The Pittsburgh Steelers wanted to make sure Hines Ward would complete what he had started -- one of the great receiving careers in Steelers history.

Ward agreed and signed a four-year, $22 million contract extension that will allow him to stay a Steeler the rest of his career, according to a source. Ward was scheduled to be a free agent after the season. He is now signed through 2013.

The deal also frees up valuable cap room for the team.

The 33-year-old Ward has 800 career catches for 9,780 yards and 72 touchdowns.

Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Only on ESPN right now...but wow.

I think its fair for both sides. I was thinking a little less would get it done, but if he deliever the same leadership and stats over this time, its great for the team.

Once the years get announced we will see the true value of the deal.

Need to get Miller under wraps now.

allow me to pat myself on the back for calling this deal last week-

http://forums.steelersfever.com/showthread.php?t=35282&page=3&highlight=ward

now for contract extension he counts about 9 mil this year. extend him 3 more years at 5,4,3, per year regressively = 4 yrs/$21 mil.

guarantee $12-13 mil which is about double what he is scheduled to make this season.

reduce his cap hit this year to about $6 mil (if we need the space), which would mean pushing $2 mil per season into the 3 remaining years.

year 2 = 7 mil cap hit
year 3 = 6 mil
year 4 = 5 mil

i would prefer not having to reduce this years hit and save an extra mil/ season for the next 3 years.

this would be a very fair and generous offer and i dont think it takes into account a hometown discount i think we can get.

EDIT- after posting this, i read the parameters of the torry holt to JAX 3 year deal (holt is a year younger than ward and statistically more accomplished)...

and am convinced my scenario was very generous. leverage to extend ward. i like it!

(i really need to become an agent- that was easy)

now the question... Does he play the entire contract?

I sure hope so... maybe even beyond? Ward has the skill set to actually play into his early 40's because he isn't dependent on speed. As a position receiver, he can keep playing and playing, as long as he doesn't get hurt badly.

Brilliant move on the part of the FO. Recall Hines going into the last year of his last contract. A bit of a disruption. Now we'll have a jacked up Hines going into camp and a leader on the field as long as he wants to play. This will also drive the development of the other receivers. Brilliant move!!

Now Heath!!

Steelers Ward accepts new contract; deal creates room under salary cap
Sunday, April 26, 2009
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Monday, Hines Ward said he wanted to retire with the Steelers, no matter what the price.

Yesterday, he found out the price.

Ward, 33, will sign a contract that will last either four or five years this week, his agent said yesterday.

Agent Eugene Parker acknowledged that the new contract will likely keep Ward with the Steelers the rest of his career. He said that Ward had not signed the deal, and it still was not determined whether it will be four or five years.

Parker also said that the deal was done in part so the Steelers could save salary-cap room this year. Ward was scheduled to earn $5.8 million in salary with a cap number of $8.55 million.

The new contract reduces his salary this season and provides Ward with a signing bonus that will be pro-rated over the five years of the contract, saving the team the much-needed room under the cap. The Steelers could have created as much as $5 million of salary-cap room for 2009.When he spoke Monday, Ward said he would do whatever it took to stay with the Steelers, comparing his situation to that of Jerome Bettis, who took a cut in his salary to remain with the team in 2004.

"I want to be a Steeler," Ward said after the team's first spring practice. "If it came down to both parties agreeing on a situation, then I'm for it. I don't want to put on another uniform. I'm late in the game now to worry about it.

"You look at all the previous players who went on and played for other places. I learned a lot from Jerome, what he did. I want to go down in Steelers history to be one of the better wideouts to wear the black and gold. If the two parties can come together and decide on something, I'm willing to do that."

Ward needs only 220 yards to become the first Steelers receiver to hit 10,000 in his career. His 800 receptions are most in club history.
