Here's a guarantee for you: Steelers safety Anthony Smith won't be predicting the outcome of Super Bowl XLIII.

Smith has more important things to do, like preparing for the big game although the chances of him playing against the Arizona Cardinals on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Fla., appear to be next to none.

A year after making headlines for what he said instead of what he did on the field, Smith is still trying to find his place in the NFL.

He's left wondering if he will even be allowed to dress, much less play in the most important game of his life. After being active for 14 regular-season games, Smith was inactive for both playoff games.

"I've been down the last two weeks. Hopefully, I get to finish the season out strong," Smith said. "You just want to be a part of it, help contribute. Being inactive, you really can't do that. You don't feel like you did anything."

That's a big comedown from the lofty expectations Smith set for himself after starting 10 games and recording a career-high 74 tackles to go along with two interceptions in 2007.

"To compete for a starting job like I did last year, and hopefully win it. I believe I can be a starting safety in the NFL," Smith said of his goals for his third pro season. "That didn't happen."

Smith was asked if his so-called "guarantee" made before last year's game against New England contributed to him going from starter to standing on the sideline in street clothes.

Not only did the Steelers lose to the Patriots, 34-13, Smith, who was starting for the injured Ryan Clark, was targeted by quarterback Tom Brady and victimized for two touchdowns.

"That game was more me not making plays," Smith said.

Clark reclaimed the free safety job upon his return to the lineup this season. And in the two games that Clark missed because of injuries, it was veteran Tyrone Carter, not Smith, who started. Smith played little all season and made only five tackles.

"I don't know if it was or wasn't. I don't know what they're thinking. Nothing was really been said, just the events that took place," Smith said. "I got pulled from the starting lineup, and I didn't get to play in the playoff game (against Jacksonville). The actions pretty much speak for themselves."

As for being inactive for two playoff games after being active for most of this season, Smith replied, "Right now, I guess it's a numbers game. It's a numbers game, or whatever, as coach told me."

Smith, who will be a restricted free agent after the Super Bowl, has concerns about his future, at least how it pertains to the Steelers.

"They have first rights to me. I'll probably be here," said Smith, a third-round draft pick in 2006. "If they let me go ... I would like to stay here. But to come back next year, I just want an opportunity to compete for that starting job."

Nothing more or less. Guarantees, Smith will tell you, are for suckers.

I had high hopes for this guy . looked good ,fast , hard hitting . ( need to be schooled on how to be a Steeler ) did some dumb stuff to get him self benched frist and now not even dressing for games . maybe we can keep him for low $$$ and will turn out ok ..

He looked okay physically before the NE game. Then he decided to be stupid and his play suffered because he was too busy trying to light people up.

He had a lot of potential to play in the best defense in the NFL, but his big mouth and his inability to contribute has hurt him. I don't see him supplanting Clark's spot.

If he could play special teams - he's young, fast, and obviously likes to hit - that'd be a great first step, but Madison, Fox, etc. have done a real good job.

He lacks the most important quality you need to play in a Dick Le Beau defense - discipline. His whole system is based upon everybody being and staying where they are suppossed to be. Unless you show the understanding of the defense and the self-discipline to play it you will be of no use to coach Le Beau, regardless of your ability to light someone up from time to time. Look what happened to Harrison when he first got to Pittsburgh. He used to actually stop in the middle of plays because he didn't know what he was doing. The difference is that Harrison kept working at it until it finally clicked. Sad to say that Anthony seems to have actually regressed.

yea.. looked at what happened to harrison.. it took him his whole career til last yr to get a starting job.. if u are trying to base anything off of what harrison had trouble with and what is happening now.. u can't base shit off of smith's 3 yrs in the league.. if u want 2 compare his situation with harrison's..

I disagee lilyoder6. Harrison may have been lost and has his career in doubt, but by all accounts he kept on getting better. That is evidenced by the fact that the Steelers kept brining him back. And he did contrubute to the team long before last season as special teams player, back-up linebacker and Cleveland fan planter. He was just playing behind Peezy. I'll repeat Smith just seems to be going backwards in his development. Of, course, I hope he does turn it around, but i have my doubts.

he was getting so much better that he was getting cut and cut and cut and cut again.. 1 being from the ravens

and anthony smith b4 being inactive was playing good on special teams..
the only difference between the 2 is that smith hasn't been cut yet and harrison as when comparing the yrs so far..

and smith is playing behind clark..

No he is playing behind Clark and Carter.

Look, as I said, I hope he makes it. But, when you go from being one injury away from starting, to playing just special teams, to not even dressing, it doesn't look good.

Well it is sad he has alot of potential! I think for whatever reason last years * game broke him mentally. I hope he does get signed by us and turns things around! But if not i wish him the best of luck. It sounds like he wants to be here :noidea:

well getting into the post-season.. it gets down to numbers.. would u want a 4th safety or another wr? it just depends on how many u have and may think u need at a pos...

i would like him to make it.. but all i am saying is that u can't compare him and harrison.. b/c harrison was far worse than smith is at this time of his career

I remember so well when he showboated after making a big play...... LeBeau was about as fired up as I'd seen him in years, and the kid blew him off on the sideline. I never looked at him favorably after that.

i think he will make it somewhere in the nfl if not with the steelers.. he showed too much potential in his first 2 years for him not to have a future..

unfortunately for him clark is all-around better and compliments troy much better than smith would.. you can't have two roaming free spirits at safety, thats why hope and clark played so well along troy.. they held their ground, played smart, and let troy roam the field.

The kid is a player. Maybe this experience helps him grow up as a man and learn his craft.

He peeks in the backfield too much as a FS and unfortunately is behind Troy as a SS. I'd rather see him moved to SS and backup Troy or get in on dime.....then see Mundy be the backup FS.

At this point, for this game, I am more comfortable with Carter as the back-up. Sure, he is not that athletic, but he knows what is expeted of him and where to be.

As much as I would love to keep Smith on the team, I just have a feeling that with Tomlin here he won't get that chance. No question he has talent, but he has a ways to go with getting the mental part down playing FS in the NFL.

Come on guys. Watch the interview. Ed Bullshit drug that prediction out of him and Smith never had a chance. If he had said NO I am not saying we win, we would have been all over him. He was ASKED by Bullshit is that a guarentee? What would you have said about your team? And remember what set up the setup was Smith said, If IF IF we do what we need to do I believe we win the game, Bullshit then drug the guarentee out of him. SO shoot ed bullshit, now Smith.

The bottom line is he's just not as good as Clark and Carter. I am suprised to see him inactive though becuase he's made some nice plays on special teams. Apparently he's the odd man out on the special teams unit
