We have lost some good players over the years. 1996 was a killer year.

Illustrates a point, though. How many huge name FA signings have we had over the years? I count.........zero. Yet hom many Super Bowls have we won?

Definately had some memory flashes from those lists... both good and bad memories for sure.
We have signed some pretty solid FA's through the years for sure and have learned that you dont build your team throigh FA, you use it to tweak your roster and chemistry can play a big part in it.

Why isnt Justin Hartwig plugged in at '08?

Thats a good question I have no idea.

I wouldn't say "zero" but you're very close. Will Wolford, OL was an elite offensive tackle.
Jeff Hartings, C was highly regarded as well.

I don't know if they meet your "huge name FA" billing but Wolford was DEFINITELY a HUGE NAME offensive tackle.

'96 was pre-big buck lineman days. Back then it was all about the skill players.

I believe that Justin Hartwig was technically not a FA beacuse he was cut by the panthers.

Along with Wilford and Hartings, I would also say that Kevin Greene at the time was a big FA signing.

Many solid signings also like Farrior who has been a rock since coming here, also guys like Wayne Gandy and Kimo were very productive for a time.

Remember, too, I said "HUGE" name signings. Like Moss, or TO, or Brett Favre... we just don't go there, namely because those guys usually command salary based on what they've DONE not what they are still capable of doing.

Agreed and hopefully the Steelers will never wander down that road. I like the the status quo method of operation, Draft and produce our own big name players.
