View Full Version : Steelers sign CFL RB Stefan Logan

Dominique Dorsey will not be the only former CFL star plying his trade south of the border next season as BC Lions running back Stefan Logan has signed with the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

"When I tried out in January they said they wanted to sign me then but we'd have to do it after the Super Bowl," Logan told TSN.

The two-year contract with the Steelers will be signed on Friday, however there is no significant signing bonus, a fact that did not bother the South Dakota product.

"I'm not worried about that," Logan told TSN. "They told me I had a good opportunity to make the team as a starting kick and punt returner and as a third down back."

Logan should be able to fit in to the Steelers plans immediately. The team's lack of a reliable third-down back was exposed in the Super Bowl when the Steelers decided to kick a field goal on the first series of the game, rather than go for it on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line.

The chance to play in the NFL was too good to pass up for the 27-year old Logan, especially when he can be a part of a championship club.

"In life you have to take the opportunity when it comes. This is a chance to be closer to my family too. I'm just gonna roll the dice and see how it goes," Logan told TSN.

Lions general manager and head coach discussed the situation with Vancouver radio station CKNW on Thursday.

"We are disappointed for ourselves and our fans because Stefan is a very exciting football player and somebody that we were counting on to be a big part of our football team," Buono told CKNW.

"But this is part of our agreement (with the NFL) that we all have to deal with. The good thing at this point is that we have a lot of time during to the off-season to work on finding the next Stefan Logan."

Logan enjoyed a breakout campaign in his first year in the CFL as he was among the league leaders in rushing yards with 889 yards on just 122 carries. He also caught 52 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns.

Although Buono was not happy to lose Logan, he believes that they can replace him from within.

"We had two good backs (Ian Smart being the other) and now the plan is to bring in another two or three more to compete for the job," Buono told TSN in an interview.

Buono also reiterated the fact that the signing does not necessarily signify the end of Logan's CFL career.

"Just because he has signed doesn't mean he has made the team," Buono told TSN.

Similarly, Logan is not ready to cut ties with the Lions either.

"I'm still going to keep a close eye on the Lions and see how they're doing. Neil (McEvoy, player personnel director) said that if it didn't work out they would welcome me back"

Buono does understand the lure of the NFL and does not begrudge Logan for taking his shot.

"It's a great opportunity for him with what (San Diego Chargers running back Darren) Sproles did," Buono told CKNW. "Guys like Dominique Dorsey and Stefan Logan will obviously get a much better look."

I agree.

I was hoping the Steelers would have given Dominique Dorsey a shot for kick and punt return duties. He was one of the best in the CFL in those duties over the past few seasons.

You are on to something there. Remember we had Justin Vincent on then PS also. And Mendy is coming nack. I think this is more of a returnman kinda situation. Now if we would sign a proper FB I would be happy.

I like the signing. It can't hurt us....

Here's what I found:

Logan is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. He has scored as a runner, receiver, punt returner and kick returner in college. He has excellent speed and quickness, and shows the ability to hit top gear very quickly. Once he gets a step on you, he is not going to be caught. He has developed into a quality receiver out of the backfield over his career as well. Logan has the talent to become an excellent 3rd down back and return specialist.

Looks like Miami signed him in 2007 and then cut him.

His stats last year with BC:

Rushing: 122 (carries), 889 yds, 7.3 avg, 66 yd long, 0 TD
Receiving: 52 (catches), 477 yds, 9.2 avg, 31 long, 3 TD

He is a Sproles kind of player. Was the all time leading rusher at Univ. of South Dakota and 6th in NCAA all purpose yardage all time.

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Former Coyote legend Stefan Logan has signed a two-year contract with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Logan, who is the all-time leading rusher at The University of South Dakota, will begin preseason workouts with the team on May 28 and is expected to compete for playing time at running back as well as punt and kick returner.

“I feel great to have this opportunity to play in the CFL,” said Logan. “A lot of people look down or don’t know about the CFL, but it is a really good league with some good competition. I just can’t wait to get out there and represent USD.”

In his four-year career at USD, Logan (2003-06) compiled one of the greatest offensive careers in school history. He holds the Coyote career record for all purpose yards and rushing yards. He finished his career with 8,459 all purpose yards and he had 5,958 rushing yards. In fact, his 5,958 career rushing yards alone rank him first in career all purpose yards. During his career he scored 35 touchdowns, which is the third highest total in school history.

Logan also placed his name in the NCAA and NCC record books. He is sixth in career all purpose yards in NCAA Division II and is 11th in career rushing yards. Logan is also the only player in the history of the NCC to rush for 1,000 yards in four-straight seasons.

The BC Lions will open the CFL season on Thursday, June 26 at Calgary.

Here is another article. His nickname is "joystick".

Logan natural carrier of the pigskin
Gordon McIntyre, Canwest News Service
Published: Tuesday, August 19, 2008

VANCOUVER - He's bagged groceries, worked with corpses and one day hopes to be a cop, but perhaps Stefan Logan should think about becoming a spokesman for the SPCA or PETA, having carried a pigskin as a Coyote, a Dolphin and now a Lion.

"Now that you mention it, yeah, all my teams have been named after animals," the 28-year-old B.C. Lions tailback nicknamed Joystick said Tuesday.

"It just shows that I'm an animal, a warrior, that I'm going to play hard and do everything I've got to do for my team when I'm out there."

Despite a lingering high-ankle sprain suffered on Aug. 8, an injury that's recurred since college and which he's always played through, Logan will be out there on Friday when the Calgary Stampeders visit BC Place Stadium, relegating Joe Smith to the sidelines again.

"I'm going to fight through the pain, keep striving to be the best," Logan said.

Smith is handling his relegation graciously. He and Logan don't hang out off the field, but they discuss plays during practice and talk about stuff outside of football, like family and life in general.

"Football is a business," Logan said. "We know we're both fighting for the same position, but you've got to be a man about it."

Before Logan became a record-smashing, all-America back with the University of South Dakota Coyotes in the Div. II North Central Conference, he took five years off from football, working at Publix, a grocery chain in the U.S. From there he became a mortician's helper with his dad Michael at the University of Miami medical school. Preparing corpses for research was a job that at first creeped him out, but evolved into a task he enjoyed.

"It was a time of life when I was just lost," said Logan, who played only one year of high school ball. "I didn't know where to go, I didn't know where to start. It was like, 'What do I do now?' "

After talking to his dad, Logan put highlight tapes together and sent them to several schools, settling on the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, a place about as different from the tough Miami suburb of Opa-Locka where he grew up as was possible without leaving the U.S.

His exploits with the Coyotes led to a spot on the Miami Dolphins' practice roster before he was released and signed by the CFL's Lions.

The five-foot-six, 181-pound shifty speedster had done his homework before arriving at camp in Abbotsford, B.C. He knew he was taking on CFL all-stars in Smith and return specialist Ian Smart.

"I was telling my boy and my girlfriend and my mom back home, 'I've got my hands full here, I'm backing up two of the best in the league.' "

For now, he's not backing up Smith.

Michael Logan, meanwhile, is battling a serious kidney problem and has been off work for two months.

"He's very sick, but he doesn't want me to be concerned. I might have to fly home, but not yet.

"I told him, 'Just keep taking your medicine, rest and get better.' "

This kid is no Davis. We will get another FB to replace him. Essentially, if Logan can make the squad......he will be a KR/PR specialist. The RB depth will be Parker, Mendenhall, Moore and a rookie FB.

Here is a video of a CFL game. Logan is about 2:45 into it with a nice run. Former Broncos QB Jarius Jackson is the QB, playing against former Boise St. QB-Ryan Dinwiddie.

Even though we just won a superbowl we still havent completed our team.

Still have to fix our O-Line Which I hope we get through the draft

Need Depth on Our D-line

and our return game sucks, I think we are the only team in the NFL that have 2 FullBacks Kick returners.

So this kid may add a little lightening to a an area of the game we are horrible at. SPECIAL TEAMS.

Imagine a Devin Hester type player on PR/KR. And we can start our drives on their 40 yard line.

Lions: Steelers steal running back Stefan Logan
http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Lions+Steelers+steal+running+back+Stefan+Logan/1257767/story.html
By Mike Beamish, Vancouver SunFebruary 6, 2009 1:01

'They told me I had a good opportunity to make the team as a starting kick and punt returner and as a third down back,' B.C. Lions running back Stefan Logan says of signing with the National Football League champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

VANCOUVER — Toronto Argonauts, a team which finished 4-14 last season and missed the playoffs, have lost four players to the National Football League.

And Wally Buono, coach and the general manager of the 11-7 B.C. Lions, saw his third starter go out the door Thursday.

Do you think NFL teams are beginning to notice the CFL has talent? The latest Lion to start running down his NFL dream is running back Stefan Logan, who will sign a two-year contract with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers today. He joins defensive end Cameron

Wake and linebacker Jamall Johnson who earlier reached deals with the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, respectively.

“For sure, I’ll be competing for a spot on specials teams as a kick and punt returner,” Logan told The Vancouver Sun from his home in Miami. “I’d like to think they can use me as a third-down back, too. The important thing is to get on the field, and do something when the ball is in my hands.”

“Joystick,” the nickname Lions players bestowed on Logan last season, has a habit of getting upfield so fast that he’s gone before it registers. “There are times when you don’t even have to block for him,” Lions left tackle Rob Murphy said in November. “They can’t catch him. He’s special.”

Buono knows that, too. The loss of Logan’s sublime package of running skills is significant. Running back is usually one of the easiest positions to fill since there are hundreds of prospects coming out of U.S. colleges looking for a place to play. That said, Logan is unique.

Last season, Buono called him the CFL’s “most exciting player.”

It’s quite a statement — one that wouldn’t get an argument from anyone — and all the more remarkable because the 27-year-old rookie didn’t score a rushing touchdown last season. He picked up 889 yards on just 122 carries and caught 52 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns.

“Yes, when you look at running backs, that body type is not difficult to find,” Buono acknowledged. “When you look at the bowl games in college, there is a very good supply available. But guys like Stefan are more difficult to find. You rationalize his loss by saying to yourself, ‘There’s another one out there, and we’ve got to find him.’”

Logan said he worked out for the Steelers in mid-January. He had another tryout lined up with the Carolina Panthers and a third NFL team whose name he declined to disclose. But when the Steelers wanted him to sign, he cancelled his other arrangements and agreed to join Pittsburgh.

“It’s one of those deals you have to take and run with it. That’s what I’m going to do,” Logan said. “I hope all the fans of the B.C . Lions, the players, coaches and the people of Vancouver will hopefully have a great and successful season. I’ll be cheering for them. I hope they’ll be cheering for me.”

He didn’t receive a signing bonus, however, so the Steelers aren’t losing much by giving Logan a chance at training camp.

The Lions, who retain his CFL rights, could get him again on the rebound, if he’s released. They just don’t know.

“Yes, it’s disappoining to see a guy like Stefan go,” Buono said. “He was going to be a big part of what we did. But the point is, it’s hard to begrudge the guy his opportunity.”

Buono is hoping to continue contract discussions with offensive tackle Jason Jimenez, who was scheduled to be worked out Thursday in Tampa by the Buccaneers. While he isn’t expecting a fourth Lion to bolt to the NFL, Buono admits he’s prepared for anything.

“That’s what makes the job exciting — and tougher,” says the GM. “The excitement is in finding the next guy. Training camp is going to be a lot more exciting this year.”

Or anxious — if another Stefan Logan doesn’t appear on the horizon by the start of camp.

If I had to throw a dart, I would say that the rooney's don't want holmes getting busted up as a return man, now that he's coming alive as a receiver.

That's definitely a part of it. Toss in the fact that Holmes has had more fumbled returns than good returns... As far as roster goes, let's wait and see if the guy even makes the cut in training camp before we see who's spot he's taking. You've got to trust the coaches that if they are giving somebody a spot and cutting another player, it's because the player they are keeping has something the other guy doesn't. It's interesting to watch and debate, but at the end of the day the guys upstairs and on the field know a hell of alot better what they're doing than we do.

I like Mewelde, and am extremely pleased with the way he came on for us in the Baltimore game, and the production he brought to the table in the middle of the season. He proved in that Baltimore game that he was a gamer. However, there are reasons why he was so far down the depth chart to begin with. My bet is that he's not in the Black & Gold next season. Davis may or may not be. I would like to see what McHugh could do from the fullback position as opposed to TE.

Could mean they are looking at trading Mewelde Moore. Or, trading FWP and leaving Mendenhall, Moore, Logan as the rb depth.

Honestly, if the kid makes it, he will be a KP/PR specialist like Allen Rossum was and in 2010 when Parker probably leaves, it will be Mendenhall, Moore, Logan and a rookie draft pick.

Anybody that can return the ball would be great. Russel and Davis are both big guys and i assume the thought process would be that they would just run people over but that doesnt work when you have 4 or 5 guys trying to tackle them. Its clearly proven in the NFL that successful return men are quick and small. If logan can be that guy it would be a huge advantage seeing as how i dont remember the last time we had a decent return guy.

He definately would garner some interest, but I think the Steelers will let him play out his contract next season and that is why they drafted Mendenhall. After next season Parker will be 30 and looking for his 3rd contract......I think next season will be his last in B&G.

Logan is just a possible KR and future planning.

I think when you go on IR, then you are no longer part of the active roster. So Batch, Retofsky, Sepulvada were not part of the 53 man roster. If we get Chris Canty, we can wave bye to Orpheus Roye and Travis Kirschke to make room for a KR specialist and still have 6 d linemen on the roster.

This sounds to me (since it was a 2 year contract, and Memo signed a 3) that they are looking at possibly bundling up a RB as trade bait. And my guess is that it's FWP.

And that makes me start thinking they already know they don't want to pick #32 in the draft. Which leads me to believe that they have a VERY specific player in mind.

And if they are thinking aboiut dangling their STARTING RB, coming off a SB year as well as a guy who was leading the league in rushing most of '07, that means to me they might even be thinking top 10.

Who will be sitting in the top 10 (won't be a LB, QB, TE, RB or WR) come April that would fill a need for the Steelers?

I know this is a ton of speculation, but isn't that what the offseason is all about?

Let's see we got Parker, Mendenhall(unless the ratbirds decide to get cheap again) Moore and Russell. Yep we truly need another RB. I want to know which RB they're going to draft this year.

@ 3:20 he has a play near the goal line with a sweet move.

@ 4 min mark he catches a ball for a TD

I loves me some CFL football!!!!! I think if he makes it as a 3rd down back we will see MeMo traded. I really do think we are getting ahead of ourselves with this one. Hell for all we know he could be cut before camp starts.

I saw pretty much every home game of Stefan's while he was at USD. He's shifty as hell and could be a great return guy. Don't see what he could do in the backfield the others can't do better but he could be very good on special teams. He was alot of fun watch while he was here.

Nice vid. He looks shifty and quick as hell. Definitely worth a look. We havent had a good KR since Rossum, and before Rossum I cant think of a good one since Louis Lipps. Unless im forgetting someone.

ok. i wasnt sure about that. you think they would really let travis go?

Next year will be Kirschke's 13th NFL season. I actually like him better than Eason, but Eason is 6 years younger. I could handle a D line rotation of Smith, Keisel, Canty, Eason at DE and Hampton-Hoke at NT.

We only need 6 D linemen, not 7 so a KR specialist like Logan might be a possibility.

Getting rid of MeMo would be a huge mistake. He has proven he can step in and get you a full days work of 100 yards rushing and is a great reciever out of the backfield. If Parker gets hurt again you are left with an UNPROVEN Mendenhall, an unproven as a featured back in Russell and this new scatback Logan.

I think there's a very good possibility that we'll be dealing a RB this offseason. I'm not a big fan of Davis--McHugh is a better blocker--but Arians seems to like him.

Steelers sign Stefan "Joystick" Logan

Lions: Steelers steal running back Stefan Logan
By Mike Beamish, Vancouver SunFebruary 6, 2009Comments (8)

I am happy they realize Russel is not the answer on KR's. He is no threat to run one back.

Who was the guy at Boisie St before Dinwiddie. He could sling it too, but was too small for the NFL. Was it Bart Hendricks or something like that?

Not certain if this is appropriate to post here, however I heard there is a possibility the Steelers are looking to sign a RB from the CFL. Anyone hear naything along these lines? Thanks-
