found during her surgery to remove the plate and mesh, including a pretty severe one that requires nurses to come in with gowns and masks when they need to work on her. She needs 5 more treatments, 3 of which they're going to give her today and the others at home. Well, of course the insurance company, either Medicare or Highmark, are refusing to foot the entire bill because she is close to her cap on Part D - $500 away, to be exact - and the treatments are $300 each. So they were going to pay the additional $500, and then leave Marianne with the bill for the rest! It was absolutely ridiculous. So the hospital contacted the insurance company and told them that either they arrange to pay for the treatments, or they were going to have to keep her there for another 5 days, which of course the insurance company didn't want to pay for either. So they agreed to cover all but $100 for the treatments, and Marianne is still stuck with a bill. Medical insurance companies are a joke, and they are probably the biggest reason why health care in this country is so screwed up. They want to make as much money as they can while paying as little benefits as possible, and to hell with the patients. Anyway, she is going to be home today, but it likely won't be until late this evening.

I'm baaaaaaack!:thumbsup::hug: Just got home about 1/2 hour or so ago.

God has always blessed me with the ability to heal pretty quickly and I actually feel better than I ever imagined I would only 5 days post-op! My docs totally rock and did a fantastic job! :drink: I don't have the raccoon eyes I had the last time I had my head carved like a pumpkin and when I woke up from the surgery, the ventilator was out! :applaudit: I remember the first thing I did when I opened my eyes was to put my hand to my mouth to see if the vent was in and was so relieved that it wasn't! I have 36 staples across the top of my head and have a PICC line inserted in my right arm above the elbow to get the antibiotic infusions from the home care nurse over the next 2 days. Eric already told you all about the insurance company BS. In a week or so, I should have a lot of my strength back and believe me - they're going to be hearing from me and it aint gonna be purty.

Presby is a great hospital and other than the bitch of a charge nurse on the first unit I was on, the staff was just awesome! She and I went round and round the 2nd night I was there because she tried to refuse me one of my regular meds that I noticed they hadn't given me. My roommate did nothing but snore loud enough to wake the dead and I hadn't slept in 2 days/nights so I told this charge nurse that I didn't care if they put me under a rock, a bridge, the hospital foundation - I wanted off that unit pronto because I needed to SLEEP!!!!! When I got transferred up to the 8D unit the following day, I was so pleasantly surprised that a couple of the nurses were still there from when I was a patient in that unit 7 years ago and it was a great reunion! They took excellent care of me though they knew from the last time I was there that I am pretty self-sufficient. Best nursing staff on the planet!

It's great to be home! I can't thank all of you enough for your prayers and well wishes - I am convinced that God heard your prayers and mine. You are very special people and I am so blessed to have your friendships! :drink::hug::hug:

HUGE thank you's to Gary for holding down the fort so well while I was out and to XT for being there and keeping you all updated!:hug: Thank you to all who I had the pleasure of speaking with on the phone - it was great to hear your voices and all of the encouragement you gave me! :drink::hug:

I will be on and off the board the next couple of days, as I have to rest and try not to overdo it. I have really missed this place and all of the truly wonderful people who are Steelers Fever!:tt03::tt02: See ya all soon!

The night of the game, I was a little over 24 hours post-op and was pretty tired from not being able to sleep the night before with all of the clatter on the floor, as well as my roommate's snoring and ass explosions into her bedside potty that sounded like grenades, but I was cheering them on! :tt02::tt::tt03:

As a matter of fact, I was just about standing on my bed screaming like the manager in Major League, but it wasn't because of the game - it was because of the bi tch of a charge nurse I had to deal with on that unit - LOL! :chuckle: If I had enough energy to have been able to lift my foot, she would have had my hospital slipper up her hiney. :chuckle:

I got the remainder of the staples removed from my head on Monday and I have to see my doc in January so that we can decide where to go from here. At some point, I have to have new mesh put back into my forehead where they removed the infected mesh, as it is too risky to leave that area unprotected. I'm being very careful not to bump my forehead and not to fall.

Other than that - I feel great!
