do you really see alex mack falling that far ??? not only that, but herman johnson going well before him??? from the scouting reports i've read from senior bowl practice, mack is kicking ass, and recieving tons of praise, while johnson, is being blasted, and getting beat like a rented mule....

Nice effort on the 3 round mock.

I honestly would cry tears of shame if it turned out this way though. If we wasted a pick on Harris when Moala, Britton, Robinson, Darius Butler, Mack, Canfield, Brace were on the board it would be a shame. He has had a bad week at Mobile Al and Tupou is probably a 3rd rounder

I also think you have Pat White and Herman Johnson a bit high in the 2nd round......and Troy Kropog has been getting beat like a rented mule all week in the Senior Bowl practices too.

Here is a review of Harris, Johnson and White and their performances in front of scouts this week. I think White has good arm strength, but accuracy is a problem and Johnson just looks terrible at either Guard or RT where he is practicing.

Sliders
Victor "Macho" Harris/CB/Virginia Tech: Harris has been anything but macho in Mobile and was consistently beaten in practice Wednesday. He plays very soft in coverage and gave up receptions down the field on a number of occasions.

Herman Johnson/OL/LSU: Johnson has lined up at both his natural position of guard as well as right tackle. His size (6-feet-7, 382 pounds) has not transitioned into the ability to dominate the opposition. Johnson's immobility is obvious to all and at one point he was knocked to the ground due to his inability to move. Much was expected from Johnson this week but he has not responded and his draft stock is plummeting.

Pat White/QB/West Virginia: Scouts wanted to give White a chance to prove he can play quarterback at the next level, but the early returns have not been positive. White struggled throwing the ball. White was not accurate, could not drive deep passes even though he was throwing with the wind; and at this point, he looks like a college signal caller who may be better off at a different position in the NFL.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/01/19/senior.bowl.day1/index.html

Rey Maualuga/LB/USC: Maualuga looked rusty today, both physically and mentally. He's not in the best of shape and was very hesitant to make decisions on the field. Maualuga seemed to get his bearings as the day proceeded, but his play was not reminiscent of a potential top-five pick.

No surprises here...and Lil Animal will not only be taken first, he'll also go in the top 10. As will Wells. And Jenkins will be in the mix as well.

As for the Steelers, why are we constantly mocked taking CB's with our #1? Ain't gonna happen this year, either...

# I heard Virginia Tech corner Macho Harris struggled earlier in the day in 1v1s, but I thought he had a very good practice today, making it as my defensive MVP. He picked off a few balls in red zone drills. Against Manuel Johnson, he was very instinctive in reading Johnson's routes as he allowed extremely little separation on outs and curls. He had a nice pass break up against Derrick Williams and displayed impressive anticipation.
must just be inconsistent....:noidea:

Awesome job to put up a complete 3 rounds at this stage of the season.

Some of my observations. (i guess your after feedback??)

* With Rex Ryan at the jets I cant see him going WR, WR then SS. He will want to build a fearsome D and one of the first 2 picks will be on D line or LB.

* The Browns or Bengals would pounce on Shonn Green in the second if he were available.

* Your New England draft scares me - Maybin OLB , Green RB , English DE and Cook SS. They would once again load up with those picks.

* The player you have most undervalued IMO is Ziggy Hood DT. I think someone will take him in the middle of the second. He is going to be a very good player in the NFL.

If the draft fell that way I would have the steelers going

#1 Eben Britton OT
( trading up in the second 2 spots to get)
#2 Alex Mack OG
# 3a Jarron GIlbert DE
#3b David Veikune, DE/OLB, ( Max Unger would be hard to pass on as well)

Once again huge effort - I continually struggle to settle on my first round mock let alone even think about putting together a three rounder. :drink:

That was day 1. I too saw White on day 2 practice and they were saying how he "spins" the ball well. As a pure QB I think White is a 5th round pick and he hasnt worked out as a WR to know what he potential is there.

a day 2 guy IMO.

Good job, except if the Steelers lose the SB they get pick #31. If the Steelers draft a CB with all those OL on the board it will be a drastic mistake

Aussie, I still have not seen Britton, but cant argue with wanting a LT in the 1st round. Trading up and being able to get Mack in the 2nd would be a steal. Veikune I love too and can only hope he is there and we have drafted O and D line already.

PLEASE............PASS ON MAX UNGER!! See if you can watch the reg season Cal vs Oregon game, or the Oregon bowl game (I think vs OSU). Both games Unger got pushed into the backfield.......a la Sean Mahan. In the bowl game vs OSU, they had a 265lb DT inside on him and Unger got stoned by him at the LOS. Then he shed Unger and tackled the RB for a loss on a pitch left. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFULL, for the alleged #1 center in the draft.

I would take Unger in the 4th round and think of him as a utility O lineman that can play all 4 positions on the line......but none of them extremely well .

Thats the only reason I would take him. He cant be worse than Trai Essex and some of the backups we have ( or wont have). I have Unger and Dallas Reynolds as the only utility guys that could be a backup who could cover multiple spots.

I have to admit - his gradings vary widely ( from 1st to 4th round talent)

1st off I agree with most of what you're saying.
2nd.... MACK is listed as a center and we will draft him as such! So there will be no need to look at Unger.
3rd, why would we take another hybrid in Veikune? Don't understand this at all....

If they cant or dont want to give Harrison the big dollars, then the hopes are pinned on Davis or Timmons to play OLB in 2010. I really dont know what we have in Davis as he didnt show much in preseason, hasnt had a sniff of playing special teams and could possibly be a bust.

Vekune is a bona fide pass rushing machine. He is a bit too small to play DE, but you never know if he can pick up coverage as a 3-4 OLB. Consider a guy that rushes the passer with the same kind of fury and intensity of Troy Polamalu.

I saw him beat Notre Dame's Sam Young with a bull rush, beat him with speed to the edge and put a double move on him that buckled his knees and made Young fall to the ground. He did the same double move this week and beat Michael Oher in Sr. Bowl practice. I really like the kid, but dont think he will last to the end of the 3rd and would grab him if he was there.

I would personally love to see DT/NT B.J. Raji would fall to the Steelers or maybe they could move up a few spots to get him. He has made C Alex Mack look like a child time after time during senior bowl practices, but of course he made pretty much all of the Centers look like that. Max Unger according to Mike Mayock and Kiper Jr can play 4 different positions on the offensive line, all but LT and that gives him alot of value to the Steelers if he last to their 1st pick.

Raji will be gone more that 20 picks before we start.

Raji did have a good last day against Mack, but Mack pretty much handled him till then, a lot of stalemates I thought, he was the only one that could handle him.

I would not take Unger with any of our 1st 4 picks.

Mayock himself asked the question "Can Unger anchor against the 3-4 nose tackle?" Can he handle a guy like Vince Wilfork or is he a zone block guy?"

Mayock also questions if Alex Mack is a zone block center......which I honestly think is absurd if Mayock watched him handle all the DT's he faced this season. In 1 on 1 drill at Mobile, Raji bull rushed him, pushed him back and then Mack got his feet reset and stoned him. 6'5" 312 lb Alex Mack is a strong kid and I hope the rest of the NFL drinks the Mayock kool-aid so he falls to us.........maybe even in the 2nd.

I am more and more thinking that Mack should be our first pick. I think you and I talked about him even having the versatility to move to Guard or have Hartwig move to Guard....

.....As of now, and by looking at the talent level per round...I am convinced that there will be another run on Tackles and we will go D-line in the 2nd.

I am torn. IF we sign a free agent LT then great!! If not, then we need to plan for the future and a guy like Britton or Beatty might be necessary, then look guard or Center in the 2nd.

The other alternative is to go D- line like Gilbert or Hood in the 2nd and then look later at a Guard in the 3rd and maybe a center like AQ Shipley. A decent LT prospect might not last until the late 2nd round for us. :noidea:

I doubt we will take a CB in the first round. William Gay has come into his own at the end of the season. Not sure how some people have Alex Mack as a first round lock and he barely gets picked up in the 2nd round.

Shonn Green RB from Iowa is gonna be a beast and would be a hell of a steeler. I guess we got the RB situation pretty locked up now. But he is a powerhouse.

I like the FA Tackle signing also. We need a Veteran to anchor that line.

We need a solid kick returner or punt returner also. However he needs to be more than a special team player. We wont waste a roster spot on a return specialist. (Willie Reid, Drummond, Blackwell) No offense to Mewelde or Gary they never made huge plays but they held onto the ball and thats 80 percent of the battle.

Hilight videos are just that. Hilights. You never see a guys faults in those.

I watched Mack a few times this season, recorded the games and rewound them to see how he plays. He is suspect to getting too far forward in pass blocking and letting a guy slip around him. He is not light on his feet and sometimes misses guys at the 2nd level and dives at their feet.

But.....when Mack locks on, he blocks like a warrior and finishes his defender off. Even in pass blocking when a guy gets him on his heels, he has this little back hop to get leverage and just shuts down the rusher. I like him and he is the real deal for the Steelers type of game. Now, if we were the Broncos, Colts, Redskins, Texans.....they would want Max Unger or Andre Caldwell who have better feet.
