NEW YORK (AP) - The weapons possession case against former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has been adjourned until September.
The 31-year-old, 6-foot-5 Burress shot himself in the thigh with an unlicensed gun Nov. 29 while in a Manhattan nightclub. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison.
Burress has pleaded not guilty and is free on $100,000 bail.

Faces up to 3.5 yrs in prison, will maybe serve 6 months if convicted.
With 5½ months of that sentence suspended because, well, just because. And the other two weeks or so to be served as home confinement monitored via ankle bracelet. :coffee:

He will most likely play all 16 games this year, for cheap.
They were just talking about this on Mike&Mike - court date will be pushed back until 2010, after this season.
Goodell can try to suspend him but on a first offense and no conviction or plea bargain the players union will appeal any suspension.

It'll be funny when he finally does play for the Mean Machine. The rest of the team will be annoyed by his refusal to come to practice.

I can see the following teams making a push for him:
New York Jets- They don't have much for whoever their QB is going to be (probably Sanchez) and Burress would be a reliable target...plus he wouldn't have to buy a new house.
Dallas Cowboys- They released T.O. in the offseason leaving them with Roy Williams as their #1 receiver. Jason Whitten is their most reliable target in the passing game, but beyond him and Williams (who disappointed in his 10 games with Dallas last year), they have nothing.
Oakland Raiders- They have a QB that nobody but Al Davis is sure about. They just drafted a WR projected to go in the bottom 10 of the draft in the top 10, and then opposite him they have Javon Walker who is somewhere between a has been and never was. Burress would be a good fit in their shceme.
I see him getting a one year deal with a team option for a second year everywhere but Oakland (who would sign him to s 7-year deal because Crazy Al Davis runs the team).
This way, whichever team signs him doesn't have to worry about having him in the roster if he goes to jail for a significant amount of time. And if he doesn't and he played well, they can retain him for one more season.
And as for his lawyers comments that his gun wasn't used in the commission of a crime, he's wrong there. By carrying an unregistered handgun, not having a license to carry a concealed handgun, taking said handgun into an establishment that serves alcohol, and then discharging said handgun within city limits....he has committed FOUR crimes with the gun.
The fact that he only shot himself is moot, and he should consider him lucky. In a crowded club, it could have hit anyone (including another member of the Giants) and then he would possibly have manslaughter charges on him too.
