Being from the Coal Region of this Keystone State, he people around here take a lot of pride in our 1925 NFL Champion Pottsville Maroons! I live about 30 minutes away from where they used to play all those years ago. Our high schools have been Coal Region rivals for many years.
They had their title stripped due to politics raised with the NFL heads and the owner of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, their main rival. After being crowned champions, they played an exhibition game against the Four Horsemen and the Notre Dame All Stars which was held within the *territory* of the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets owner conspired with Commissioner Joe Carr to have the title stripped. The 1925 NFL championship was awarded to the the Chicago Cardinals who refused to claim it.
After being purchased by the Bidwell family, the Cardinals franchise then began to take credit for the 1925 title. There has been an alleged curse on the franchise because of this, which has led to their EXTREMELY limited success in the years since.
One of the few persons to openly speak out in the past for the reinstatement of the 1925 title to Pottsville has been our own late Arthur J. Rooney. Anyone else find it fitting that not only a PA team (well, THE PA team) is fighting for the honor of the Pottsville Maroons, but specifically one of the few to openly support their right to the title?
HERE WE GO STEELERS!!!!!! The Maroons will be watching from above! I for one will be wearing my Maroons T-Shirt under my jersey for Super Bowl Sunday!
