The Giants today signed tight end Matt Kranchick...

Kranchick, who played in four games earlier this season with Pittsburgh, was signed off the Steelers’ practice squad. A 6-7 and 260-pounder, he was the Steelers’ sixth-round draft choice in 2004 out of Penn State, the 194th overall selection. As a rookie, he played in two games, was inactive for 13 others and did not play in the season finale at Buffalo.

This season, Kranchick played in four games, including his first NFL start, versus Cleveland on Nov. 13. He had his first NFL reception in that game, a six-yarder. Kranchick also had two special teams tackles this season. In the preseason, he had six catches and three special teams tackles.

Kranchick bounced on and off Pittsburgh’s roster several times this season. He was waived on Oct. 24 and signed to the practice squad the following day. On Nov. 12, he was signed back to the active roster, then waived again a week later. Kranchick was re-signed to the roster on Nov. 22 and waived again the next day. He re-joined the practice squad on Nov. 25 and stayed there until the Giants signed him today.

Kranchick arrived at Penn State as a walk-on wide receiver. He added 45 pounds of muscle to his frame, was converted to tight end and played in 23 games, catching 24 passes for 352 yards and a touchdown. He had 22 of those receptions as a senior, including a 73-yard touchdown vs. Wisconsin. Kranchick graduated in 3? years with a degree in business administration.

Kranchick played at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania., where he was first-team All-Middle Atlantic County as a wide receiver and cornerback. In high school he had 75 catches for 1,125 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had seven interceptions as a senior.

Well that ends a long saga for Matt. That guy has been up and down around here for awhile now. Good Luck to him

Damn! Kranchick was starting to make a run on Brian St. Pierre's team record as far as how many times he had been signed and waived by the Steelers.

It appears that the Giants are stocking up for the playoffs.

They also signed ex-Patriots LB Roman Phifer - he is pretty old now but they obviously think he can bring something to the run D if they use him correctly.

I think this is too bad... I would have rather had them sign Tuman. He will probabaly be gone next season, and I liked the thought of Heath and Kranchick in there at the same time. Hopefully we can get him back...

We picked up a guy named Erik Jensen to replace Kranchick on the practice squad. He is 6-3 250 pound TE from Iowa. He was on the Rams roster last year but was injured, and he was in camp with the 49ers this year. Good luck to him...

Hope is a good TE. Look Forward to see how he develops as a Steeler.

you think he'll actually stay for more than one year or just a fill in for the time being?
