AP NewsBreak: Arena league, union reach agreement

By JIMMY GOLEN, AP Sports Writer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP)—

The Arena Football League and its players reached a collective bargaining agreement that could clear the way for play to resume in 2010.

Jim Renacci, the vice chairman of the AFL executive committee, told The Associated Press the agreement was to be announced Monday.

“That was an integral part of getting us back for 2010,” Renacci said Saturday at a sports law conference at the Harvard Law School, adding an announcement on resuming play could come in the next 30 days. “We really need to if we’re going to get back into the boat for 2010.”

Renacci said the new labor agreement is just one step toward getting back on the field next year. The league also plans to restructure into a single entity ownership model and work out a deal with ESPN, which invested in the league and owned broadcast and internet rights.

A spokesman from the NFLPA, which represents the indoor league’s players, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Renacci, a partner and managing board member of the Columbus Destroyers, said the agreement with the players was the first major hurdle for the 22-year-old league.

The AFL’s possible return bucks a trend of cutbacks in sports as leagues and teams try to adjust to the deepening recession. College programs are cutting expenses, pro leagues have been laying off workers and even blue-chip teams like the New York Yankees are finding it harder to sell once-coveted tickets.

“These are trying economic times,” rocker Jon Bon Jovi, co-owner of the ArenaBowl champion Philadelphia Soul, said in December, when the league’s owners voted not to play in ’09. “The revamping will ensure that the AFL continues to provide value to its fans and not only survives but thrives in the years to come.”

Arena football features eight-on-eight play on a 50-yard, indoor field. The AFL’s 25-team minor league, af2, was not affected by the shutdown.

Renacci said the league plans to resume play with 18 teams—the original 16 plus two in cities he would not identify.

“We’ve had a couple of teams that want to join,” he said.

Ron Jaworskit who is the President of the Philadelphia Soul had said a few days earlier that New Orleans would return and an expansion team in Pittsburgh would be added in 2010.

I actually like arena football, so this is pretty cool in my opinion. I go to all the games of the local af2 team in my area so to have a team in the 'Burgh is cool. I have the Steelers in the fall and arena football to watch in the spring. :applaudit:

If it's black and gold and they're doing well, it will fit in very well.

I love Arena football it's a great way to take up time in the offseason. I used to go all the time to the Carolina Cobras games. (when we had that franchise) Our QB was actually Fred Mcnair, Steve Mcnairs older brother.

Plus I have a cousin Josh Jeffries who plays with the L.A. Avengers.

So I get into it.

The thing about Arena football is it's exciting as hell. There's allway's something happening. I'd allways spring the extra bucks on front row tickets. Man, you are right in the action. Literally reach out and pat the players on the pads. (shoulder pads that is...)

Amen to that! I love to go see my local af2 team, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers. I love the fast pace of Arena Football.

Yeah, and watching on TV just doesnt do it justice. You just don't get the atmosphere. Nothing like someones clock getting cleaned 2 feet in front of you against the wall, that's exciting stuff.

Definitely! I already bought my tickets for the first game of our team for the game on the 27th. It's the opening game of the season so I cannot wait. I'm not front row, but pretty darn close at 4 rows from the field. I wanted to get season tickets but I work at a casino here in PA and my schedule is never guaranteed.

Something with "Steel" in the name and I bet the color scheme will implement black and gold some how. That's what I'd like to see.

Yeah those are good seats...but the front rown is just killer. You will still be in shouting distance of the players. I swear, at least one time I remember myself and a group of friends rattling an opposing QB.. You're just so close. We were heckling the crap out of the dude and he definately kept glancing over at us. He played like crap that game.:chuckle:

I've gotten front row seats before, so I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. It's definitely a rush being right there and getting high-fives from the players. I love that close interaction with the players. Front row seats are $20 more expensive than the seats I got, so I'll save that for another game, probably the last home game of the regular season.

The original team was called the Gladitors right? Why not bring that back.

I think Cleveland has staked claim to Gladiators. It was the Las Vegas Gladiators then they moved to Cleveland.

Thats cool. It hasn't changed that much, when I was going back in NC regularly it was about 18 bucks more for the front row. Heck I remember a few times sitting right beside the players box and talking to them during the game about whats happening. I was a regular. I hated to see that franchise go.
