Plenty of bad blood circulating around NFL

The image played out on a highlight film as Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott watched in rage, grinding his teeth into a fine powder. He knew what was coming. He saw Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Hines Ward peel back on the television screen. He saw Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers running in a full sprint, head turned away from an artillery shell headed in his direction. As Ward’s helmet connected with Rivers’ jaw – breaking it into three pieces – a sports anchor squealed gleefully.

Scott muttered an expletive. He looked at the hit, and saw only a coward.

“The media was like ‘Oh, Hines is tough,’ ” Scott said of the Oct. 19 hit. “No he’s not. He’s a cheap-shot artist.”

Of all the feuds raging in the NFL, this is as good as it gets. You talk to Scott, and he has no qualms about admitting his hatred for Ward and the Steelers. You talk to Ward, and he feels a certain satisfaction that he’s got linebackers hearing footsteps.

While the influx of money and fame has mellowed the warrior souls of some players, Scott has some news for the NFL suits: Legitimate hatred still exists in this league. Blood still boils. It might not be a selling point anymore on Park Avenue, but there are marked men. There are bounties.

So we called a few guys with axes to grind. And when Scott answered the phone, he didn’t waste any time airing his feelings:

“I hate everybody on every other team than mine. I don’t give a [expletive] about anybody on any other team – period. I don’t speak to them during the game. I’m not high-fiving guys. And I’m talking about guys who have been here and left, too. It doesn’t matter. You’re trying to take something away from me that I deem important. Why should I care about you? Why should I like you? You don’t have to like me, and I don’t have to like you.

“Ask me who I’m rooting for in the Super Bowl. If I’m not in it, I hope they cancel the damn thing.”

With those thoughts in mind, we came up with our top five feuds of 2008. And Scott’s beef took No. 1 with a bullet.

1. Bart Scott vs. Hines Ward

There is a special dark spot in Scott’s heart, and it’s filled with every nasty thing he wants to unleash on Ward. He never liked the Steelers receiver, but his furor intensified Nov. 2007, when Ward blew up Scott and safety Ed Reed on a pair of running plays. Both plays were legal by the letter of the NFL law, but both lit a fuse under Scott, who threatened to kill Ward late in that Ravens loss.

Since then – and despite various warnings from the NFL – Scott has continued a slow burn. He’s watched Ward light up several other players, including the jaw-shattering shot on Cincinnati’s Rivers, and dreamt of a day he could return the favor without a fine from the NFL.

“There’s nothing mano y mano about that,” Scott said of Ward’s penchant for peeling back and leveling defenders who aren’t looking. “You put him in a phone booth with half those guys that he’s taking those shots at, he’d get his ass whupped.

“If we’re going to play that way, let’s play that way. Let’s not play that way just when it benefits you, let’s play that way all the time. That means when Keith Rivers is defenseless and you take a shot and break his jaw, that means when you come across the middle and you’re defenseless, I get to take that shot. … That’s not man on man. That’s a cheap-shot artist. If you’re going to take a shot, that’s cool. But allow me to take mine without a $35,000 fine.”

Scott’s anger has added intensity to an already white-hot disdain between the two teams. A disgust that included linebacker Terrell Suggs at one point suggesting the team had a bounty on Ward and running back Rashard Mendenhall. The Ravens knocked out Mendenhall with a season-ending shoulder injury when the teams met in September. Suggs later recanted the notion of a bounty, but only after an NFL official met with him about it in Baltimore.

Asked about Suggs’ talk of a bounty, Scott replied, “Whatever Suggs said about Mendenhall or Hines or whoever, everything was done cleanly on our side. Mendenhall got put out the game legally. What he said about a bounty, I don’t understand why people deem that as something dirty.”

When you talk to Ward about it all, he gives only a Cheshire grin. It seems there is a certain sense of satisfaction to be gotten when other players are out there thinking about you.

“I’d be mad too if a 200-pound wideout knocked me out,” Ward said. “I’d get upset at that, too. He has every right to be upset. But a cheap shot? If that’s what he wants to call it, then I’m a cheap shot.

“Maybe they feel like their defense wants to bully everybody, and we’re not bullied by them. We know they’re going to hit us in the mouth and we’re going to hit back. And they don’t particularly like that.”

So by taking a shot on Ben from his blind side, and then making a giant production out of it in the media afterward by bragging about how he "took it easy " on Ben and how he could've really hurt him if he wanted to, does that make Scott a cheap shot artist too? I'm really getting tired of Scott's big mouth. I'm to the point now of hoping Ward breaks his jaw - maybe that'll shut him up for a while. Assclown.

My most hated Raven used to be Ray Lewis. But you know what, at least I have some respect for Ray Lewis as a football player (however no respect for Ray Lewis as a person).

For someone who has never done jack in the NFL, Bart Scott sure does love to run his c0cksucker.

Maybe he hasn't seen much of Hines Ward's career. He's taken plenty of those shots over the middle. He's taken cheap shots when he played special teams. Has he ever once complained about taking those hits? No.

So let me get this straigt Bart....when a defesive player hammers a QB blindside, that's just fine....when a receiver takes a shot over the middle (much like what Clark did to Welker) that's just fine.

But when Hines Ward does the exact same thing to your defensive buddies, it's cheap and not right?

Okay gotcha...you're a hypocrite and pansy.

I`m a second year NFL rookie but I`m afraid I`ve already developed quite a strong disliking to the Ravens.
They really seem like a bunch of thugs so it`s kinda ironic that they feel so aggreived towards Hines.
I don`t want to appear OTT but an air of malevolence seems to hang over the Ravens, especially Ray Lewis. He seems to specialise in hitting opponents when they`re on the floor and rarely gets penalised.
Anyway,Hines always give the football to a fan when he scores a TD,so in my book he`s a gentleman!
Here`s to the next Ravens game when Hines and the boys will do the talking on the field.:helmet:

It kills me with these defensive guys talking about the defensive players being - well defenseless. Seriously, if you don't want to take a shot then don't run after the RB or WR when they have the ball. Or better yet, sit your arse on the sidelines, carry the cord to the headphones or carry a clip board.

I'd bet everything I own that any defensive player worth their weight in salt would jack up an offensive player if there was an INT or a fumble return.

My three year old doesn't cry this much!!

What was it Ray Lewis once said about Joey Porter...

Oh yeah...

"what has Joey Porter every done in this league" he said that after Ray was on a SB winning team and Joey hadn't really been successful yet.

Now...I would say to Ray...turn to that piece of crap on your own team and ask him the same freaking question.

Bart Scott, what have YOU ever done in this league besides run your mouth and get JACKED UP!

EXACTLY! Isn't that what Hines said too? “Maybe they feel like their defense wants to bully everybody, and we’re not bullied by them. We know they’re going to hit us in the mouth and we’re going to hit back. And they don’t particularly like that.”

At this point I don't care about what Fart Skirt has to say, and it doesn't upset me, nor should it upset Hines and the Steelers.

Just another empty paper bag flowing in the wind.

LOL...i love the fact that this good for nothing sh!tbag keeps talking about Hines. As long as he's thinking about leveling him, we know he'll be blowing assignments.

Great job Ward!

Eff Bart Scott. Eff his momma who bore his bastard ass into this World. Eff his various baby momma's past, present and future. Eff his future parole officer. Eff his future defense attorney. Eff his future cell mate.

He's got a listed 57 tackles, which translates to about 20 for the season (and he was close to 32 other tackles at M&T). 1 sack. He's already a has been before he ever was. Most of his stats are padded by the statisticians in Baltimore. He's an overrated, overpaid, loudmouth thug punk who isn't fit to hold Ward's soiled jock strap.

Ok, maybe he's not that bad, but, good Lord, Scott IS a chump!

I used to respect the Ravens, on account that they won a super bowl on the strength of their D alone, and Ray Ray never had a bad word about Hines (that I can recall), but Bart Scott needs to realize that the Steelers are NOT intimidated by the Ravens, and he should just STFU.

Pendejo estupido.

But that would require Bart Scott to have a brain larger than the size of a pea. We all know that's not possible...so it ain't gonna happen.

He seems to think that the Baltimore Ravens have a history of being the intimidating defense of the NFL.

But his Ravens have only been around since 1996...and then they had the old Browns defense that wasn't nothin special.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense has been intimidating people since 1933. We may have not won a lot of games early on, but people left games with us battered and bruised.

Shit, just look at some of these names:

Mean Joe Greene, LC Greenwood, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Dwight White, Carnell Lake, Greg Lloyd, Joey Porter, Donnie Shell, Mel Blount, Rod Woodson, Mike Merriweather, Kevin Greene, Andy Russell, Ernie Stautner, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior, Casey Hampton, Jason Gildon, Levon Kirkland

That's a history of great, intimidating defense.

And someone outside of Baltimore to name a linebacker from the Ravens...the only person anyone can think of is Ray Lewis.

I decided to read the entire article, and if you follow the link and then go down the Defensive Players vs. NFL commish Roger Goodell you will get this gem:

Said Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott: “Sometimes people get hurt. Sometimes people have helmet-to-helmet contact. That’s football.”

Can anyone say HYP-O-CRITE?

wtf? I can't believe all the WHINERS that have come out of the wood works lately. Players, and fans! If Rivers wasn't going after the ball, smiles wouldn't've broke his jaw. Was Ward supposed to do, tackle him just enough? I really hope all this flag football crap going on right now is just a phase and is over as quickly as it came.

BTW.. How 'bout that hit Clark made :horror::crutches:

THATS football! i blame it on GOODELL and all his new pansy rules. that and the players are scared to death of loosing thier multimillion dollar a year carrears. to many guys are in the league for the money, not the love of the game and winning championships.

This guy is a complete hypocrite. He has no problems laying offensive players out, but doesn't like it when the tables are turned? Actually, that's not the definition of a hypocrite, that's the definition of a would-be-bully that's about to be exposed for the coward he really is.

Bart Scott

Been in the League since 2002

411 Tackles
16 sacks
3 ints

James Farrior
Been a Steelers since 2002
744 Tackles
23.5 Sacks
10 Ints

Bart can STFU. He's a nobody that happens to play on a very well coached defensive team who is doing nothing more than trying to make himself SOUND important because he is in the middle of a contract negotiation.
