So yesterday as I was home sick, I decided to watch the movie "Leatherheads" and there was a quote near the beginning of the movie that got my attention:

Rules, rules are going to destroy the game

There were a few others and really made me think, was this movie made for Goodell? I mean if he truly watched it, then he would understand that micro managing the game the way that he has (along with the rules committee and some of the thin skinned owners) is bad for the game and he's got to let go of the strangle hold he has on the game.

I agree rules are killing this game. I see both sides though. On one side there is the NFL who is trying to protect their product like any company would do. Lets be honest no one wants to see a guy get carted off the field...right?

But on the other side who are these rules protecting? In the 70's when rules where passed to prevent overly aggressive defenses who were they aimed at...the Steelers. After SB X, Jack Lambert said the rules are trying to kill the Pittsburgh defense and we had to find different ways to win.

The "Mel Blount" rule was then established to prevent blind hits to offensive players. Now this years the same rule for offensive players blind hitting defensive players...aka the "Hines Ward" rule.

I think protecting players is important but not at the cost it's taking right now. Like Polamalu said it's becoming a pansy game.
