Marvel Smith visiting San Francisco

Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Marvel Smith is making his first official visit of free agency Wednesday. He is currently in San Francisco visiting the 49ers, a source confirmed.

Smith played mostly left tackle for the Steelers but could be asked to play on the right side in San Francisco due to the presence of left tackle Joe Staley. Pittsburgh already made four signings to keep its offensive linemen and Smith doesn't appear to be in the Steelers' plans.

One selling point for the 49ers is that Smith grew up in nearby Oakland. San Francisco is looking for offensive line help through either free agency or the draft.

Stay heathly, and enjoy the climate for the rest of your career... take care...

I wish him the best...if he doesn't land there I don't no where it might be and I'd hate for Marvel to be on the outside looking in with no home come next season.

He grew up in Oakland, so SF would kind of be a homecoming of sorts. I hope he signs there and can play for a few more years.

He got his 2 rings, so going close to home for 1 more contract would be a great way to end a career.

Oh, just what the 49ers need -- another injury-prone offensive tackle. Last year they used THREE guys to fill one tackle spot because of persistent injuries -- Barry Sims, Jonas Jennings, and some other bum whose name I can't remember. So now they want to sign a 30-plus guy with back problems?

You know, they belong in the NFC West.
