The Allegheny Commons Initiative has gotten a boost from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The club today announced its commitment of $300,000 in operating funds for the park's restoration over the next six years.

The Steelers are participating in a state Neighborhood Partnership Program and getting tax credits for their gift.

Mark Fatla, executive director of the Northside Leadership Conference, said the Steelers' commitment is a tenfold increase over the club's previous donation of $5,000 over five years. The Rooney family, which owns the Steelers, has also been an individual contributor. Other contributors include the H.J. Heinz Corp., NRG and the Mexican War Streets Society.

The commons initiative is a long-term plan to restore the park's historic features, including planting more trees, reestablishing fountains and the grand promenade.
