View Full Version : Bill to ban Barbie

CHARLESTON -- Barbie has been around for decades, but is it time for the blond to be banned?

It may sound silly, but it's a serious issue for one West Virginia delegate.

"I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you're beautiful, you're beautiful and you don't have to be smart," said Del. Jeff Eldridge, (D) Lincoln County.

Delegate Jeff Eldridge introduced a bill to the house on Tuesday asking lawmakers to stop the sales of Barbie in the mountain state.

Delegate Eldridge isn't trying to target just Barbie but any doll that puts too much importance on physical beauty.

"I knew a lot of people were going to joke about it and poke fun at me. I couldn't get anybody to sign on the bill with me but I said I'm still going to introduce it," said Eldridge.

"I think that it's nice to have a male member of the House of Delegates worried about women's images and what they're supposed to do or they think they're supposed to do to succeed. My sense is that this is probably not a bill that's going to pass," said Del. Nancy Peoples Guthrie, (D) Kanawha County.

Amy Smith of Charleston says her three daughters haven't shown a lot of interest in Barbie yet but should that day come, she's not counting on the legislature to help her send the right message.

"I think that there are other ways to promote confidence and instill values in your daughters other than the toys that they play with," said Smith. "I don't have a problem with Barbie."

The Barbie Ban Bill has been sent to the House Judiciary Committee. Delegate Eldridge admits getting it passed may be a long-shot, but says he's prepared to stand behind his legislation.

This is the same type of nimrod that likes to give ALL the kiddies "participation tropies" in sports. I love anything positive for the kids but I don't believe this BS is the right approach.

How 'bout cha go bounce your head off a brick wall a few times to clear the cobb webs Jeffy, and then you can call it a day. Whataya say pal!

Ha wow...all I have to say about this is if a daughters personal image and confidence is being swayed by a Barbie doll and not her parents, there's serious issues in the household that banning a doll will not fix.

Dude must have got ahold of some bad Moonshine. I guess his next brainstorm will be to introduce legislation to ban the G.I. Joe doll because it will give young boys the impression that enlisting in the military is an honorable thing to do.

Way to go dolt - banning the most popular doll ever made which has made and still makes the Mattel Corporation millions of dollar is really going to help stimulate the economy. :jerkit:

Barbie is a doctor, a lawyer, a mother, a nurse, a vet, sure she's also a beauty queen, etc... she's everything a little girl could ever imagine to be (fairy, ballet dancer, mom, sister, aunt, etc). She fosters imagineation, and since her body image has changed etc, she doesn't foster a body that's unrealistic like her past counter parts.

What's next banning GI Joe or Power Rangers for being too tough or too violent for little boys...

GIVE ME A BREAK AMERICA... she's been here for 50 years and I hope she'll be here for 50 more!!! Barbie was one of my favorite dolls of all time, and she still is.

I think if they are worried about young people getting the idea that if you're pretty you can get anything you want... they should look into ending reality television shows... I mean really what on earth has Paris Hilton and the like done for us as a country other than make us look like dumb butts... "That's hotttttt'

Now I will say I was happy to hear that Bratz dolls were getting the ax, those dolls were horrible little hooker dolls!!!

Thats not fair. There is plenty of smart West Virginians around here. Heck you have to have some smarts to build a meth lab. This jackass that proposed this is from Lincoln Cty. Where the men are men and the sheep are scared. He is probably mad because his wife looks nothing like barbie.

GIVE ME A BREAK AMERICA... she's been here for 50 years and I hope she'll be here for 50 more!!! Barbie was one of my favorite dolls of all time, and she still is.

I grew up with Barbie! My Mom won me an original Barbie doll with the vinyl case, handmade clothes and shoes (damn those shoes hurt when you step on 'em in the middle of the night - LOL!) when I was 4 years old and I still have her in her case with all of the clothes and shoes. The only upside to this dullard's proposed bill is that the value of Barbie would skyrocket if she were banned from being manufactured. A doll collector told me a few years back that my Barbie and accessories is worth well over $1,700.00 - I'm hanging on to her!

Now I will say I was happy to hear that Bratz dolls were getting the ax, those dolls were horrible little hooker dolls!!![

Egads - they were nasty! I always thought the Cabbage Patch dolls were hideous, as well. The ugliest dolls out there are those nasssssty Teletubbies. :yuck: :horror:

Think that skeletal barbie is better suited for LA barbie... Baltimore Barbie would have bigger hair and a louder voice, HON!
