PITTSBURGH — For the second straight year, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was recognized for his outstanding play by his teammates who voted him the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Harrison, who was named to his second straight Pro Bowl as a starter, broke the team’s single-season record for sacks this year by posting a career-high 16 sacks, breaking the 24-year old record of 15 by Mike Merriweather in 1984. Through 15 games, Harrison ranks fourth in the NFL with his 16 sacks and has a league-best seven forced fumbles. He has a career-high 100 tackles, which ranks third on the team, and has a team-best 34 quarterback pressures.

Harrison, a two-time GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week this season, earned the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week honors against the San Diego Chargers in Week 11 as he finished with one sack, one forced fumble, an interception (returned 33 yards) and five tackles in the Steelers’ 11-10 victory at Heinz Field.

Harrison is the first outright back-to-back winner of the team’s most valuable player since linebacker Levon Kirkland won the award in 1998-99. Harrison’s 2008 selection represents the 15th time a linebacker has been selected Steelers MVP since 1969.

im torn. on 1 hand i think harrison should be mfp of the entire league. if the refs called it straight up he'd be compared to lawrence taylor.

on the other hand, what troy has done this year has been amazing. he means so much to this team and him being healthy affects 10 other guys on the field.

lebeau can pretty much scheme with those 10 and let polamalu loose.

Much as our defense has been a real team effort this year, it couldn't go to anyone more deserving. Not a weak link on the entire field, but he downright changes the game.

It's funny with all the bitching that goes on about hijacking threads and you can't let one go without mentioning Ben. Since he is so f*ckin' great, why don't we change the English word "been" to "Ben". I mean, he's so deserving of it.:coffee:

There's no denying what Troy has meant to the defense. Him being healthy this year is definetly one of the reasons the D is #1, but Woodley, McFadden and the emergence of Timmons and Gay played a role also. There's no denying that S'back literally changed games for us this year.

I'm with hipcheese on this one. Though I agree Silverback had a tremendous season, I think BOTH he and Troy played outstandingly at their positions this season, were instrumental in our D's successes and should have been named Co-MVP's of the team. Just my cent and an arf.

Congrats to James Harrison. He has been a beast the past 2 years for us. Although having a healthy Troy again has made a big difference to this defense. James is earning himself a nice payday. Hopefully he will retire a Steeler and we can afford him.

Congrats to Harrison. What makes this truly a great story is how far he has come.

I still say its Troy

I love Harrison, he's a beat and is a great player, but Troy makes the entire defense better. When he's not on the field, its an obvious problem.

I agree but the same can be said for Harrison. We are blessed to have them both at the same time.

It is tough to choose between Harrison and Troy I think they should have given it to both of them they both deserved it.

Troy is have in a great year, but I still think Harrison is the one that drives our defense and the defense drives this team.

Congratulations James, well deserved.
