Bengals' tackle Collins is about to get trial by fire
With the offensive line decimated by injuries, the rookie tackle will likely get his first career start at Pittsburgh.

CINCINNATI Memo to Bengals rookie left offensive tackle Anthony Collins: Your time has come. And that time is now.

With a pair of starters in left tackle Levi Jones (leg) and left guard Andrew Whitworth (ankle) injured heading into a short work week and facing possible deactivation, all signs point to Collins getting his first career start at Pittsburgh on Thursday night, Nov. 20.

The Steelers have the NFL's top-ranked defense, boasting a No. 1 ranking in all three major categories total yards (237.6), passing yards (168.7) and rushing yards (68.9) allowed. The Bengals' offense? It's dead last at 242.6 yards a game.

"You can't pick and choose who you debut against," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "Guys make debuts all the time. There's no better debut than against the best. So there's no better time to do it than the present. If Anthony's our guy come Thursday night, he'll be up and ready to go, and excited about it."

Collins, a 6-foot-5, 317-pound fourth-round draft pick from Kansas, is a big, mobile, athletic blocker with the flexibility to play guard.

He must walk a fine line between staying patient and poised, and being rugged and aggressive, in an attempt to neutralize Steelers right outside linebacker James Harrison, who will blitz off the edge,

Collins must read Harrison's moves, get a good punch on him and ride him away from the pocket so quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has enough time to go through his progressions and deliver the ball.

Collins has played in three games this year in what's called the "Bigs Package." It's designed for short-yardage situations. He rotates in at left tackle, while Jones lines up at tight end next to right tackle Stacy Andrews.

"What Anthony has done for us this year, I've been very impressed with," Lewis said. "We have to make sure we do things that we feel good about to both run the ball better than we've done, and obviously to throw the ball.

"We'll have to make some adjustments. Some guys will have to step up and play. Some of our other players who are healthy have to play great. It's important that they pick up the slack."

Will be good to watch. I wanted Collins in the 3rd round and he was on the board when we picked Bruce Davis.

Collins and HIlls (or Carl Nicks) could have been a nice start at rebuilding a young O line. IMO.

Over/under on how many times Harrison is blatantly held with no flag?

I'm going 12

I guessing a 3 sack day, plus im sure they will try to block him with a running back which is not match for Harrison.

I don't know if it'll be that many. Pretty sure the NFL rule is that if you're blocking against the Steelers you are allowed to hook them around the neck with your arm and hold the opposite side Jersey everytime you are beat. So it technically shouldn't be a penalty...if you "block" that way against the Steelers only.

But if they use the same "holding" rules that apply to the rest of the league, then I'd simply say, take the total offensive passing situations the Bengals will be in for the entire game, then subtract 4 for sacks by Harrison and that's how many times he was held.

As I wrote in another thread, I say 3 sacks as well! Silverback is Defensive MVP, so far this season!

I also had the fortune to be at the game Sunday, and had great seats! (30 yd line, front row) After the game, the Steelers enter the stairwell to the locker room exactly where we were sitting. Got to yell congrats and slap hands with Silverback, Aaron Smith, Farrior, Spaeth, and Keisel!! :tt02:

I've got some video of it right before my batteries ran out. :banging: Seems the cold weather zapped them good. I can send the vids to someone who knows how to post them. Let me know.

And I fully expect the refs to either "not see it" or "ignore it"

?????

He must have been coasting a bit into the break. Still a solid force against the run and bull rushed well.
