The Pittsburgh Steelers have awarded the city’s school district a $200,000 grant to install a new synthetic field at George K. Cupples Stadium, a 9,700-seat facility on the South Side that is the home game site for City League football teams.

Part of the National Football League’s Grassroots Program, the grant is sponsored by the Steelers, the NFL Youth Football Fund and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation/Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development.

The funding is allocated to Pittsburgh Public Schools as part of $2.5 million in field refurbishment awards granted this year nationwide.

The funding is expected to help the field to be resurfaced for the 2010 fall season.
