View Full Version : Am I a Fairweather Fan?

so, i am now faced with a huge decision in my life. it tears me up inside to even have to really talk about this, but to me, it's important. i want to get opinions on this topic. here it goes:

one of my all time favorite players Rasheed Wallace has now just signed a 2-year deal with my least favorite team, the Boston Celtics. what do i do? stick with the Detroit Pistons who i've always loved since the Dennis Rodman days. after Rodman retired, i rooted for the Portland Trailblazers when Wallace was with them and by the grace of God he was traded to the Pistons. so, fate brought my love back to the Pistons.

now, fate, the twisted little b*tch that it is, brings me back to the most hated and biggest a-hole team, the Celtics. *shudders to think*. i HATE the Celtics. i hate them like i hate the Browns. and that right there is a deep seeded hate that will never go away.

so, i ask you, does it make me a fairweather fan to turn my back on the Detroit Pistons who i've known and loved for so long to follow one of my all time favorite players (behind Rodman) to a team a utterly despise? yeah, i can root for Detroit and still follow Wallace's career in Boston...but it's like Ben Roethlisberger being traded to the Browns and having love for him and being head over heels for the Steelers. it's a crisis i've faced before when Rodman was traded to the Spurs, and then killed it with the Bulls...then went to the stupid Lakers. i've been down this road and i basically just stuck with the player...but i can't piss on the Pistons.

does this make me a fairweather fan?

You stick with your team. Period. Players come and go...even star players, gut the team will always be there.

Why can't you still root for the Pistons, whom you've followed and loved for many years, but yet still cheer on Rasheed Wallace, the player? The only time that support might conflict is when the Pistons play the Celtics and if it were me, my loyalty priority would have to go to the Pistons. One day, Wallace is going to retire and if you've loved the Pistons for all of these years - why stop because of one player?

I absolutely LOVED Jim Kelly who was the QB of the Buffalo Bills in the 90's. As long as the Steelers weren't playing the Bills, I cheered on his successes but my love and loyalty has always remained with the Steelers. When Kelly played against the Steelers D, I'd cheer if they sacked or intercepted him (but would silently pray that they wouldn't bend him in half - LOL!) :chuckle:

The larger question is, do you love a team, or the sport more?

I love the sport of hockey, so I root for the game and what is best for the game. That is why I am happy when certain things happen, even though I may not like the team.

However, in football, I am a STEELERS FAN. I follow the team, and could care less about many other teams. I would root for an old Steelers player ONLY if and when a win either 1 helps or 2 is neutral to the Steelers in the season.

i am a HUGE Steelers fan aswell, and i get what you are saying. i loved Joey Porter...but not enough to root for the Dolphins. na'mean?

i love the Pistons and i love Rasheed Wallace, but i loved him before he was a Piston. i followed the Pistons because of Dennis Rodman. no joke, i was in 3rd grade when i started to like Rodman. he retired and i followed players to emulated his style, hence, Rasheed Wallace. he was then moved to the Pistons and i loved them even more. but now he's gone and i neglected to mention that franchise is slowly going downhill and Rasheed is with a winning team now. a possible big time contender now that Garnett is back.

i'll always love the Pistons and they'll always have a spot in my heart, but there is nobody else on that team i loved more than Rasheed. no he's gone and i wonder if i follow him or stick with the Pistons regardless?

Pisnnapalm said it best, stick with the team...period.

that's where my heart is right now too. but i can't help but pick up a Rasheed Wallace Celtics jersey this fall. haha!

Were you a fan of the team BEFORE Wallace? Then it's team first.

If you became a fan because of him, I would say go with him. HOWEVER, he has gone to the one city I detest more than anything!

I am a life long Yankee fan so all things Bosux are evil. If Hines Ward were to ever (...ugh...I just threw up in my mouth a bit) go play for Belicheat, I think I would cry for weeks but I would NEVER switch teams.

But, this goes back to what I said before because I've been a Steelers fan for 30+ years, before and after Hines.

Stick with your team.Players come and go (and Sheed only has a couple good years left anyway), but teams are forever...

Root for the Pistons (who I hate, lol), and root for Wallace (who I also hate, haha) to have personal success as a player . Just because a player that you love plays for a team that you hate, it doesn't mean that you have to root for that team.

I think you can look in the mirror and answer the question for yourself.

And even that was arguable (Rasheed's mileage) to fans here in Detroit Rock City.

For me, the Steelers always take precedence. I wouldn't switch allegances because my favorite player left...as when Rod Woodson left.

But...I do believe you can pull for a player, but not a team.

I was thrilled for Rod Woodson when he got his ring, but it didn't change the fact that I couldn't stand the Ravens.

Same thing for Tony Dungy. Love the man, don't like the Colts.

Root for your team and also your guy Wallace. Im a huge fan of guys like Kevin Greene Jeremy Shockey Nick Mangold and Dan Morgan. Only 1 of em played for us. I cheer for them as players. My favorite baseball player was Jeff Bagwell. I even own a Astros jersey of his. Just cause you like a guy that dont play for your team dont make ya a fairweather fan.

I can relate - I absolutely love Albert Pujols (aka God). He is by far and away my favorite baseball player. But would that tempt me to root for the Cardinals? Hell no. As painful as it has been, the Pirates are my team, and they always will be.

I root for other players up until they play the Steelers. Then all bets are off. TEAM first, individual second!

Like others, I followed Woodson's career after he left the Steelers and was happy he won a ring - unfortunately with the ratbirds. I followed Hardy Nickerson, Kevin Greene, and a few other departed Steelers. But if the Steelers aren't doing well, I could care less about their day on the field.

Like others have said before me, I am a firm believer in sticking with your team, regaurdless of who plays for them...you never abandon your team, especially if the player goes to a rival team....he is now an enemy that must be destroyed, period
