Ovechkin tops Malkin for MVP awards
Thursday, June 18, 2009
By Shelly Anderson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

LAS VEGAS -- The Penguins' Evgeni Malkin lost out to popular Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP at the league's awards show tonight at the Pearl Theater in the Palms Resort and Casino.

Ovechkin had 115 first-place votes and 1,264 points to Malkin's 12 first-place votes and 787 points. Detrtoit's Pavel Datsyuk was third with 404 points.

Ovechkin also beat out Malkin and Datsyuk for the Lester B. Pearson Award, given to the most outstanding player in a vote of fellow players.

Malkin was named the center on the NHL's first-team all-star team.

Malkin, who won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer with 113 points, joins right winger Jarome Iginla of Calgary, Ovechkin, defensemen Zdeno Chara of Boston and Mike Green of Washington, and goaltender Tim Thomas of Boston on the first team.

Penguins center Sidney Crosby was named the third-team center. He was a finalist for the Fan Fav Award, the first MVP-type regular-season honor decided by fan vote. That went to Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo. Crosby also was a finalist for the Mark Messier Leadership Award, which went to Iginla.

Real MVPs take their teams all the way through the playoffs and into the Stanley Cup Final and WIN it for them!

But we'll let him have that trophy while Geno has Lord Stanley's Cup to drink his champagne out of! :sofunny:

Unfortunately I heard from Ron Cook last night that the league only looks at the regular season for the Hart Trophy. I think it's complete bull and all of the awards should factor the postseason to.

Oh well, I'd much rather have the cup of Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley any day.

Give me a Stanley over an MVP anyday of the week.

Ovechkin deserved it this year but Malkin should have won it the year before when Crosby and Fleury were hurt most of the year and Geno lead the Pens to the #2 seed.....now that was BS not this time

It was bullshit last year that Malkin didn't win it, and it was bullshit this year that Malkin didn't win it. The media suckoff of Capt. Caveman is sickening. That's OK, because Cavey had to stand behind Geno and watch him accept the Art Ross Trophy while posing with the only two trophies that matter - the Conn Smythe and the Stanley Cup.

But you want to know what the BIGGEST bunch of bullshit was?

Penguins center Sidney Crosby was named the third-team center.

I mean seriously...W...T...F?????

I agree XT. It's a rip that Malkin doesn't have 2 MVPs. But hey, I'll take having the Conn Smythe Winner on the Pens anyday of the week as well the team holding possession of the Stanley Cup.

Crosby to should be at least and 2 team center. 3rd Team? ehh.

Ah I see the Ug's knob-slobbin' is running rampant throughout the league.

As others have already stated, Malkin is the proud owner of the two most coveted trophies of all - the Conn Smythe and The Stanley Cup.

P.S. :upyours: Ovechkin, you dirty SOB.

Playoffs dont count towards the Hart because the Playoffs give out there own MVP trophy, which Malkin did win. Which in my opinion is worth 100x more than the Hart, just on the fact that he lead his team when it mattered most.

And yea, i really dont care if OV racks up regular season MVPs, as long as the Pens keep racking up the Stanley Cups

I'm not surprised Ovy won the Hart, nor do I care. Regular season trophies are nice little pats on the back and all but none of those trophies takes the place of the glory of winning the Cup.

I watched the awards show - nice to see all the great players congratulating the Pens on winning the Cup. That was the best part to me.

why? there is an award for playoff MVP and Malkin won it.

Let the caveman have his regular season MVP.

Let the caveman have his regular season MVP.

He goes away usually in the playoffs. The Capitals won't make it out of round 2 unless they make some key signings in the offseason.

Eh. It should have been Ovechkin.

The MVP should only count the regular season.

The MVP should also be a awarded to the player that had the greatest impact on the regular season success of their team. The Capitals are Ovechkin. I love Geno, but the Penguins continue to be the Penguins without him. He is a very important piece of the puzzle, but he's a piece nonetheless.

The NHL is such a Crosby suck-up league eh, whiners?

No big deal. The closest Ovechdick is coming to the Stanley Cup is if he goes over Malkin's house someday.

Especially if The Capitals don't provide him some sidekicks.
