Former Steelers running back Davenport's car stolen, totaled

Wednesday, May 20, 2009
By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najeh Davenport chased a suspected car thief who, police said, drove off in his 1970 Chevrolet Impala when he left it running outside his Carrick home yesterday.

The man sped off and struck four parked cars, police said, then got out of the totaled Impala and ran to the parking lot of Foodland on Brownsville Road, where Mr. Davenport and several witnesses held him until officers arrived.

Rodney Terrell Green, 22, was charged with four counts of accidents involving damage to an unattended vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property.

Mr. Davenport, who played off and on for the Steelers from 2006 to 2008 and is now running back for the Indianapolis Colts, told police that just before 1 p.m., he left the Impala running outside his house in the 200 block of East Meyers Street while he went inside to get something. When he returned, it was gone.

Witnesses Michael Bigos and Matthew Caudill told police they saw Mr. Green drive off in the car, according to his criminal complaint, and, along with Mr. Davenport, chased after him in other vehicles.

Mr. Green fled from East Meyers toward Amanda Street, where he struck a 1997 Buick, a 2002 Buick and a GMC, according to the complaint. He pushed the GMC into a fourth vehicle, totaling Mr. Davenport's car.

With noticeable facial injuries, Mr. Green got out of the Impala and ran toward the Foodland parking lot, police said. Mr. Davenport, looking on, called 911. He and the witnesses chased Mr. Green and stopped him in front of the shopping center, where they waited for Zone 3 officers to arrive.

Mr. Green was taken to South Side Hospital before being lodged in the Allegheny County Jail last night.

Leaving a car running unattended = stupid. If you have to "go back inside to get something," shut off the ignition and take the keys with you. :dang:

At home?

I do it every now and then, but then I live in a quiet neighborhood where I know everyone.

Where he at - in the hood?

I still wouldn't and don't do it, but that's just me. Just too inviting, IMO, regardless of location. Why tempt fate?

I wouldn't exactly call Carrick "the hood," but it is near some pretty bad areas. That part of Carrick is near Mt. Oliver and Knoxville, not exactly a couple of places I'd be itching to live.

He should have stolen LenWhale White's car instead. If LenWhale got close he could just throw a donut in the opposite direction.

I googled an image of that area...I would expect an NFL player to be able to afford something a little better!
