Here is what I put out beside my cubicle at work to assist all the bandwagon jumpers that, having never before worn Cardinals gear or professed to ever having liked the team, began taunting me the week before the Super Bowl wearing their brand new Cardinal shirts, hats, sporting their brand new car flags that I am suddenly not seeing anymore, and crowing their sudden passionate love for "their" team.
One coward in my group, sported two spanking new tee shirts last week, even took Monday off rather than face me, even after he told a coworker that he hoped the Cardinals won just so he could come to work and rub it in my face. This is the kind of fandom we unfortunately have to deal with more often than not here in Arizona. I have other friends who won't wear the colors of their teams because they get taunted so badly here. Luckily as a Steelers fan, these idiots don't have much ammunition for me.
The true die hard Cardinal fans I know all received my respect before the game, and sincere congrats after the game for a great effort. As true knowledgeable football fans, this small group of good folks congratulated me accordingly Sunday night and Monday, still wearing their old ragged faded jerseys and hats I'm sure as they cooked off bad hangovers.
It was hard for me to not hate this team before Coach Wis came along, the way the Bidwills made empty promises, drafted poorly, and signed has-been players and coaches in a feeble attempt to pander to the fans here. I still had to have a bit of animosity towards them, at least until I was satisfied that those idiots criticizing the choice of Tomlin over Wis and Grimm were silenced for good.
But the team showed such class and played so hard in these playoffs. I don't know how they turned it on in the playoffs like they did, but to do it four games in a row doesn't seem like a fluke to me. Seeing Fitz turn into a super star before our eyes....and most impressively, team officials turning down the parade that both Phoenix and Glendale both offered them (this town LOVES giving parades to teams that lose)...well I've got at least a healthy respect for the Cardinals. And may even root for them a bit more than I used to.
So here's my salute to the bandwagon fans. Remember, all your donations are tax deductible...
