LATROBE, Pa. – Even though the news about Darnell Stapleton’s knee was pretty good, the time he is expected to miss created something of a numbers crunch along the offensive line at this stage of training camp.

With that reality facing them, the Steelers signed veteran center Alex Stepanovich on Monday. To make room on the roster, the team waived defensive end Jordan Reffett. Stepanovich was due to practice with the Steelers for the first time on Monday afternoon and will wear #67.

Stepanovich, 6-foot-4, 296 pounds, came into the NFL after a career at Ohio State as a fourth-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2004. While it often takes rookie offensive lineman time to adjust to the NFL, Stepanovich was thrown right into the mix, and he started all 16 games of his rookie season.

From there, he saw less action with the Cardinals, primarily because of injuries. Stepanovich injured his hand in the Cardinals preseason scrimmage and missed the entire 2005 preseason and the first regular season game. Then he injured a shoulder on Nov. 20 and went on the injured reserve list on Dec. 6.

After his third season in Arizona, the Cardinals opted not to tender him and he became an unrestricted free agent. He signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2007 and appeared in 12 games with four starts there, and then he played in Atlanta in 2008. The Falcons released him on June 17, 2009.

With Stapleton sidelined and Justin Hartwig still recovering from a broken toe, the Steelers were down to 11 healthy offensive linemen and only two of those – first-year player Doug Legursky and rookie A.Q. Shipley – played center.

C Alex Stepanovich, will step in and play as a rookie.
Draft Note he scored 45 out of 50 on the Wonderlic, one of the highest scores ever in 2004.

Smart Centers are good. He must have some flaw? A little light?

Does this move Shipley to backup guard position.. whats up with legursky...

62 Hartwig, Justin C 6-4 312 11/21/78 8 Kansas
64 Legursky, Doug C 6-1 315 6/9/86 1 Marshall
61 Shipley, A.Q. C 6-0 298 5/22/86 R Penn State
67 Stepanovich, Alex C 6-4 296 9/25/81 6

Stepanovich graduated from Berea High School in Berea, Ohio.

It doesnt move anyone anywhere...Hartwig isnt practicing, Stapleton practiced in his place...now with Stapleton out at least a few weeks. Neither of the 2 centers have any NFL game experience, so they brought in someone who does. Because they do have a preseason game coming up soon, dunno if they'll start this guy but still. Unless something happens, I doubt he even makes the team.

Camp body until Hartwig returns. Legursky and Shipley are both ahead of the guy on the depth chart and on playing time. Jordan will be back in a few weeks Im sure.

They have need as many bodies as they can get...it has nothing to do with current reps and everything to do with having guys who can come in and spell the players and keep practice moving along.

NFL from the sidelines

After hobnobbing around the NFL in the press boxes and sidelines, sports reporter Dale Lolley will let you know the insider scoop.

Steelers add Stepanovich
The Steelers, thin at center due to two injuries, have signed former Arizona Cardinals center Alex Stepanovich.

Justin Hartwig has been bothered by a toe injury since training camp started July 31, and Darnell Stapleton is expected to be out for several weeks following left knee surgery. Stapleton, who began camp as the starting right guard, was the backup center last season.

The 6-foot-4, 296-pound Stepanovich was a fourth-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2004 and spent three seasons with them before playing for Cincinnati in 2007 and Atlanta in 2008. He has played in 46 NFL games, making 34 starts.

This could be a sign that the team got bad news on Stapleton, who was at training camp on Sunday during family day. Stapleton had his right knee heavily wrapped.

Of course it could also be that they just don't want to wear Doug Legursky and A.Q. Shipley, the only two healthy centers they have, out.

I would expect Hartwig to try to return to practice on a full-time basis soon - likely next Saturday when the team returns to Saint Vincent College from its preseason opener.
