Not the kind from The Burgh

Did you hear about this:

A ship was sailing to Kenya to provide food and other things to people. It was flying the Stars and Stripes and had an American crew of 20. Some dumbass Somali pirates hijacked it (apparently this has been going on frequently this past month---the pirates ask for high ransoms and usually get them).

Well, the American crew, which was unarmed, was able to retake the ship and actually take one of the Pirates into custody...

I can't wait to hear the whole story when they interview the crew...

Friggin' idiots---don't they KNOW they shouldn't mess with the US?
I love hearing stories like this...

Still, they managed to get something like $3million from the Russians and $3 or $4 Million from the ? Chinese ( not sure, I have to check on that).

And don't forget what they did to our whirlybirds...

It took 10,000 of them to do that....

You know right now,

There are a lot of special forces that are quite upset the sailors were able to take the ship back.

They keep talking about unarmed ships getting highjacked out there, why dont they bring a few guns with them? That way if they are attacked they can at least defend themselfs if their going the such dangrous waters as these.

Maybe we should recruit them and have them relocate to the South China Sea?

That's what I'm saying Preach!
The very first thing the Navy should do is have a fighter strafe that frickin life boat the pirates are presently occupying.

Next: "HEEEELLLLOOOOO!!! NAVY!!!!!" You have an awesome opportunity here for a live fire excercise right off the coast of Somalia! Don't you think that the Gunners Mates would love to shoot at something else besides 50 gallon drums for a change? And oh yea, you'd be making the seas safe for commerce at the same time. :drink:

Git 'er done!

Great ideas---I'm all for watching shit blow up---In fact, I'd love to be the one to make that shit blow up! But I think the idea would be better to blow up the life boat's mother ship! And then provide Navy escort (via submarine) to those shipping lanes...
Just imagine how big the skinnies' eyes would get when they saw a torpedo coming up from the deep

In all seriousness, they apparently still have the Captain of the Merchant Ship...

so maybe the SEALS have a job to do after all...hooyah

The first time you allow them to evacuate the main boat (and confiscate their weapons), then make them watch you sink it.

After that, it's a free for all. Sink the mother ship first again, then pluck all of the isolated boat at your leisure. :chuckle:

I saw that. Well, if they are dumb enough to allow unarmed civilians to retake their stolen ship, they are incompetent enough to die at the hands of an elite rescue team.

The thing is, how do you know they weren't involved? When I heard the ship was taken back, I was like "Yeah, right it was the CREW alright...."

When was the last time you ever heard of Spec. Ops. actually doing a prisoner exchange??

I say, send a Navy Seal unit to get the hostage and blow up the boat.

Then take one of our battleships out of mothballs and let loose the cannons.

There is ALWAYS a need for a couple battleships to be kept around!!

no no no - the way to stop pirates is you hang em when you catch them, cut off their heads and leave them on a stake outside their village.

the other pirates eventually get the message

Actually, employ Roman/Israeli tactics. Next time they hijack a ship, blow the ship up, Pirates and captives included.

They'll never hijack another ship again.

While it would be hard for me to condone it, it would work.

I don't understand why, they don't just track these guys after they leave, trace them back to their "underground lairs" and then seek and destroy.

"Yeah, sure, here's your millions of dollars, you are free to go!!" Just don't pay any attention to that red dot following you... :chuckle:

Isn't this the first American ship they've done this too?

My guess is you aren't far off what will actually happen in retaliation...

This is what I've been wondering.

If you know you're going anywhere near Africa, what on earth is stopping anyone with half a brain from just bolting a couple of machine guns to the ship. This whole thing could've been prevented if they'd spent, like, half an hour thinking about basic self-defense.

I heard their was an international law (WTF is that anyway?) stating that no weapons are allowed on these vessels. That needs to be changed!

The crews on private ships are not Navy or Marine, nor are they trained that way.

International law overrides the Constitution according to the Obama administration. The laws everyone is subject to no matter where your at.

The problem is you can't just start arming merchant ships and then expect a country to allow them into their trading ports-of-call...

"Don't mind that big 50mm cannon on the bow...it's just for protection. Honest."

Would we (the US) want some ship from the Mid-East (or anywhere else, for that matter) coming into one of our ports and docking there when it has big guns on it?
The peaceful merchant trade ship becomes a ship of battle when it gets armed

Misinterpreting things is a great way to make an argument!

International law is exactly that, a communion between many nations (US included) on rules we'll abide by.

The Constitution is for ourselves, and only ourselves. How silly to think the Constitution applies to Somolia/International Waters.

Show me where I said it applies to other counties! Reading comprehension sunshine.

Obamas administration wants international law to trump constitutional law within the US.
