Packers hire ex-Steeler Greene to coach linebackers
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
Jan. 26, 2009 2:10 p.m.

Tampa -- The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with one of defensive coordinator Dom Capers' most productive players to join their staff.

Former Pittsburgh and Carolina outside linebacker Kevin Greene has been hired to coach the outside linebackers, a club source said. No contract has been signed yet but the club is expected to announce his addition in the next week or so.

Greene, who led the NFL in sacks in 1994 with the Steelers and 1996 with the Panthers, has mostly been out of football since his career ended, but he has worked six summer coaching internships while maintaining a career in business. A dynamic and outgoing personality, Greene was a staple of Capers' 3-4 defensive scheme.

Coach Mike McCarthy and Capers both felt Greene would be able to teach the team's outside linebackers the new scheme.

With Greene's hiring, assistant head coach Winston Moss' title will now be inside linebackers coach.

thanks to greene for the help he provided harrison and woodley during camp. glad its payd off for him.

now if he could only quit getting snubbed for the pro bowl. :dang:

Hmm....now that's a good move by the packers. I was skeptical about their move to the 3-4, but this may move just be what they needed

he did a great job the past offseason with woodley and james too

congrats Greene!!

Congrats to him. He will make a great coach. The Packers need a Olb and they should be fine.

Where is AJ Hawk, still in the middle of the 3-4? Greene will help them for sure, he's a serious guy and really understands the scheme for the defense.

the pack has plenty of wide bodies for NT.....i'd think they'd try to use harrell as a DE....

That wouldve been awesome seeing KG on out coaching staff.

Harrell is most definitely a DE. I see the packers drafting a DT in the 1st round next season

They can do with their linebackers for now, but if they truly want to fix that run D they gotta start in the trenches

Absolutely. . . I also wonder about Bettis as a RB coach.

Hawk and Barnett will be middle Linebackers , thats a hell of a duo. Kampman will be an OLB, he is a guy with both speed and power, and I dont know who the other guy is. Good move by McCarthy though.

Well, this will damn sure help them transition to the 3-4. He helped Woodley out a lot with only like a week with him in TC.

oops - sorry mods. I'm the NEW guy... I'll be sure to read ALL the posts before starting a new thread.

(Referring to the thread I started today about this... which is a day late and a dollar short).

I still say - Good for him!

I wish him luck. He was one heck of a player for us and I'm sure he can teach the yung'ens a thing or two about playing linebacker in the NFL.
