SOme of you here know my feelings on the press calling a president simply Mr. Bush or Mr. Obama. I think it is disrespectful.

However, this is the first time I have read of anyone one-naming a first lady with the last name, without ANY title.

I know most of you probably don't care. But wouldn't it be nice if SOME deference was displayed for the first family? I mean, come on.

BTW, I didn't read most of the article, but it seems like a "how is the adjustment going for your family" type article-- filler stuff and Oprah! stuff.

Come on. Just a LITTLE deference please?

I'm sorry, Father, but respect is not handed out - it is EARNED. From some of Mrs. Obama's comments both pre and post-election, she hasn't earned that respect, at least from me.

I heard Laura Bush referred to as Mrs. Bush numerous times and it didn't bother me in the least.

How many times was "First Lady" Bush referred to by Laura Bush? How come no one cared when "First Lady" Kennedy was referred to as "Jackie Kennedy" or "Jackie Onassis"?

But saying Mrs. Obama causes an uproar?

I completely agree. I always refer to the president by his title at least the first time I mention his name in a paragraph and I never use simply his last name. If I say 'President Obama' to begin one sentence and want to write his name again immediately after, I will use Barack Obama - but those are the only two variations I will really use and I dislike referring to him without 'President' in front.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I guess. But when someone says 'President" before the commander-in-chief's last name, I tend to take them more seriously. Something about it shows a sense of respect and gratitude that makes you seem like a more intelligent; less bitter person.

Like I said, everyone is different. But I personally could not agree more with your post. If someone is in a position that demands respect, even if you don't think they are doing the best job, I believe they deserve to be referred to by the title they've earned. There are very few exceptions (IE: Watergate; Nixon) where I would differ from that opinion.

O.K., I'll play a long. I was responding to your post here where you referenced her title as first lady. I will put those parts in bold since it has been proven time and time again you are unable to recall what you have stated in previous posts:

See how you twice referenced the fact that she has the title of "First Lady"? That was what I was responding to. The fact that it is O.K. for everyone else to be mentioned without their title, but it is an outrage to mention Michelle Obama without her title. Shouldn't it then be an outrage when Obama's T.V. campaign ads referred to then President Bush as just "George Bush" when comparing McCain to Bush? I don't recall any fuss being made over that?

I also notice how you take a personal pot-shot at me, but do not challenge HometownGal for making the same statement:

She doesn't hold an office, so she hasn't earned a title in my opinion.

She may not officially hold a position, but I believe she has her own office with her own staff, I thought that at one time the First Lady even had her own press secretary. She also has a lot of civil obligations she has to see to. And don't think she doesn't have the Presidents ear.

How about this.....since everybody should have a chief of staff and a personal assistant (giggle), I'll hire some, and send First Lady Obama the bill for them.

Then I'll tell "all the little people" how great my life is. (giggle)

no personal vendetta. you just happened to make an incredibly ignorant statement and i called you on it.

:point:

She doesn't hold an office, so she hasn't earned a title in my opinion.

now on to ignorant statement #2... i see you are accompanied with invisible "outrage" there in the land of fantasy and make believe. Where is this "fuss" you speak of?

what you recall is pretty irrelevant, now isnt it?

preacher has voiced his opinion on this before and just because he starts a thread on a pet peeve of his DOES NOT mean there is any national outrage.

you are seeing things that arent there. :noidea:

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q23/shortyshane_2006/movie_i_see_dead_people.jpg

I see outrage and fuss...

personally, i dont mind saying obama or bush on a mb as a form of shorthand, but if i were to ever meet one of them (or any former president for that matter) i would properly address them as Mister President. their wife would get the same respect, being called either mrs. president or ma'am.

they have earned that. they deserve it. but thats just me.

i remember the days when kids were taught to address adults and people of authority or a higher position with the title "sir" or "ma'am" whether it was earned or not.

it was a respect thing, and a politeness thing. :hunch:

what the hell ever happened to those days?

again (since it has been proven time and time again you cant recall what you have stated in previous posts) -

She doesn't hold an office, so she hasn't earned a title in my opinion

Just wait until GBMel gets into this thread with Tony!!

well we already know how that goes. he will say theres no way i would address bush as "Mr. President" and then say that i said i wouldnt walk across the street to piss on him if he were on fire.

then i would ask him to provide a link where i said that.

he would fail to produce, responding with buzz words like "socialism", "marx" and "liberal" and demanding for me to justify why i voted for obama.

at which point i would post "NO :link: = EXPOSED"

LOL. Actually Preach I generally don't post in these types of threads or the pile on Obama threads. I generally stay in the trenches and stick to the issues of conservative vs. liberal principles.

For instance, I usually wait for tony to say something that makes no sense to me like this one on Obama's trillion dollar deficit spending:

tony hipchest

its a necessary evil. its like re-breaking a bone that wasnt set properly the first time. just consider it an investment in yours and your childrens future.

to which I reply

gbmelblount

I realize you've never even had an economics course Tony, and that is probably why you use this "re-breaking" analogy that is very ....errrrr, ummmmm complex and hard for us less intelligent people to understand....

So why don't you take a moment and explain why you feel this is an "INVESTMENT" in our children's future as opposed to a debt that is being forced upon them...... to the tune of trillions of dollars of additional spending (and taxes) by an already bankrupt government....that is if you don't mind......

To which he usually doesn't respond for obvious reasons.... :chuckle:

So although you you would think I would get involved in a thread like this, or Pelosi on waterboarding, or if Obama bowed, I generally don't.
