6'6"/227lbs. i heard a great interview with him and he was really impressive. very confident yet extremely humble. not profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfiltery at all. for his pro day he had sub 4.5 (im pretty sure, maybe it was 4.5something) and a sub 4.3 shuttle cone (i think he said 4.22). my bad- i heard wrong. it was 7.1 (which is still pretty damn good for a man of his size.

pat kirwan noted how he'd be a perfect big guy, red zone threat for the steelers and then tim ryan reminded him that limas sweed is pretty big too.

any thoughts on this guy or ideas where he's projected? he seems to have marquez coulston written all over him.

looks like frisco fans are drooling for him in the 3rd which probably puts him out of our range. nobody is a "sleeper" anymore.

I just want our O-Line rebuilt, re-geared, re-engineered.............ummmm, a new one? 1 or two OL's in the next couple of years that are completely capable of starting within a year. Not this 5th, 6th, or 7th round trash that we end up cutting like usual.

I tend to agree with this comparison a lot more. I've never been sold on Barden. I think he is a big risk. If we are talking mid round picks, I would much rather have Mike Thomas. And he's 5'8.

He is a big target that looked like he didnt get in and out of his breaks that well and didnt have the kind of quickness off the ball to gain much separation. The fact that he is 6'6" and has long arms makes everybody drool over his "red zone potential", but I think we already have tall guys like Miller, Spaeth, Sweed that dont get used in the red zone...........so why add another.

Ramses Barden/WR/Cal-Poly: Barden is an imposing 6-foot-6, 227-pound pass catcher with reliable hands. He presents himself as a terrific red zone threat who out-muscles defenders for the reception. The faster Barden runs at the combine, the earlier he'll be drafted.

Barden ran a 4.68 at the combine. but he improved that with a 4.51 at his pro day.

There is no way I would touch him on Madden with that speed.... and after all, isn't Madden the final arbiter of all things football?

i wouldnt mind this guy for the steelers on the third....hes big tall and pretty fast for his size...and supposedly hes a good blocker....and a huge red zone target...he can fit right at #4 with limas as #3 WR...when hines retires in a few years then the steelers would have holmes, sweed, and barden....two reciever that are over 6'3"...i hope the steelers trade up in the third....they should give up some of their picks....maybe both of their 7 round picks to move up in the 3rd and snag barden....its hard to find a guy that big and with that athleticism....i mean he's no kalvin johnson....but hes compared to vincent jackson who is also big and physical.....i hope they get him but if not....they can get wr patrick turner from usc 6'5" 225 in the later rounds.....who would be a pretty good possession receiver in the long run for the steelers....if he can step up his game!!!.....after all he played for USC....they have a great program....so idk....steelers always find guys who fit the steeler way....so lets see what happens come april.....

my mock draft would look something like this....

1- CB SEAN SMITH OR CB DARIUS BUTLER( I PREFER SMITH OUT OF THE TWO). OR MAYBE EVEN TYSON JACKSON OR JARRON GILBERT

2-DE JARRON GILBERT(IF AVAILABLE), DE FILI MOALA, OR THEY CAN GO O-LINE OR EVEN CB IF THEY DIDN'T DO SO IN THE 1ST PICK

3-BEST OLINE, D-LINE AVAILABLE IF NOT ADDRESSED IN PICKS 1 & 2, MAYBE A WR SUCH AS RAMSES BARDEN, OR A DEFENSIVE BACK...

4-GET THE BEST O-LINE/D-LINE AVAILABLE....

5-AN ATHLETIC/PROJECT TYPE CB.....LIKE IKE TAYLOR WAS......MAYBE DOMINIQUE JOHNSON....6'2"....REMINDS ME A LIL OF IKE.....

5-GET MORE DEPTH IN O-LINE/D-LINE, MAYBE EVEN A FULLBACK

6. A RETURN SPECIALIST......OR QB..(May have been traded to move up in the 3rd)

7. (May have been traded to move up in to the 3rd)
A DEPTH ON WHATEVER NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED

7.B DEPTH ON WHATEVER NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED

If he has trouble seperating, he won't succeed at the next level. Here's a report I found on him:

Great height and outstanding bulk...Excellent athleticism...Real strong and physical...Good leaper with terrific ball skills...Runs with some power...Has a nose for the endzone...Decent blocker...Intelligent with solid intangibles..Extremely productive and was dominant at his level.

Weaknesses:
Does not have great timed speed...Isn't real quick or sudden...Has room to improve as a route runner...Just average hands...Struggles to get separation...Not much of a deep threat...Inconsistent effort and concentration ...Conditioning?... Did not play against top competition.

One indicator of potential is YPC, and his career average is a very impressive 20.4, HOWEVER, that was against tier two competition.

that was the same knock calsteeler had on jarron gilbert.

his ypc, 50 td's, and scoring a td in 21 of his last 22 games suggest he was destroying inferior competition. heres what rivals has to say-

The Good: Has a physically imposing frame with long arms; knows how to pluck the ball away from his body. Is a big target and uses his body to seal defenders and get after the ball. Good awareness and coordination down the field to track the deep ball. Is a jump-ball threat and loves to go up and attack at the highest point. Knows how to make plays in traffic over the middle; displays very strong hands.
The Bad: Plays at one speed and really struggles transitioning in and out of his breaks. Struggles dipping his hips and displays very little explosion to his game. Needs to play next to a burner who can open up the field for him underneath.

sounds to me he relied mostly on his physical tools.... almost like he jogged his routes. his problems with running crisper routes should be easilly correctable.

with that being said, i see the steelers targeting a wr in the 4th or 5th (as their visits and pressing needs would suggest), and this guy will probably go in the third, dropping him off their radar.

That's why you have to put him on the X button. You can shave 6/10's on thumbspeed alone.

I think it sounds like he's just not big (heavy) enough to play TE...for us anyway.

Yeah, I think Barden will go in round 2-3 an hopefully we dont draft a WR that early. I viewed Vincent Jackson as another big guy with average speed that couldnt separate from NFL CB's too. He's proved to be a really good #2 WR though.

Blind squirrels find nuts on occasion, even Calsteel.

But questioning his competition level is no reach. He dominated against low level competition, which is what you'd expect for a 6'6" WR.

The thing that scares me is that he's scouted even AT that low level as potentially having trouble seperating. THAT is the single most important factor for WR's in the NFL. I say pass based on that one knock. We already have a big receiver with questionable hands that we know CAN seperate in the NFL.

I would pass on him altogether. The little guy from Arizona has more upside IMO, in that he played in the Pac-10, he can return kicks, and nobody questioned his ability to catch the ball.

yeah, and we shouldnt let the failed willie reid experiment scare us from taking another wr/kr in the middle rounds.

lots of people have talked up alot of good prospects here. this is the direction im hoping to see-

1. OT
2. DE
3. CB
4. C
5. WR/KR
5. S/ any OL

BPA with the rest (hopefully with a true fb option sprinkled in).

not too original or enlightening but it seems like their might be some pretty decent prospects at those positions in the stated rounds. im really not wanting a cb, c, or wr in the first round, but would definitely understand taking a player like jenkins if they fell to the 32nd pick (like mendenhall and sweed last year).

If we cant get OT in the first, and alphonso smith is available...i would snatch him in a heartbeat. i would possibly pass on mack if he is available as the Center position is pretty deep.

other than that, that works fine with me.

The guy is primarily a big WR red zone threat . I think that the steelers are looking some one with more lateral quickness and acceleration. And some one who might possible return kicks. If we didnt take Sweed last year then this guy would be high on the Steelers list.
