Oh hell yeah! You KNOW they would've wanted a five minute penalty at the least!

This will be Sid's first "7th Game" appearance. If he skated around like a mad man in the 6th game, imagine what he'll be like tonight on the ice!

I say Sid pokes in the game winner with seconds on that clock!

I hope not...my stomach couldn't take that, I'm low on Tums the way it is. I could use a nice relaxing 5-1 blowout right about now.

that and the caveman moaning in a painful heap after a crunching body check from Gonchar!

I'd love nothing more -sweeeeeeet revenge - but Serg isn't a "body crunching" type of guy. I'm sure Orpik will be on that cheap shot whiney little bastard like white on rice. :tt03: I'd sure love to see one of Serg's lasers between Varlamov's legs. :applaudit:

I'm not going to jinx the team by predicting a game winning goal. Neither team is going to stop bringing it until that final sec ticks off that clock or the OT goal is put behind one of the goaltenders. I have so much confidence in this team that I refuse to allow myself to think anything but positive thoughts in this last 75 minutes before game time. :tt03:

Welcome back Serg - I've missed you!:applaudit:

GONCHAR TO PLAY IN GAME 7

I've been informed by two sources that injured Pens defenseman Sergei Gonchar will attempt to play in Game 7 tonight vs. Washington. Gonchar took part in the morning skate and will wear a brace during tonight's game. The amount of playing time Gonchar will receive is still uncertain. There's a chance that he'll only play on the power play but that could change depending on how his knee feels. KDKA-TV's Jory Rand is in Washington and will have more on this story tonight on KDKA-TV News at 5 and 6.

whats so nerve racking about this series is neither team can feel really comfortable ven if they take a 3 goal lead into the 3rd period. even with great d and goal tending, it seems anything can happen at any point of the game.

so do we root for the pens to score first or not? :dang:

Yes - - absolutely. What they need to do is to establish at least a 2 goal lead and build upon it, something the Pens haven't done yet in any of these games thus far.

Past History states that 71% of the first goal scorers of game 7 have won.

But the thing is I want the Penguins to score a second goal to before the Caps can get on the board.

We have some visitors. Might be some of those Caps fans who were over on their board after Game 5 bemoaning and capping on their own team and saying they didn't have a prayer. Then after Game 6, they just about broke their necks to hop back up on the Caps bandwagon. :jerkit:

Ovechkin giving the puck away to Sid and watching while lying on the ice as Sid strolled down for his second goal: PRICELESS

the roar from the Pens fans in Washington as all 6 of our goals went in: PRICELESS

deserved win, great to crush them on their own ice. this is exactly how every game should have gone, we dominated them this entire series, they were just very clinical, but for most of the games we looked like we were on the power play when it was 5v5. and tonight we just scored the goals that we should have been scoring all series.

The Penguins have been the better team in this series throughout. It's about time they finally proved it in a blowout.

Give credit to Simeon Varlamov. He's a scrappy kid and he's going to be great in years time. He kept the Caps in this series.

The Craps are kicked out of the playoffs by the Penguins once again, and Ovechdick doesn't get his shot at the cup! Congratulations to the Pens, and thank you HTG. You keep proving me wrong time and time again with your positive spirits.

I watched it twice at work. Once when the crowed was there and I usually saw a goal on replay after hearing the crowd roar and looking up. Then after everyone left on the FSN replay.

Thoughts:

As if this wasn't clear before, Sid > OV.

MAF may give up some soft goals, but he is money when it counts.

With this loss, does this mean that Pens' fans will now fill the arena in DC next year as the Caps' "fans" move onto another sport?

Seriously, both of these teams have so much young talent, imagine, we could actually see this repeated 6 or 7 times (or more) over the careers of Sid and OV. Simply amazing.

OV is still a punk for what he did to Sarge. The notwithstanding, I'm surprised that things stayed as clean as they did in the third period. Sure, there was the high stick to Sid and a few other plays. But, really, much cleaner than I thought it was going to be.

I was watching and recording so I got to watch it again too - sober, after my nap.

I loved seeing the asswhacked Caps fans Versus kept showing after the 3rd, 4th and 5th goals....and the 6th....especially the 6th.

See there? I was worried about nothing. Just hope Gonchar's leg gets better for next week.

I've already taken enough of a beating elsewhere tonight to the point where my head hurts!

Good. Your ass is going to hurt the next time I see you. :buttkick:

All I'll simply say is that this team finally has made me a full believer like last year's team did, and that I will not be doubting them from this day forward.

It ain't over until the clock strikes 0.00 in the Pens' elimination game.

LET'S GO PENS!!!!

I don't understand why you doubted them in the first place. Where I come from, when you support a team, you don't stop believing in them no matter what.

I hate to say I told you so, but . . . .:flap:

Way to go Pens! Great Game...for us. :chuckle:

I hope not...my stomach couldn't take that, I'm low on Tums the way it is. I could use a nice relaxing 5-1 blowout right about now.
I listened to a lot of pre-game predictions, including about 2 hours of NHL live, and nobody picked the game like tonight. Most were guessing a 1 goal game, OT or having an empty netter. I liked it MUCH better this way.

The Penguins have been the better team in this series throughout. It's about time they finally proved it in a blowout.

Give credit to Simeon Varlamov. He's a scrappy kid and he's going to be great in years time. He kept the Caps in this series.

yep. I think throughout this series, the Pens have had the better forecheck and made it difficult for the caps to move the puck near the boards. Also, we dominated getting the sticks in the passing lanes causing the caps to make a pile of turnovers.

Varlamov...he played out of his head for the better part of this series, but you can't keep taking 40+ shots a game and continue a .950 save %, rookie or not.

I watched this team for ages, and it seems like a long time since WE were the team outshooting the opponent.

I Like It! I Like it a lot!

Ok where to start:

1) Hearing my daughter come running out of her room asking, "Did the Penguins put the biscuit in the basket" is priceless.

2) Hearing her say, "Sid the Kid" also priceless.

3) Watching Ovarian put his head in his gloves after the fourth goal and quitting less than 5 minutes into the 2nd period was above priceless

4) Having my daughter run to her door when she should be sleeping saying, "I want to see them put the biscuit in the basket again" was comical (then hearing her cry that I told her to go to bed was drama at it's best - yes I'm a stickler for bed times especially for soon to be 4 year olds).

5) Wondering how I'm going to get her Penguins earrings before the end of the next series as well as a new t-shirt on my budget - gonna take some financial manipulation!

6) Being able to talk smack talk to all my friends back in the DC area who claimed the caveman was a better player than Crosby - AWESOME!

By Chris Bradford, Times Sports Staff Published: Thursday, May 14, 2009 12:13 AM EDT

WASHINGTON — The locals may have “Rocked the Red” in D.C. on Wednesday night, but it was the team in the black and gold that rolled the Capitals.

Again.

In what has become a rite of spring, the Penguins, led by Sidney Crosby, dashed the Capitals’ Stanley Cup hopes with a dominating 6-2 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at the Verizon Center.

It was the seventh time in eight postseason meetings that the Penguins have eliminated Washington.

“You definitely wouldn’t predict a score like this,” defenseman Mark Eaton said. “But we’ll take it. It made it a lot less stressful throughout the game.”

This time, however, might have been most agonizing for the D.C. faithful.

Many of them began filing out midway through the game. They came out in record numbers all season only to see Washington go 4-4 on home ice in the playoffs.

Not only did the Capitals lose two overtime games after taking a 2-0 lead, but they were back on home ice after winning Game 6 in dramatic fashion at Mellon Arena to decide this Super Series once and for all.

Instead, Alex Ovechkin and the Southeast Division champions were in over their heads against a determined Crosby and a Penguins team that showed why they are returning to the NHL’s final four for the second year in a row.

“People talk about the anxiousness or the big stage, but this is why you play the game,” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. “We play to compete, to lay it on the line.

“I think this is a situation he’s prepared and worked for.”

What had been a tremendous series ended with a dud.

Ovechkin, the league’s leading goal-scorer, couldn’t even bring himself to wave a finger or jump against the glass when he finally got Washington on the board late in the second period.

Mike Green, the leading goal scorer among defenseman, was non-existent offensively and defensively brutal the entire series.

And Simeon Varlamov, who at times conjured up images of Ken Dryden, finally looked like the 21-year-old goaltender making the 18th start of a career that he is.

It got so bad Wednesday that Washington coach Bruce Boudreau pulled Varlamov in favor of veteran Jose Theodore early in the second period after the rookie surrendered four goals on 18 shots.

Crosby and Kevin Adams scored eight seconds apart in the first period and Bill Guerin, Kris Letang and Jordan Staal added goals in the second.

The Penguins advance to the conference final and will play the winner of tonight’s Game 7 of the Boston/Carolina series.

For as hyped as this series was, it sure felt good to see Ovi sent home and to watch Sid and Evgeni move on beyond him. All this talk about Ovi. I won't deny he's a skilled hockey player, but I don't like his dirty hits. His frantic fly down the ice to smack that goal in at 5-0 while the Flower was away from the net proved not only his determination, but desperation. He who lasts laugh? Surely does laugh best! It sure felt good last night putting 6 nails in their coffin. A decisive and unquestionable beat-down. That's the way to end this series and shut the mouths of anyone who'd want to say we squeaked out a win!

GREAT JOB PENS!

I wished for 5-1...I got 6-2 instead. Great game...Varlomov woke up and realized that he's a nobody and was treated accordingly....FINALLY!

Course now the excuses are starting. There's an article today that Capt. Caveman was playing with an injury. Guess what...so was Gonchar!

LET'S GO PENS!

I only have 1 negative on the whole game. Can someone please tie Fleury to the goal posts so he CANNOT go behind the net? He had another great assist on Caveman's goal. Please please please just play smarter.

Something that Mike Lange mentioned that's worth noting is this.......... In our history of series versus the Caps, the Pens have lost the first game to the Caps 6 out of 7 times. History is repeating itself.
We can now make that 7 out of 8 times that we've started our series against the Caps having lost the first game to them and still went on to win the series! :tt02:

And for Sid's first 7th game? It was heaven!

In reading stories online this morning, I found this funny. The story that follows this link to the Washington Times is good, but check out the last word in the url -- "flattened".......... that says it all!

Washington Post:

In the End, Crosby Was the Better Player

The good people of Halifax -- the Great White North, in general -- can breathe easy this morning. Their no-frills golden child -- the savior of Canadian hockey, the cutting rebuttal to all the new-fangled showmanship Alex Ovechkin has suddenly corrupted their sport with -- is moving on.

Sid the Kid's sublime two-goal, three-point performance, especially that breakaway score to ensure a Game 7 rout early in the third period, brought so many knowing grins of satisfaction to the gatekeepers of puck purity. But not as much as seeing a look-at-me Russian showboat in bright red lose and go home. To Moscow -- or Mexico, for all they care.

Queen's Land 6, KGB 2.

Penguins-Capitals was never merely about a tremendous Stanley Cup series showcasing the NHL's brightest stars going the distance, one full of riveting theater until an abject dud of a Game 7.

No, to the hard-core traditionalists who view most uber-skilled players from overseas as little more than Euro trash, this was about validating their xenophobia.

Sidney Crosby, the quiet farm boy from Nova Scotia, won; his Pittsburgh team is going back to the Eastern Conference finals. Ovechkin, the YouTube demigod who once pretended his stick was on fire after a goal, got his just dessert.

Simeon Varlamov, the Capitals' 21-year-old goalie, told Russian writers afterward he was surprised Crosby said, "Great series" to him in the handshake line, "considering he probably scored more goals against me than anyone in the playoffs. . . . For what he did in this series, they should build a monument for him."

Maybe the greatest praise came from Bruce Boudreau, the Washington coach and Ontario's own, who has seen a good Canadian player or two in his day:

"I always thought he was a great player, but I didn't know how great a player," said Boudreau, who had earlier in the series called Crosby the second-best player in hockey. "He's always on. He doesn't take time off."

Surely not last night in Washington, where Crosby essentially tucked the nation that invented the sport safely into bed. For the moment, their game was safe from that emotional interloper, celebrating his grand success in such an unCanadian way.

Just to expand on that...

If the Pens make it back to the SCF, it'll be the first time since the 1984 Oilers that a team went back to the Finals a year after losing in the Final - that year, the Oilers ended the Islanders' dynasty and won the Stanley Cup after being swept by the Islanders in the Final the year before. Also, if both the Pens and Wings make it back, it'll be the first time since that same year that the same 2 teams met in the Finals in back-to-back years.

Check out the comments section below the story the Canadian hockey press is running:

CAPS EMBARRASSED ON HOME ICE BY PENGUINS IN GAME 7

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=278628

It's a hoot

"I lost count of how many times Ovechkin was just floating in his own end allowing the Pens to pass and shoot at will as well as hanging near the oppositions blue line that game. Shameful. When you look up cherry picker and soft in the dictionary you'll see his photo. He's only tough when he's cheap shotting and only good when he has the puck."

Thanks for the link Killer. Some of those are pretty funny. Of course you can pick out the caps fans complaining there were no penalties on the Pens. Whaaa. :crying01:

Crosby "won't say he likes front and centre, the big stage, or anything like that," Penguins forward Bill Guerin said. "But he really knows how to perform in it."

I'm sure everyone noticed how low key Crosby was after he scored. Put the puck in, raised an arm, and that was it. I think knowing he was playing against "the showboat", who leaps into the glass even when it wasn't his goal, made him very conscious of what mattered the most...the WIN.
