View Full Version : Picking the Playoffs

SteelerDan43

Since there wasnt much of a respone in the Fantasy section it was suggested to move it to the General NFL section. So here it is.

So since we had so many people pick the Major Bowls I though we could do the same with the playoffs. Just doing by round and with total points.

Here are my picks so you can get an idea

NFC

Washington @ Tampa Bay - Washington (49 pts)

Carolina @ NY Giants - NY Giants (55 pts)

AFC

Jacksonville @ New England - New England (35 pts)

Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati - Pittsburgh (48 pts)

So the overall standings would be by record first then by adding all the point differences together and the closest to zero.

Now if Livinginthe Past wants to repost his picks (by the way you didnt pick a team in the Pitt. game) here a Mod can delete the other thread.

Picking the NFC is like throwing darts blindfolded. Washington won after rolling up what may be the worst all-time playoff offensive numbers for a winning team, 120 yards.

God, the NFC sucks...

So so far Brady12 is the only undefeated and Koopa is the only one to pick an exact score.
Livinginthe Past has the best Pt. differential (19), and BIGBENFASTWILLIE has the worst (60). But no one has pulled an 0-fer so everyone is still in it.

well atleast im not just waiting for the over under lines to make my point total picks. i thought using an arbitrary number like 35 on all 4 games just to see how that strategy plays out. but just guessing is more fun. im leaning towards 48 for the steelers game. and its been raining in seattle for 24 days but only several games have been affected by rain in their new stadium. im betting that it clears up.

Just some observations of things I'm noticing looking at the results so far...

The NFC is just a crap shoot... As a group in the NFC we are 22-14 while in the AFC we are 28-8. Take Seattle (all right) out and the record goes down to 13-14 a .481 percentage... not good.

Disregarding the Steelers games we are overall we are 35-19 a .648 average. Pretty damn good for actual non-biased picks.

The majority has been right 7 out of 8 times, the one exception was the Giants who screwed us all over by more or less not even showing up to play the game. Once again pretty damn good.

We are not very good at pickin point totals. The best so far is 84 points, an average of 10.5 ppg. The worst is 133 points, an average of 16.6 ppg. The overall average is 13.04 ppg. So we are off by just under two TD's a game while the average game has had 34.75 points scored, just under 5 TD's a game. So that comes out to us as a group being off the mark by 40 percent of the total score... Not real good but to be expected as the games are so fickle as far as the final score goes.

P.S. Would anyone be interested in doing something very similar to this next year for the regular season (with some changes)?

Ha Ha you can see the engineer comming out in me...

tony hipchest
01-18-2006, 01:02 PM
some things i noticed looking at my own record:

never bet on the less experienced playoff qb especially if theyre making their 1st playoff start.

i havent been following the over/under lines but im almost positive that if you bet the under for evey game you won 7 out of 8 times. it is true. defense picks it up in the post season.

being way off on the totals of 2 games has killed me when i was pretty much picking within a td of all the others.

Thats some nice analysis Dan.

Its always nice to look at the facts and figures bubbling just below the surface - im sure there are some pretty good indicators out there that will help me predict football matches in the future...I just dont know what they are yet.

Count me in for the season long version - in the offseason you could give us your proposals and we could all throw some ideas into the ring.

come on we know you patfans are pulling for the seahawks to keep bradys little record of being the youngest to win a sb intact. God forbid if ben take away one of BRADYS records. then again if he can start taking them away from marino, i guess he can set his sights on tom too!

I can honestly say I dont care about the youngest QB record - what matters is that Brady won a SB in his first playing season with a team that was less than spectacularly talented.

Ben would have to go some way to match that game winning drive - when all the 'experts' were saying to go for O.T.!

You should also know better than to group Patriots fans in one lump - a faulty theory proved out on this forum every day recently.

pittsburgh 29-17= 46

during their 7 game winning streak they average 29 pts and are giving up about 17. generic? yes.

will reed set a record with 5 fg???????

(the over under is 47 pts. and the trend in this years playoffs is defense and taking the under pays. however, i can really see more than 60 pts being scored in this game in a fantastic shootout)
