2:13 a.m. Report: Nate Washington to visit Lions

Former Steelers wide receiver Nate Washington will visit the Detroit Lions on Friday, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Washington and Calvin Johnson could form a nice duo for a Lions team that lacks certainty at quarterback.

2:11 a.m. Report: Saints, Broncos eye Rams DB

Rams defensive back Ronald Bartell received immediate interest from the Saints and Broncos when the free-agent market opened Friday, according to the Denver Post.

The Saints look like the front-runner to get him.

12:59 a.m. Redskins sign CB DeAngelo Hall

DeAngelo Hall has agreed to a six-year, $54 million deal to remain with the Washington Redskins.

Hall's agents completed negotiations just as the cornerback was eligible to become a free agent at the stroke of midnight. The contract will include $22.5 million in guaranteed money. Full story ...

12:44 a.m. Rams raid Ravens for free agents?

The St. Louis Rams may be raiding the Baltimore Ravens for two key free agents.

Linebacker Bart Scott and center Jason Brown are set to visit with the Rams, FOXSports.com has learned.

Scott is hitting the market after being unable to strike a long-term contract extension with the Ravens, which also could lose fellow linebacker Ray Lewis in free agency. A seven-year NFL veteran, Scott has started all 16 games for the Ravens for the past three seasons and is considered one of the league's best interior 3-4 linebackers.

The Rams are expected to run a 4-3 defense under new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who was the New York Giants' defensive coordinator. If Scott is signed, middle linebacker Will Witherspoon could return to his more natural position of weak-side linebacker. Full story ...

-- Alex Marvez

12:35 a.m. Richardson to re-sign with Jets

Fullback Tony Richardson will be re-signing with the New York Jets.

Richardson, 37, appeared in all 16 games for the Jets last year, his first season in New York. He rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries.

He was an All-Pro selection in 2007 after paving the way for Adrian Peterson during his final season in Minnesota.

-- Alex Marvez

12:26 a.m. Broncos expected to acquire two RBs

Running backs Correll Buckhalter (Philadelphia) and J.J. Arrington (Arizona) have agreed to multiyear contracts with the Denver Broncos. The deals will become official when both pass physical exams.

Buckhalter can be considered a frontrunner for a starting spot, while Arrington is likely to fill a niche as a third-down specialist and kickoff returner.

A look at what others are writing about in the NFC North.

Chicago Bears

-Chicago is happy to see Rex Grossman go, David Haugh of The Chicago Tribune writes.

-Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald is also happy to see Grossman go.

-Team president/CEO Ted Phillips is firmly behind Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith but the Chicago Tribune's Steve Rosenbloom isn't so sure the Bears are headed in the right direction.

Detroit Lions

-The Lions will likely target mid-level free agents and probably won't come away with a big name.

Green Bay Packers

-With $30 million in cap room, the Packers are looking for new deals, not new players.

-U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) questioned broadcast and cable television executives about the television rules that prevent some Wisconsinites from watching Wisconsin programming with satellite dishes.

Minnesota Vikings

-The Vikings probably won't repeat last offseason's shopping spree.

-The Star-Tribune examines the 2005 draft class and it isn't pretty.

-The possibility of no salary cap starting with the 2010 season could hurt Tarvaris Jackson and Cedric Griffin.

Domonique Foxworth's expected deal with the Ravens would leave the Rams' Ron Bartell as one of the few higher-profile cornerbacks still available.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic has not confirmed the Cardinals' reported interest in cornerback Bryant McFadden.

Also from Somers: Kurt Warner did not sound particularly upset about his contract situation while discussing the matter on Dan Patrick's radio show. The fact that Warner isn't lining up visits suggests he's still hoping to get something done with Arizona.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Rams have interest in 49ers free-agent tight end Billy Bajema. The team has not scheduled a formal visit, but discussions are ongoing. The Rams also hope to speak with Titans receiver Brandon Jones, who will first visit the 49ers.

Clare Farnsworth of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer confirms the Seahawks' plans to meet with T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chris Canty.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger says the Giants plan to visit with Seahawks free-agent defensive tackle Rocky Bernard. Garafolo: "Bernard has also proven himself to be durable, as he's missed only three regular-season games in the past four seasons. The Giants would surely love to add such a reliable presence to the rotation at tackle with Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield." Bernard has played through knee problems.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee says the 49ers are showing interest in Cowboys tight end Tony Curtis. Curtis could replace Bajema, who is drawing interest from the 49ers, Jets and Rams.

Every pro personnel director in the NFL has a player board stacked by grade and position in order to react to player acquisition attempts when free agency starts.

Usually, they will place their own players on the board in the position they have them graded. It gives a good visual as to where a team stands, player by player, as it relates to the free agents available. This board will not include the restricted free agents and history says there is very little traffic in the restricted free agent business because most teams are not willing to give up the draft compensation to acquire a restricted free agent.

Here's a look at my top 50 players in free agency, along with the top five players at each position. Medical issues, age, and salary demands all come into play. And there will be constant flux on the talent board due to terminations, which will continue as the offseason progresses. There should be close to 400 NFL players hitting the free-agency market this week, and even after a number of early signings next week the number of free agents will stay constant as teams continue to release players as roster bonuses come due.

Free agent CB Bryant McFadden reportedly will visit the Cardinals on Sunday.
While the Cards' coaching staff knows McFadden well from their Pittsburgh days, this isn't exactly an ideal match. The Cards have cap room, but McFadden would likely have to compete with Rod Hood to start. He'd be a surefire first-teamer in most other places. This might just be a leverage visit.

Patriots beat writer Mike Reiss wonders if Mike Vrabel's trade could be part of a larger deal including Matt Cassel.
Now that would be a doozy. Reiss is one of the most well-respected beat writers in the country, and is usually very cautious to publish anything resembling speculation. He rightly points out that we have no idea what the compensation in the Vrabel trade is.

I hope that McHugh proves me wrong and makes a great impact in the backfield come '09. The Steelers need that dominating FB pressence in our backfield to become a much better running team in the future and I am not sure that McHugh is the man. I would love to see the Steelers make a splash by getting a good bruiser blocker in the upcoming draft.

the saints re-signed vilma 2 a 5yr deal...

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to terms on a new contract with linebacker Jonathan Vilma, bringing back the team's leading tackler.

The Saints confirmed the five-year deal in a statement on Friday but did not disclose terms of the deal. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the contract is worth $34 million, including $17 million guaranteed and $23 million over the first three years.

Official team site: NewOrleansSaints.com
"We made re-signing Jonathan our top priority, and this is an important first step as we prepare for the 2009 season," said executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis. "Jonathan proved he could come back from his injury and play at a high level and we expect the same or better from him starting this season."

Vilma led the Saints with 151 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2008 along with a pair of fumble recoveries, a sack and an interception in his first season in New Orleans.

He played his first four seasons with the New York Jets and was acquired by the Saints in a trade in February of 2008. Last season he led or shared the team lead in stops in 10 games -- recording double-digit tackle totals in eight games -- and turned in a handful of memorable performances.

"Jonathan is a true impact player on defense and one of our leaders," said coach Sean Payton. "He is consistent, he never comes off the field, and we rely on him to make plays. He proved to be everything we expected when we made the trade for him last year, and having him agree to terms today is a key factor heading into this season."

The 2004 Defensive Rookie of the Year with the Jets after being selected 12th overall out of the University of Miami, Vilma was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2005 when he led the league with 187 tackles. Over his career, he has notched 611 stops (412 solo), 3.5 sacks, seven interceptions, eight forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

Entering his sixth season, Vilma has started 69 of 71 contests in his career, including all 16 last year for the Saints.

Vilma has also been known as one of the NFL's most community-minded players during his tenure in the league. Vilma served as a spokesman for the NFL's Lend A Hand campaign, was a board member of the National Football Foundation's "Play It Smart" Program and has given numerous talks in schools about success on the field and in the classroom.

The team also announced the free agent visit of CB Ronald Bartell.

Brown agrees in principle with Rams

Jason Brown has agreed in principle tonight with the St. Louis Rams on a five-year, $37.5 million contract that includes $20 million guaranteed money.

Brown, the Ravens' starting center last season, will become one of the highest-paid interior linemen in the NFL, averaging $7.5 million per season

Brown reached free agency because the Ravens couldn't agree on his value. The Ravens wanted to pay Brown as a center (the highest-paid is $6 million per season) while the versatile offensive lineman wanted to be paid like a guard ($7 million to $8 million per season).
