Mike Bianchi, of the Orlando Sentinel, wrote this great article about the Steelers the day after the Super Bowl, have a look:

By MIKE BIANCHI

First published in print: Monday, February 2, 2009

TAMPA , Fla. - One of the heroes of the game nearly became a bus driver.

The owner of the team walks to work every day.

The fans of the team drink Iron City beer, wave dish towels and ignored the slumping economy to make their pigskin pilgrimage and turn the Super Bowl into a Sunshine State version of the Steel City. T his is why we should all be glad that Pittsburgh is now the home of more Super Bowl championships than any franchise in the history of pro football: Because the players are hungry, the owner is humble and the fans are loyal.

What more could you want out of the NFL's champion of champions? And what more could you want from a Super Bowl?

From Jennifer Hudson's remarkable rendition of the national anthem Sunday to the Boss bringing down the house at halftime to Santonio Holmes making one of the greatest catches in NFL history for the winning touchdown with 35 seconds left, this will go down as a Super Bowl for the ages. The Steelers, by virtue of their unbelievable, inconceivable 27-23 defeat of the Arizona Cardinals, have now won a record sixth Super Bowl and their second in four years.

They are a small-market team that doesn't pay big-time salaries and yet they continue to win ... and win ... and win. In these trying economic times, how can you not feel good that it's the Steelers who have become the model franchise in all of professional sports. Some other of the NFL's other dynastic franchises have come and gone, but the Steelers just keep coming. The Green Bay Packers? They haven't won a Super Bowl in more than a decade. The San Francisco 49ers? They haven't had a winning season in six years and haven't been to a Super Bowl in 15. The Dallas Cowboys? They make headlines because their quarterback dates Jessica but they haven't won a playoff game in a dozen years. In contrast, Pittsburgh 's quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is the youngest quarterback (26) to ever win two Super Bowls, and the only controversy star wide receiver Hines Ward has been involved in is that opposing defenses complain that he plays too physical. :crying01:

The Steelers are the New York Yankees of the NFL-without the arrogance and the payroll. George Steinbrenner buys championships; the Rooney family builds them. Every one of Pittsburgh 's star players-Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu, Willie Parker, HinesWard and James Harrison were either drafted by the team or discovered off the street. Harrison , with his spectacular 100-yard interception return at the end of the first half, made one the greatest plays in Super Bowl history Sunday. He was undrafted out of college, signed as a rookie free agent by the Steelers in 2002 and nearly quit football during his struggling early years to become a Greyhound bus driver.

This is why the Steelers should be celebrated. They win without the knuckleheads that dot so many professional rosters. As great a story as it was for the New York Giants to upset the undefeated Patriots in last year's Super Bowl, the star of that Giants team was knucklehead :toofunny: wide receiver Plaxico Burress. Yes, the same Burress who couldn't cut it in Pittsburgh because Pittsburgh doesn't tolerate knuckleheads. When Burress left town, the Steelers simply drafted Holmes and plugged him into Burress' spot. They were rewarded Sunday. With 35 seconds left, Roethlisberger drilled the ball into triple coverage in the corner of the end zone. Somehow, Holmes was able to come down with the ball and barely get both of his tippy-toes in bounds for the touchdown.

This is the Steelers, a franchise built on patience and principal.

Is it any wonder President Barack Obama made the unusual move of endorsing Pittsburgh this week? Proof positive that if you can't appreciate the Pittsburgh Steelers, you are simply un-American.

Dallas gets more publicity, which is why many people still think of them as America'a team. I'm content to let them have it.

It is fun to be the media darlings for a change. I'm so used to the media hating on the Steelers that all of these "best franchise in sports" articles are kind of cool.

Well said about the "America's Team." They're more like America's Soap Opera.

So now the media loves the Steelers? Give me a break. They are just as fickle as cowboys fans.

I cant remember where i seen or read it , but i guess the back in the 70's, NFL Films came first to the the Rooneys family wanting to promote the Steelers as "Americas Team" in a NFL film. The Chief politely told em off by saying the Steelers are Pittsburgh team and take a hike! The cowgirls were only a second choice in becoming Americas team

What's really funny is that in Dallas....there isn't a really amazing concentration of rabid Cowboy fans. I've lived here for a decade and yeah, sure there are loyal fans, but there are just SOOOOOOO many bandwagon fans of all the Dallas teams... the flags go up when they're winning, the flags come down when they're losing. It's sad. But I bet there are more Steelers fans OUT of Pittsburgh than IN Pittsburgh. :)

i look around my neighborhood and people STILL have their Steeler flags waving off of their front porch.the are horirbly tattered and torn, but they'd be damned if they'd take it down on account of ugliness! they STILL have Terrible Towels in their windows. local business still have discounts for people who wear Black and Gold. it's STILL crazy around here and i love it. -- no such thing as fairweather fans around here. atleast none that i've met. =)

I have a terrible towel attached to my front door for all my Rat neighbors to see. One of them asked how long it will be up this time, as I had one displayed over the entire summer when we won SB XL.
I told him it will stay up 2 weeks for every loss the Rats incurred against the Steelers this year and then two more for weeks for winning our historical 6th SB Championship!
Needless to say, he wasn't enthused with the prospect of seeing the TT for the next several months, but he did congratulate me on the win.

..... speaking of the 'Steeler Nation'.....

while in S.W. Taxylvania recently for a funeral, I noticed many homes proudly flying flags looking similar to the American flag, except the stripes were Yellow & Black, with a Black field in the upper corner:
while taking my Mother to Altmyers, I saw one hanging from the ceiling and realized they say 'STEEL NATION', with the skyline of Pittsburgh is in the Black field.

For $7.95, I just had to buy one and bring it to Floriduh with me upon my return

"America's Team" has the stink of the Cowboys on it and I want no part of it.

It wasn't offered to the Steelers first. It was the title that NFL Films used for the Cowboys '78 season highlight reel (a year that ended with a loss to the Steelers). After a TV announcer used the phrase in a Cowboys introduction in a game the following season, the name stuck.

Sometime after that, Rooney was asked if he felt the Steelers shouldn't be called ATsince after all, they were World Champions. That's when he said, "No, we are Pittsburgh's Team. Even Landry didn't want the nickname at first because he thought it would just put a bigger target on their backs.

But no, I don't want it. It's just a marketing motto, not a real title. Just like Starbucks won't be trying to claim "Good to the last drop" as their own, just because they have better coffee. They don't want people to associate them with Maxwell House.

.... and I don't want to be associated with the Cowboys, or compared (even favorably) to the Cowboys. It gives them unearned credit - and gives the false impression that there is even a debate.

"When you're in other organizations, you recognize that it's different and you respect it..... until you are part of it, you have no idea of the depths.

It's generational, passed down from father to son.

I know the more I get to understand it, the more Steeler Nation drives me. I want to win for them because they are that special.''
